Let's find a way to factor in all of the 'unforeseeable' range factors! Veloway ride starts at 7:00
www.ebikeaholic.org/ebike-ran...
I created some new eBike range calculators that can hopefully pull it all together and give a more realistic range estimate - but I need your help to fine to it! Please check it out and leave some feedback in the comments!
In this video we'll walk through the new two step calculator then go for a lap around the ATX Veloway loop during the 500 watt range test.
The battery range estimator starts by giving you an expected watt hours per mile (Wh/mi) which you then plug into a calculator and get your expected electric bike range. Wh/mi is a measurement of how much electricity you consume while riding your e-bike.
I can't believe it took me this long to get down to the Veloway - it's amazing! Imagine if your daily commute could feel like this!?

I can't believe it. After buying my e-bike going on six months ago I finally found something resembling an answer to the question I've been asking the so called experts to help me figure out. What I'd been trying to figure out was just how far my e-bike would get me given the parameters I'd be riding under. All I was getting was generic answers like, "It depends on many factors." I know this is basically true but I suspected that someone somewhere had to have come up with a way to figure this out. I just stumbled onto this video and damn if it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I'm happy to report that the estimated OEM range specs on my particular e-bike fell right in line with the final estimated answer I got from filling out your online form. I know it's not an exact science but it's the closest thing I've come across yet for estimating this kind of range for my e-bike. I was disappointed at first cause the parameters you've listed for the various questions did not match my particular e-bike. What I mean is that for Amp Hours you didn't list the 16 AH that my battery is rated at. There was a couple of other questions that I really wasn't sure what answer I should select but all in all it spit out a number that closely resembled my e-bike's factory specs. Even with help of this calculator it's still real confusing for me because I've ridden my bike on ten to twelve mile trips using basically the same parameters I listed in the calculator questions; starting with a fully charged battery and I only drained my battery by one bar. (my battery status window displays four bars on a full charge) In my mathematically challenged pea-brain this tells me that I should be able to get forty or so miles out of a fully charged battery. (I mean, in a perfect world.) My battery is a 48v 16ah battery. I plan on buying a spare battery that is rated at 48v 13ah in a couple of weeks just to extend my range a bit farther. With this in mind I filled out a separate form on your calculator but here too the choice in answers did not include 13ah. Perhaps you could incorporate a scroll down type of icon so as to allow one to select the exact amp hour rating a given bike is set at. At any rate, the calculation I got on this new form also seem to align closely to the factory specs for this lower amp hour battery as well. Good job sir.

Glad it was helpful. It doesn't work for everyone, and it is true... keep in mind that every ride will be different, but we have to keep trying! Ultimately as the controller technology continues to improve the display will be able to tell us what's what just like a Tesla does.

Hello! I’m building an ebike and I have a battery and controller that doesn’t fit into the battery case. Do you think it would be wise to remove the box of the controller and wrap the circuit board with like foam or something so it can fit or will there be problems in the future? I was thinking I could make it fit by just taking whats inside the controller and wrapping it with foam or something. Please let me know if it’s smart to do that before I do it !

I have a electric bike that's running on a 48V 21ah extended range battery. My question is if I'm riding at gear 2 or 3 with the PAS level of 2, with the exception of the 750W motor. My question is mainly on the motor magnets. The magnets tend to buzz while the motor reads the 48V 21ah battery. Would that mean that I've increased speed if my km is at 40, but tend to go at least 16mph in which the bikes motor is reading at a different speed per hour. ( The 48V 21ah Extended range battery goes from 50km to 90km miles ).

Theoretically, I simply can't calculate the consumption for myself... mostly when driving straight ahead, my motor draws around 300-350 watts, but as soon as there is a small incline, I'm already at 1300...2 minutes driving up a hill uses as much electricity as Drive straight ahead for 20 minutes or so.

yeah that's a great point, hills and terrain can drain the battery real quick. To the same point though, most rides will be round trip. What goes up must come down. Coasting down a hill might not require any energy at all. The hard part is overcoming range anxiety when you're starting on a decline knowing that you'll need to climb back up toward the end of the ride.

The google form isn't necessarily a calculator - I guess it's more like a quiz that gives a points tally. The calculators below the form are from uCalc.

