Today, I’m going to share some of the not-so-common reasons why you might be struggling to lose weight fast.
Insulin is at the heart of a slow metabolism. Ultra-processed foods like chips and Cheez-Its have 0 sugars but contain carbs with very little fiber. They also contain starches-strings of sugars connected together.
Starches act like sugar in the body, but worse! They are higher on the glycemic index, so they cause a higher blood sugar spike than sugar. Seed oils can also cause problems with insulin, affecting weight loss. Stress and lack of sleep can also affect weight loss.
So, how do you fix an insulin problem?
•Reduce sugar and starch consumption
•Stop snacking
•Exercise
•Get more sleep
It takes 24-48 hours to get into ketosis. If you have a glass of wine one night and then just one piece of bread the next, you are not going to be in ketosis.
Sometimes, your eating plan is working, and you just don’t know it yet. If your hunger is gone and your energy levels are high, your diet is working; you just need to give it more time.
Overtraining, poor sleep quality, and certain medications can also interfere with weight loss.
The following natural solutions can help reduce insulin and boost weight loss:
•Berberine
•Apple cider vinegar (ACV)-1 tablespoon in a glass of water
•Vitamin D-10,000 IU or a half hour of sunlight daily
•Healthy Keto diet with intermittent fasting
Once you’ve adjusted to a 16-hour fasting and 8-hour eating window, try switching to an 18-hour fasting window with a 6-hour eating window. You can even work up to 23 hours of fasting with a 1-hour eating window to boost weight loss.
Dry fasting can also speed up weight loss. Don’t eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset for 12 hours of dry fasting.

Your household and mine are not the arbiters of how most people grew up. Also, at the ripe old age of 57, you can't sit here and tell me that there aren't more chemicals in US food or that the food industries are in bed with politicians, the AMA, the ADA and every other "A". This bad food is pushed on us (remember the campaign that HFCS was ok?) and then we are pushed into healthcare "treatment" which never cures anything but keeps us reaching for more and more medications.

my short story: my anxiety and stress levels got so bad, I seriously considered rehab. Nothing helped, inc meds, substances, etc. It lasted for almost 10 years. Then I tried int fasting (18+6), after 3 months my anxiety was GONE. Yes, I was hungry most of the time but at least I didn't have panic attacks every single day. I call it 'hunger enlightening' and I love the feeling. Now I'm about 2,5 yrs in been doing int fast but didn't lose weight until keto. I wasn't obese, but now I'm finally getting this athletic slim build I always wanted. And the serenity, ofc. That's the best part.

The worst prescription I heard of; A woman complained that a specific weight loss program didn't work and then let out that she was on an anti-depressant that caused weight gain. I told her that rather than blaming the program, she needed to blame the drug that causes weight gain and is defeating her efforts. I also told her that she needed to a different doctor. There is absolutely no logic in prescribing an anti-depressant that causes weight gain, to a patient that is depressed about not being able to lose weight. I am of the opinion that doing so; is medical malpractice.

@@danielastoica3354 Years ago, my doctor gave me an anti-depressant. I took one pill one time and that was the last time I took it. The way that drug made me feel was a hundred fold worse than dealing with the depression. It was later that I noticed that when I did not take vitamin D3, I had more days when I was down than when I taking vitamin D3 so I made it a regular supplement in my diet. The first step a doctor should always take when dealing with a patient that has depression is make sure the patient is not suffering from nutritional deficiencies like vitamin D which does cause depression in people, or some other physical malady that can cause depression. Seasonal depression is a real thing, and if a person has a vitamin D deficiency year round, the depression is likely to be year round.

I've always been very thirsty. Less so in the three years since I went carnivore, but I still have water next to me at all times and naturally drink around a gallon each day. The idea of water fasting is just awful to me. Back in 2015 my severe thirst helped me to stop a 28-year heavy smoking habit. I went to the ER with my appendix around midnight. The surgeon came in and said he was waiting until morning to take it out. Sometime in the night it burst (I suspect while I was still in the ER) and by the time they opened me up I had gangrene and they had to take out a fourth of my colon. Because of the resection of my colon I couldn't have anything at all by mouth for days. Not even water. I was SO miserably thirsty that I forgot all about smoking. I didn't think about food either. My need for water was all consuming. I had tried to quit smoking multiple times and never made it past the fourth days. Well, it was six days before I was allowed water. It wasn't until I could drink again that I remembered to miss smoking. But realizing I had made it over that four-day hump I decided when I got home I was going to try and not smoke. I think it was important that I framed it that way to myself. I wasn't "quitting", I was just trying not to smoke. Even with that head start it was still very hard, and there were tears, but I did it. It also helped that I decided to quit coffee too, since in my head the two were so linked. If I had a smoke I needed coffee and vice versa. Anyway, yeah, I think I'll have to start small with the water fasting. Maybe one hour a day and then increase it an hour every week and see how it goes.

