As an independent that shares viewpoints on both sides of the isle; I have to give it to Charles Cooke for responding in a manner that was both respectful and measured. I wish more people of his level of intelligence were serving on the Conservative side of the legislative process. The dude ain't wrong here; most policy doesn't coalesce until the force behind it has cemented itself in a position of power.

PassDaMethod thats the difference ... you can have civil discourse and go away feeling smarter by understanding the other side a little bit more. Even if you still disagree... show me one fox news show where this exists. And Bill Maher is accused of being a radical. No fox news show has that many counter weights and treats their views with respect and open ears like he does. It's a difference in outlook overall.
@PassDaMethod

***** I agree wholeheartedly with your point; I believe that rational public discourse is the best catalyst for decisions that support the ultimate common good. Disagreeing with someone is not a bad thing; in fact, it's historically been the best way to lay everything out on the table and come to some sort of compromise and understanding. I am disappointed that these days people would rather fight over ideological differences than try and work together to overcome them. It seems this age is one of fruitless opposition instead of constructive dialogue. I'm holding out in the hopes that this changes in the near future.

***** I agree, Fox News and their ilk are generally toxic and close minded, but I would also state that so are the main-stream "liberal" news outlets; Huffington Post and MSNBC for example. They are just two sides of the same coin; touting their ideologies without any regard for actual facts. Horseshoe theory seems to be a reality these days at least in the mainstream media; both the right and left are willfully ignorant to reality and instead choose to peddle the narratives that serve their cause regardless of if the stories they are spinning are legitimate. I am a fan of Bill's comedy and have been faithful to all of his shows over the years because of it, but I can't help see certain biased viewpoints he holds, and glaring blind-spots he commands because it fits his image and serves his career. I think this is the case with all public punditry; human beings sadly are usually willing to overlook their own factual inadequacies in order to service their own personal success. I'd rather just lay it all out on the table and work it out like adults, no matter how uncomfortable that may be.

PassDaMethod Civility is overrated. Disruption, debate, argument and disagreement are the only way change, progress and evolution can occur. If everyone were to agree, we may as well do away with politics. Drop consensus, and adopt the dialectic.

Matthew Singh-Dosanjh "Civility is overrated." Only if you're not intelligent and mature enough to disagree with someone while still keeping an open dialogue. "Disruption, debate, argument and disagreement are the only way change, progress and evolution can occur. " You're agreeing with me while kneecapping practicality and realistic expectations. Nobody listens to anyone who is a raving, angry, inconsiderate lunatic. " If everyone were to agree, we may as well do away with politics." Once again, you're in agreement with my core sentiments yet you're undermining your own message by being obtuse. "Drop consensus, and adopt the dialectic." This is nonsensical and frankly sounds like you're just using buzzwords to make yourself sound educated on the topic. Dialectic breeds consensus by definition. I think you're a bit out of your league here.

I just wanted to mention-- if any employee sworn to properly handle classified material was found with Top Secret material on an unclass server, the office would be shut down and all security clearances would be suspended, pending a full investigation of unauthorized disclosure. At minimum. If it was found that classified information was mishandled and/or transmitted on unclass channels, usually everyone involved would have their clearances revoked, and they'd never again be allowed tm handle classified material for life. Jail time is a possibility. When they were dismissing Hillary's "email scandal" as Zippergate 2.0, Charles Cooke was the only person on the show who said anything accurate-- anyone else in the intelligence business would have been hung out to dry by now. Ed Snowden would agree (except his case was in the name of a moral cause, not negligence).

Families shouldn't have to give elderly a purpose to live. what about elderly people without families? If we had jobs programs we could employ people to go to retirement homes and pick retired people's brains about their careers and facilitate skill transfer to the young from the old. we could also make travelling to places like schools, colleges etc where they can talk about their experiences. You could also create special jobs programs for the elderly that wouldn't count as income for social security purposes. these jobs would be designed around the elderly's skill set or just what the elderly wanted to do/learn. What more of a purpose do elderly need than teaching a younger generation and being provided the resources to learn what they want to learn?

