I am so confused. Let’s give a fully functional, perfect FSD to Elon Musk. I don’t know even with that, this robotaxi thing would be successful. Why are people assuming that it will be the biggest thing ever? There are buses, trains, taxis, Uber, Lyft, etc. For riders, there is no difference between taking a regular taxi or Waymo and taking a Tesla robotaxi. Thinking robotaxi will be cheaper than buses and trains is ridiculous. If it is cheaper than a bus/train fare, how is a robotaxi Tesla owner going to make 30,000 dollars or whatever number Elon came up with, especially if everyone buys a Tesla for that? It is outrageously inefficient. At best, it would be a glorified Uber/Lyft. And, lastly, Americans love consuming and owning things. People are not going to suddenly ride robotaxi instead of driving their own cars.
@davidbrayshaw3529
@davidbrayshaw3529 4 ай бұрын
I'm with you. Why are people assuming that robo taxi will be the biggest thing ever? The service that the robo taxi has the potential to provide already exists, and it has since the days of the horse drawn cart. Who cares if it is a "driverless" taxi? Rideshare drivers aren't exactly the highest paid labour on the planet. Trying to replace them with technology is going to have such a minimal impact on costs, you've got to wonder why. And then there is the human interaction to consider. Rideshare drivers are able to help people with their luggage, they're able to have a conversation and they are able to police behaviour, to an extent, at least. And you make a very good point regarding people "owning things". We like our autonomy, and cars give that to us. At the end of the day, you take your car 99% of the time, you don't hail a cab, book a rideshare or catch public transport. Car "culture" isn't just about hot cars, it's about how we use our cars. Cars are a lot more than just transport. Robo Taxi won't change that.

Sadly, several motorcyclists have been killed by Teslas on assisted driving, probably because they lack a true distance-measuring capability, so you’re justified in staying away from them. I do the same when I ride my bicycle and I notice a Tesla approaching via my side mirrors. I’ve seen several demonstration clips where the vehicle suddenly veers towards an unsuspecting bicyclist it’s approaching and the driver has to grab the wheel and steer away. @2LegHumanist
@2LegHumanist 4 ай бұрын
@chow-chihuang4903 That's all true, but we also rely heavily on our general knowledge of the world, how it works and we can build world models in our heads to predict what will happen. And even more significant is our ability to extrapolate. Humans don't have to be explicitly trained forvevery narrowly defined situation we can find ourselves in on the road. We can solve edge cases on the fly. Machine learning models can't do that. They have to be trained in advance and there is no amount of data Tesla could gather and process that will cover all of the edge cases. Tesla could run 1 billion cars for 10k years and they'd still barely be scratching the surface.

There is absolutly no way a robo taxi can be cheaper than a bus. When you ride the bus you are giving up time (hours per day) in exchange for a very cheep ride. A robo taxi would somehow have to save riders time AND money.

When I am on a bus, I just pull out my laptop and do work. So no, I am not giving up time to save money. And yes there is no way a robo-taxi can be as cheap as bus ($2 per ride in major US cities) - even charging much more, most robo-taxi operations are losing money big time.

A bus can carry 30-60 people at a time thus relieving congestion on the roads. the answer is not two person cars and more of them the answer is more busses and bus routes. And make them publicly owned companies so you're not beholden to ever increasing fares because of shareholder greed, The service simply needs to continue to exist for it's users. The clue is in the name "Public transport".