Another big thing is not drinking enough water when you're water fasting. I did a 3 day fast that wasn't working as well as it usually does.. So later I did another and made sure to drink a full gallon of water each day and I was losing 3 lbs per day... for 6 days straight. It helps burn fat and it helps to flush the kidneys, which are filtering your sugar from the blood (at least the first couple days).. and it helps you poop well, since you're not eating, etc.. It's so beneficial to really take on a lot of water. and you can alternate that with dry fasting; which also has great benefits

@@mindydiaz9015 I'm almost 6ft and have fairly stocky muscles.. You probably won't get over your 2 lbs per day, just because of your size and muscle mass, etc. But 2 lbs per day still adds up quickly. Don't be afraid to fast for a whole week. You feel great doing it. Some people like dry fasting, but I hat3 it. I'd much rather load up on water and drink a LOT, than to do without.

I would love to add something :) Having a dysregulated nervous system i crease cortisol and insuline and also stops you from losing weight especially around the mid section. You can release access cortisol and regulate the nervous system with somatic excercises

@@Smashingblouse You can go onto The Workout Witch KZbin page and there are lots of videos. Signs can range from not feeling like yourself, chronic pain, the way you sleep, like sleeping with T-Rex arms up under your chin. Eye twitching, hair loss, weight gain around stomach, moon face, feeling stuck in fight or flight/freeze mode. It's amazing the more you learn about it. So many of what I thought were my habits because my system was dysregulated for so long turned out to be symptoms 🤣🫠 For example lots of people that get diagnosed with ADHD actually just have a dysregulated nervous system it's just that can be healed through these simple excercises, so the medical field doesn't talk about it. I had a motorcycle accident/concussion which damaged my vagus nerve and that's what through mine off but it was years of my own research. The regular Doctors never mentioned anything.

@@MHLivestreams Excess cortisol can go either way. It can make it hard to lose the weight or hard to keep it on. I'm like yourself where I weight trained all my life but once my cortisol went into overdrive my muscle mass started going away and making it hard to keep on. The weight gain is due to the access insulin from the cortisol

If you are doing low carb, constipation can be an ongoing issue. Make sure you are drinking enough water, and you may also want to look into a fiber supplement. Occasional use of magnesium citrate may also be indicated. I am doing low carb plus omad plus the 5:2 plan, but more as 4:3, and constipation is an ongoing issue for me as well, but this is a problem I must solve. Dr. Berg actually has a brilliant video on this channel about how constipation can stall weight loss.

You know what's sad. Sometimes, there's a vitamin or mineral deficiency that causes folks to feel too exhausted to even do daily tasks. I should know, I used to have a daily routine of getting things done and still having energy to exercise. But little by little, my body started having a harder time getting things going, I was mad at myself like WTH! Is wrong with me! I wanted to get things done like before, but my body felt like it was aging so fast. A simple trip to the grocery store had me dragging arse. I would barely unload groceries and put them away before I had to literally fall to the ground from the exhaustion and try to take a nap. Sometimes my brain felt foggy. Other times, I couldn't remember basic words or slurred my words a bit.. It was making me depressed. So I went to the Dr with my complaint and they did labs, and i had low vitamin D. You know what the Dr said? "Oh it's not that low, just go outside and get some sun and exercise? Like seriously, I had to remind her "I'm not able to carry a simple task and you're telling me to just go outside and exercise?" Why didn't I think of that, you stupi*biatch, I thought to myself. She really did piss me the hell off. Then she said she would put me on high dose Vit D, so I did that for like 12 weeks. Did lab work again and only went up by 5 points. The Dr was like "did you take your weekly doses" I said, "of course, like clock work" So I was put on more Vitamin D.. year later, I was finally in the normal range, and doing all the things I had stopped doing, my mind even got sharper. If you're on Medi-cal because you're low income, don't let the Drs treat you like you don't matter.

I'm sitting in the hospital writing this after surgery to remove my gallbladder. On Tuesday night, my gallbladder became inflamed (cholecystitis) due to gallstones (cholelithiasis) that blocked the ducts, leading to severe pain and infection. It was the most pain I've ever experienced in my life (and I've passed two kidney stones before). Dr. Berg, I’ve enjoyed your content, and the keto diet has helped me lose 25 pounds and counting this year. However, I now have concerns about my diet moving forward. The gallbladder’s primary function is to store bile produced by the liver and release it into the small intestine to aid in fat digestion. Living without a gallbladder means that bile will flow directly from my liver into my small intestine. The doctor here recommends a low-fat, bland diet, which means less meat (especially fatty meat) and no spicy foods-two of my favorites. I’m interested in your feedback on what I experienced and how to best move forward with my diet. Thank you.