The Ford F-150 Lightning Barely Made It 80 Miles With a Trailer it’s rang normally was about 250 miles without a loaded trailer : Its the same way with ebikes they say it gets 80 miles to a charge, but when you put a fat guy on the ebike it drops the range down to 75% for example my ebike has two batteries two motors and they say 80 miles range,but I am 200 lbs not 120 Chinese lbs so I get about 25 to 30 lbs so now you understand what a battery will give you based on your load or fat ass 😅😂🤣😝.

Ha! 36V. 7,8amps. 250w motor. speed no more off 15mph. windy day on an ocean shore. sandy route. 11.25 miles range. (2,5 hours, maybe) and i'm not sure that was a final mile. So I didn't find an answer on youtube. What is really works? So fare it looks like - if you looking for a pleasure ride... or speed!? That was mine question. I have a Diido D2s. And I bought extra battery pack, guessing it will extend a time and range.

While nice, your bike has horrible efficiency... I would regularly ride my front hub hard tail specialized at around 30~32 mph(pedaling with the bike otherwise top speed was 28) while carrying lots of stuff in a bike bag in the rear rack, my bike with me probably weighed close to 290~300 pounds and I was still doing ~25 watts per mile. I assumed mid-drives were supposed to be more efficient, but I guess that's not the case.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Yeah you're right, the setup in this video is inefficient but it's not because it's a mid drive. The main reason is because the battery pack capacity is too low and it has high discharge cells. Another reason is because the bike has a high gear ratio and the controller is set to give continuous power even when ghost pedaling. The results are also not very accurate because I wasn't using a watt meter at the time.

I should also note that the 12Ah pack (Samsung 30Q cells) from this video failed prematurely. Luna determined it to be a BMS issue and gave me half off on a new pack which didn't fare too much better. I'm also not the only one who has had an issue with this pack so I won't be using 30Q cells again any time soon. Samsung 50E or 40T seems to be the way to go for the time being.

You are using only PAS 1 of 9 and your speed were above 20 most of the time with low efficiency score of 35 wh/mile. Most factory ebikes can barely maintain 100% above 20 mph and at the speeds they need to be at the highest PAS level. Also their efficiency scores are between 20-25 wh/mile at the highest PAS level. Most factory ebikes with mid drives can achieve 10-15 wh/mile at lowest PAS. Your algorithm is more suitable for DIY people with double the power of factory ebikes. If you look at the range calculator of Bosch you can even attain as low as 5 wh/mile.

Yeah you're probably right. I also have this Ultra programmed to give full power even when ghost pedaling which makes it less efficient.

Hey so I tried to fill out the calculator on your website but the options did not pertain to my bikes setup. Can you help tell me what too expect for range ? Bike and me both way 300lbs total , bike is 72 volts , battery Is 62 ah , motor is 5,000 watts , mostly ride flat ground mainly in woods/trails . I avg 20 miles per hour , and when on pavement 30 to 40 mph , very little wind 5 to 10mph , and no pedal assist it's all throttle, Thanks and let me know ASAP please and thank you Bike is a super73 RX Mojave and I plan on buying the lithium ion 62 AH battery for an additional $3,000 😊

Yeah this has all kinds of problems. Gearing ratio doesn't matter if you are using a hub motor. Motor size does not inherently effect motor efficiency. You can have a 5000 watt motor, but if you only use 500 watts, then you're only using 500 watts. Factoring in Max speed is redundant if you already factored average speed. Stop and go traffic uses more power then your form suggests. Aerodynamics is a MUCH bigger effect on power usage then your form suggests.
@eBikeaholic
@eBikeaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I haven't edited the form in a while but will take a closer look at your suggestions. Gearing ratio does matter if you're using pedal assist, regardless of motor type, but yeah it has more of an impact on mid drives. I think the max speed points help factor in weather or not the rider is using high power... if they're able to hit over 40 mph on flat than they're probably running over 1500w with a high gain ratio and lowering efficiency. You're probably right about traffic types and aerodynamics - I'll take a closer look at those too. I'm assuming your efficiency results from the form were way off?
@caseyb1346
@caseyb1346 3 жыл бұрын
@@eBikeaholic yeah, I forgot the results now but they were half of what they should have been, because they put too much of a penalty on my motor (1500 watt) and not enough consideration for the average speed (20 mph). 20 mph on a 1500 watt motor uses as much electricity as 20 mph on a 500 watt motor, all other things being held constant.