Charles Cook seemed like a more well thought out conservative. I am not a fan of much of what he said but I do think if the right is ever going to become sane again, they may need to start with him as an example. Steve Schmidt and Lawrence Wilkerson are other decent examples.
@LRF49
@LRF49 9 жыл бұрын
+joshua franco How about the left becoming sane? What has the left done that is sane in your view? The left wants to raise the minimum wage to $15, yet ignore the people who make $18 before minimum wage. Those peoples wages will be less valuable. The left is doing all this to benefit a minority of people while the majority of people have to suffer and pay the price via cost of living increases and less valuable wages that are just above $15. Also, Charles Cooke pointed out, Obamacare deductibles are expensive and most can't even pay for it if an emergency arises, yet the left celebrates this and pats itself on the back for essentially championing a healthcare system that was invented by the 'insane' republican party. It thought the left is not suppose to support anything the 'insane' right does?

I need to get this off my chest because it irks me every time I encounter it: women and minorities, if you really want for us to not see gender or race in an election, quit saying "I'm a woman and/or minority," when asked what the difference between you and your opponent is. It frames the election in a way that says "if you don't vote for me, you're a racist and/or mysogynist," which is a completely false dichotomy. You actually raise my defenses against you when you do this, because it seems like you're trying to guilt me into voting for you instead of giving an actual reason for me to.

What BS from the National Review guy...deflect to "Obama had no plan when he took office...." That is the equivalent of saying no one should have any specific legislation on taxes because the 1st leader to implement an income tax had no specific legislation on it when he took office. Or excusing those who want to expand national parks and environmental regs for public lands legislation from having any specifics today because Teddy Roosevelt had no specifics on national park or environmental legislation when he took office. You don't need to tell us any specifics on what those changes to social security you are running on are--after all, FDR had no specifics on what he'd do to create social security when he was first elected! Bullshit. Now there are very detailed systems in place. You know damn well what changes you would make. You know you would lose votes if anyone knew what they were as well. So hide them, Don't even propose them any more. Just vaguely point in their direction. Then mislead each group you speak to into thinking YOUR changes are THEIR changes! Anyone ever noticed that Bill Maher is technically mistaken when he calls himself an atheist? He's actually an agnostic, cuz his big thing (including Religulous) is saying he doesn't know if God exists. An atheist is one who denies the existence of a deity or of divine beings. An agnostic is one who believes it impossible to know anything about God or about the creation of the universe and refrains from commitment to any religious doctrine. I would be an agnostic myself, but I don't agree that it's impossible to know anything about God, cuz that would be presuming to know something.
@ActionGamerAaron
@ActionGamerAaron 9 жыл бұрын
ytubeanon Gnosticism is a state of knowledge. Theism is the belief in a deity. Maher is an 'agnostic atheist' just as most atheists are. He has stated openly that he cannot prove it, but he actively believes there are zero gods. Atheists don't believe god claims, but they also cannot prove a negative so they are also unknowing if that's absolutely true. The difference between what a person knows or believes in indistinguishable from a 3rd part however, so it's a moot point. Thus that is why atheists call themselves on such. "Agnostics" are also agnostic atheists that don't want to piss off the extra religious that have been brainwashed into believing 'atheism is a poison'. Rightfully so, it is a "poison" to the church's tithing...

Jeremy Scott Hahahaha .. Why don't you tell us what Plan the GOP has ever had to replace the ACA . after their 50 plus attempts to repeal it at a waste of millions of tax payer dollars .. LOSERS ... You can't because there are none .. nice try tho . Jed Lewison catches House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) delivering a line today he probably wishes he could take back. " This to us is something that we’re not going to give up on, because we’re not going to give up on destroying the health care system for the American people.” ---- Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) Reps ARE IDIOTS .. so are the idiots who keep defending them and voting for them .

Even the worst of the worst on the SCOTUS had a no confidence vote on the GOP coming up with any healthcare plan at all .. that's why they didn't over turn the ACA .. that was a bridge too far for even the Right wing justices.