Musk's vision about vision and AI for FSD is fundamentally correct. Where he has a literal blindspot is that Tesla vehicles put the cameras on the exterior of the vehicle that can get dirty/occluded. When I point this out to Musk fans they claim it's an easy problem to solve. So if it's easy how come Tesla hasn't solved it? You can't convince me that they haven't considered the issue. For vision to work it has to work in the same way as human vision works. i.e. cameras have to be mounted *inside* the cabin where human eyes are, protected from the elements. Then it is analogous to a human on the inside looking out. Only the forward facing cameras are inside the cabin and have a way to clean them if they get dirty. All the other cameras have to be mounted inside. This would be expensive, which is why Tesla hasn't done it. In addition to dirt, the cameras also need a sunshade. As humans we use the visor or a hand to block out harsh sun that blinds us. Tesla cameras often get blinded by the sun and FSD will indicate its degraded or turn off altogether due to a camera being blinded by the sun. This too can be solved. It just hasn't been done and there is no indication from Tesla they acknowledge the problem and/or are working on it. Until the FSD software is truly capable of level 5 autonomy, Tesla won't develop sensors that are self-cleaning or have a sunshade. despite what Musk said about the Model 3 having the hardware to support full autonomy. Its clear Tesla know that's not the case but won't waste time on the sensors until the system is fully functional.
@springer-qb4dv
@springer-qb4dv 4 ай бұрын
The problem is much more than just camera which is inadequate monocular vision. FSD computer is basically on the same level of intelligence as a slug. FSD computer does not have generalized strong intelligence of human brain which can make sense of everything around them and form a coherent world view. What's more there is extremely serious problem of FSD computer hallucination which can cause catastrophic failures. This is the reason why most other companies with real working robo-taxis employ lidars (and radars) to validate vision. Until Tesla has lidars, it will never be operational robo-taxi no matter what Musk/fanboys claim. So no, Musk is totally wrong and heading towards a dead end. Musk has dug a massive hole for himself having built millions of guaranteed "robo-taxi" ready Tesla cars, and there is no way out.
@JeanPierreWhite
@JeanPierreWhite 4 ай бұрын
@@springer-qb4dv Lidar is just like superman eyes. It does nothing for deciding what to do in a certain situation. Say you could see so much better than you can now. Would it make you a better drive. Marginally maybe, but not worth writing home about. Another way to think about it is that a teenager may have excellent eyesight, but is a poor driver until they get experience. Vision does NOT make you a good driver. Lidar is simply good are perceiving reality. Nothing more. FSD drives poorly because it's like a teenager. It does not have the experience to make smart decisions. That will come with time. Probably a lot of time. You maybe right in order for FSD to drive very well it will need much better on board computing capability. The idea Mus has floated that Model 3's have the hardware they need for full autonomy is speculative at best.

So the genius idea is to build a customised two seater RoboTaxi. Don't the economics of building vehicles come in part with volume? Niche vehicles sold in low volume tend to be expensive. This seems to be one person's assumption based on some Tesla presentation promotion put together to convince Tesla shareholders that Musk reward should be higher than Tesla's entire profits to date, so needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, although it is the sort of idea that would come from Musk. Seriously, FSD-Supervised is going to be released as a RoboTaxi without a steering wheel? That is like believing StarShip 5 will be landing on the moon. Anyone that argues that taxis are more efficient and less expensive than busses needs to point to the source data they are basing that on. Busses and Trains are the most efficient mass transport systems, taxis good for short individual routes. If the Las Vegas loop swapped out their non-autonomous fleet of Teslas for electric busses that could fit through the tunnel, they would probably improve the volume and reduce the operating cost. I am so looking forward to see the Tesla RoboTaxi presentation in October/November/December, the smoke and mirrors and heavy use of CGI is going to be fun to watch.

And some cities provide all mass transit fare-free because they consider it a public service like public roads and sidewalks instead of a profit center, and it reduces traffic congestion. They basically save themselves and their riders the cost and hassle of a fare collection system. I used the heck out of the complimentary shuttle bus service at my college. The only issue was limited hours on weekends.

Here's the thing. Auto drive does not have the track record to warrant removal of controls. Things like drive-by wire, automatic transmissions, elevators. They all have a damn near flawless track record. The percentage of failure is so remote that you can pretty much trust them. Auto drive doesn't even have close to that. It's in its infancy. Elon doesn't seem to understand this, engineering is hard, technology is easier. It's been proven. In fact technology gets better the more you do it. I'm not ignoring what Elon and his vision has done for the electric vehicle. But dude get some perspective.

We all run into optical illusions in the road surface ... there's no AI that can make a decision based solely on stereoscopic vision. That was really just ignorance of the capability of his own products not to include lidar.

Teslas have at least 8 cameras - not just “2 eyes” The CEO of NVIDIA just said AI video learning is legit and is self-driving with recent versions having near-zero interventions. The vehicles will have plenty of cargo space to carry luggage. LiDAR is not cost effective compared to AI learning. I appreciate your perspective and “truth telling.” I don’t care about Musk, but I do appreciate cost efficiency and cost effectiveness. I’m sick of changing out gasoline transmissions, oil changes, spark plugs, engine coolant, etc. Steve Jobs was also eccentric and personally flawed. He was also told by engineers “it’s impossible.” I don’t have to be a fan boy or cult follower, or a climate activist to notice effective innovation. It’s just logic and mega trends. If you can demonstrate something is multiple times safer than a human being, then it will eventually disrupt. If it can not be demonstrated, then it will remain as simply a bunch of sleek EVs that are the best selling car in the world. All the giant OEMs are attempting to produce profitable EV vehicles. Some will eventually become profitable. Most will fail and have to double down on ICE manufacturing because they realize they are too far behind Tesla to ever compete in the EV sector. Maybe I’m blind.Maybe you are blind? Time will tell