@advex4428 not really dry fasting doesn't mean you don't eat. Muslims dry fast for 30 days each year. They don't drink or eat when the sun comes out until when the sun sets. They break their fast with water and a date. You won't die when you dry fast.

I have a fasting insulin of 4.4 uIU/ml. So i am very insulin sensitive. I still struggle with weight gain if i am not careful. With great power (insulin sensitivity) comes great responsibility. You will store fat easier as well if you overeat. It's a double-edged sword.

@Tes7000 3 күн бұрын
I am sure I haven't seen a fasting insulin like that in decades. My fasting insulin is usually about 33, more than seven times yours. Yes, you do put on fat easier from overeating, but you also burn it easier. I would take that over having to fight for every pound. I am a pretty big guy -- 6 ft tall, husky build, and over 300 lbs, yet my maintenance and weight loss calories are not proportionally higher than a normal-size man.

Dr Eric Berg Your recommendation to dry fasting is actual what we muslims do in the whole month of Ramadan. It is from the sunrise to sunset. Our Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to fast (so called dry fasting) every Mondays and Thursdays. My personal experience: I have been following 16:8 pattern and infact it really help me loosing weight BUT the affect of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays i.e 2 days fasting (so called dry fast) weekly has really significant result in fat buring than 16:8 pattern. Thank you so much for all the information you shared to us and educate us.

Dear Dr Berg, I like the details you have researched and relay in your videos but I do feel some people only take away part of the detail and when I read their comments they seem to have misunderstood the whole message. A prime example is the importance of quality and restorative sleep, a much underestimated process, yet so many are suggesting they will forgo a daytime-dry-fast and simply not drink prior to sleep because duration of non-drinking is the same, it's not the same thing. Perhaps underlining the points that you correctly stated here with a look at some of the recent studies published in the past ten year (I've been reading them over the past month) on The Glymphatic System and our natural brain-washing nocturnal maintenance cycle. The key word in this video was "occasional" 24 hour dry-fast. Thank you for your studies and videos. 👍

Question: What’s a good strategy to lose belly fat without losing or gaining muscle mass at the same time? Following several videos: To lose weight: I’m 34, was 77.4kg, good shape but want to lose belly fat. For 2 weeks, no alcohol only water, and very little sugar and carbs. Lost 1.5kg in 2 weeks. Problem: I’m losing overall weight fast (the scale says and friends), but belly is too slow to go down and also, even though I eat once a day (2-3pm) lots of protein and vegetables and water only I feel I’m getting smaller in muscle mass. Also I have about 90gr/day of whey protein (I know it has sugar), but it did helped a lot to gain muscle mass in last 4 months. Am I actually on the right path? I thought I’d lose weight slowly as I also gained muscle mass, but I don’t want to go very skinny. Videos are the best out there btw

I haven’t slept a night for anymore than 4 hours of solid sleep in over 30 years, and I am not tired during the day, I read somewhere that some people can have a gene where they don’t require much sleep, not sure if it’s true or not. But very frustrating just laying there, and sometimes I just want to sleep! And end up taking sleeping meds unfortunately.

You've got to be pretty motivated to go without water. Thirst is a very strong demand.

Drink if you are thirsty of course. You may want to watch this video again as well as his earlier videos on dry fasting or on how to fast correctly.

Sort of...But the REAL culprit is SEED OILS. Canola oil (which was called Rapeseed oil before they whitewashed the name), Soybean oil, Cottonseed oil, Safflower oil, Sunflower oil, and even most "olive oil" (because nearly all oils labeled olive oil now are cut with soybean oil, or rapeseed oil, or similar) are the main reason for fat gain. Combine those with excess carbohydrate and you have a recipe for weight gain. Eliminate ALL seed oils and only use butter, tallow, lard, and occasionally a fruit oil (coconut, palm, or REAL olive oil) and just watch how much easier it is to cut fat and maintain a healthy weight. It may take several months though, because those seed oils persist in the body for months or years.

Vitamin B6 is important to support a healthy body. Typically, there are no side effects of taking vitamin B6 if you take less than 200 mg daily. If you take too much vitamin B6, you could experience toxicity effects. However, you would have to consume over 1000 mg of vitamin B6 per day to cause any issues. I Fast 18 to 22 hours a day. I believe in drinking water in between to move waste in the body. Not just pooph old waste in the body. It's summer ☀️ time right now! People can go without food for days BUT you need water to also keep the body cool and to keep from dehydration. Also try to do more fruits and vegetables and less meats while losing weight. Exercise even if it's just walking. The body needs water because your body loses fluids it's summer time.