Bill Maher could not have been more courteous to conservative Charles Cooke. He [Maher] did our side proud. Although Cooke displays decent intelligence, I could see myself in almost complete disagreement with his views. It certainly makes a change from the usual bought and paid for/ low intelligence conservatives we usually get to see. Having said that, I'm not sure if Cooke's mannerisms and calm behaviour make him slightly more sinister. To put it more clearly, you know where you stand with Trump, Cheney, Bush, Palin et al.

chestypants78 It's his accent. He was wrong about the democrats being in control during most of Bush's reign. Bush enjoyed GOP controlled house and senate January 2005 to January 2007 for 2 years. You're not accustom to some right wing idiots with pleasant sounding accents. But I've listened to the mental cases like Lord Monckton with his posh Westminster accent. What comes out of their mouth is polished turds. But turds none the less.

@dreamcoyote

hawhite2000 it doesn't work that way though.. SS+medicare doesn't cover all the costs of nursing homes. it will cover the majority of it only for a couple of months and then they start cutting the benefits down. now.. after you've burned through all your savings, 401k, sold the house, etc then they will provide more but.. saying they are leveraged to care for those in nursing homes suggests it covers there them there when it doesn't. it's not nothing but it's not a fully functional system either. the best thing you can do? divest yourself of all assets and savings >5 years before you need to go into a home. the fact that you have to "cheat" (although those are still legal things to do) to make it work out means it's not a very good design/implementation.
@jmitterii2
@jmitterii2 9 жыл бұрын
dreamcoyote What usually happens in our state if the person or family can't pay, is that they become wards of the state. All social security benefits and most assets are liquidated to the state. The state takes the tab usually via special provisions paid for by both the state, but mostly by the federal government assistance appropriations. But most people are wise, if they can't pay for nursing homes, assets are changed from being under ownership of the parent who needs nursing home care, to a relative ownership; this prevents the forced liquidation of assets. And such things have to happen quickly. If the person has mental problems such as dementia or alzheimer's its the first thing you want to have done while they can still sign over titles to homes and vehicles, and not be in condition where the state can challenge the parent's ability to make such decisions. Essentially, you want to have this done before the person becomes ward of the state. Otherwise the state makes all choices for the parent.

To belabor the obvious, when laws are fair and blind to bias the color of people is of no consequence. Given this reality of equitable laws applied across the board to everyone fairly and accurately should not the electorate match the demographic of the elected as to race, with a hope of eliminating same?

Get government out of the health care insurance business as much as possible. Limit them to limited regulations and financial support for health insurance to those who need it. Obamacare, Medicaid, Medicare and VA hospitals should be phased out. People under these programs and those who are financially below the poverty level should be given a yearly amount that they could use to purchase health insurance. Keep the federal regulation stating that insurance companies have to cover pre-existing conditions as long as the person had previous insurance. Allow people to purchase insurance from any state. Deregulate state health insurance markets. Unhinge medical insurance from employers in the tax code. Getting government out and increasing competition in this way will lower health care insurance costs. It cuts the bureaucracy costs, cuts the fraud costs and improves competition and quality of care.

@dreamcoyote

TKList insurance companies were already bolting through the loopholes on coverage for pre-existing conditions. they would just drop you and you would have to pay COBRA until you found another policy. few people can afford COBRA and the new policy just triples your rates due to the pre-existing conditions (which they will treat but you cant afford the insurance anyway). the insurance system worked to a degree until insurance companies were allowed to leverage more money on the stock market. they became greedy at that point because by keeping *your* money in the stock market rather than paying out for your medical needs, they made much higher profits. there were subtle rule changes for insurance investment in the late 1990's that fubar'd the system. that's when you saw insurance companies create their death panels and start holding off on approving procedures until people died. interstate competition would be good but.. the whole corporate system is tainted at this point and deregulating them won't fix it. there are definitely issues with state regs. in the end I don't think your solutions would wind up with a better system than the ACA has. it would be different, but still would have insanely high rates, tons of bureaucracy (who has worked in a company and not seen tons of bureaucracy? that's a myth!), and lots of people would still fail to get health care.
