With static environments, it one moving object, low draw distance, no complex animations, and no AI. Maybe another 25-30 years. Ray Traced Reflections, Shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and Diffused Illumination should become a standard in about 4-5 years on PC. Consoles should take another few years on top of that. By that time, 10th gen consoles will be released, so in top of Ray tracing, we'll get massively improved geometry, textures, and animations, even than today's very best. When it comes to actually making something lifelike, looks aren't everything. You'd also need very complex physics simulations, though we already have things like Nvidia PhysX, and Unreal Engine's Chaos Physics. So by 10th gen, we should have lifelike visuals, while by 11th gen we'll get much better physics. All of that will take at least 15 years. We've gotten pretty great at making fake things feel like good representations of characters, as seen in RDR2, on top of it's vast world. So I hope by then, most games will have at least that level of AI. Throw in a few years on top of that and you should have something similar running just on computers, Virtual Reality is a whole another story. You'd need to run all that at 120fps, very high resolution, so at least 4k displays for each eye, and with body tracking. All of these things should be achieved by that time, but the visuals will still need to be improved, so maybe another 5-7 years. If you include haptic feedback, it basically becomes impossible to predict. We might get some thing like super advanced VRChat in about 15 years, but it'll still be far from the Matrix, and humans might just go extinct by that time, so it's hard to tell.

Hi zelexi, an honour to have you follow my channel :) I've been thinking about spatiotemporal reprojection for a while now, but we haven't got time to implement it yet. It should do wonders. KZbin also makes the Monte Carlo noise more jarring and splotchy, but today I've tweaked some settings which drastically reduce the noise, so I will probably release a new video soon.

Very impressive light/shadow. Even at low resolution and fps it still looks more realistic than most games today. Games have high enough poly count and high enough resolution and so forth but those things only go so far, games need path/ray tracing to take them to the next level.
@okaybutwhythough74564 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, now we have games with great lighting, mediocore texture quality, and bad polycounts that run like crap as well. Realistically, we should improve the polycounts and geometry first, while improving the lighting to a good level, which we saw in the UE5 demo earlier this year. Full path traced games won't become common until maybe 5 or 6 into the future.

what is interesting to note aside from path tracing, is the size of the objects and clipping....that is a tiny car amongst huge buildings....nice....it is that typical teapot in a stadium analogy.

The bi-directional version of pathtracing will converge faster than the pure gathering version. Greatest speedups happen in indoor scenes with strange lighting. "Strange" means sun coming through a window, or spotlight lamps.
@Reavenk12 жыл бұрын
With the image convergence, it's really fast, but for something like an immersible experience, expectations are very all-or-nothing - and it needs to converge a little more before it's there. But I've been follow your blog, and this is soOoOo close now. When you get it converging as much as it should in realtime, I would be excited to see it as a full blown game (rules, tracks, AI opponents, cinematic cameras, menus and HUDs).

Atomontage is a voxel engine... the "blocky stuff" is just them changing the size of the voxels... in a game you would have tiny voxels and it would look incredibly realistic.

to mtlnascarfan the vido quilty shits because path tracing reuquires a lot of processing power which we don't have now. therefor wh can't get enough "sample" use in rendering. As the GPU gets stronger, the vidro quilty will get better.

i honestly dont know if that comment is supportive or the opposite lol
@mazdane61075 жыл бұрын
He’s wrong anyways, the blocky-ness is because KZbin can’t handle the noise from the engine. It’s like that for every video that has a lot of small things on screen.
@el_teodoro5 жыл бұрын
@@mazdane6107 ... that's not it. What you're talking about is bitrate and what you see in the video is the noise from Path tracing, after a while it has enough sample to eliminate the noise, our eyes do that in some ways to in the dark.

@Bellerophon220012 жыл бұрын
VERY VERY VERY COOL!!!! How did you acquire the source file by the way? Was it done with post textured photogrammetry? Is a point cloud, such as that created by photosynth or by laser scanners, easier to integrate into a ray tracing environment? I suppose entire engines would also have to be adapted to point cloud, as each point would have to be 'meshed' anyway to create things like collision mesh, bone movement and fabric effects.
@RogerJL12 жыл бұрын
I would guess that current video encoding encode methods does not like this much... - result is probably better when viewed on screen. What would the result be of running a median filter over each frame before compressing? Or reducing the rendering image size further...

Give it two years and PCs could run it at 40+ fps. I am uncertain this can exist with next gen tech as that date is coming close to a deadline if they are launching in 2013/2014. I believe if anything consoles will get OpenRL support and some mixed Ray tracing + standard API Brigade is all OTOY though and its damn good at what it does. In 10 years we could be playing this in our homes on OTOY cloud service. I know my connection couldn't stand up to pushing that much bandwidth around as of now.

You can't fake colour bleeding and soft shadows. Or fakes will be looking ugly and obvious. The video quality isn't enough but I barely see that car's yellow bleeds onto the road. Also sun is brightening buildings very realistic. I'm sure they have a lot of things to add there. P.S. I'm also a graphical designer. Games and visualizations.

Consoles won't get anything fancy. Right now consoles main audience is casual gamers who think that COD is the most hardcore and graphically advanced game ever made And the hardware in current and next gen consoles reflects that perfectly. Hoping on consoles to advance gaming technology besides ripping off old gimmicks is like hoping for the schöndingers cat to come and trash your party and get drunk on your couch. It just ain't gonna happen.

As a game graphical designer, I don't really see anything mindblowing in this demo. I understand how impressive it is to get tracing tech to work this fast in real time, but at the moment the overall performance and quality leave lots of space for improvement. Style-wise I also see nothing too special that couldn't be done with current "raster" methods. You could fairly easily fake most of the effects. The polygonal 3D objects with their textures etc still depend on the skills of the artists.
