I personally find the practice of changing a character's race to be lazy. If Disney wants to promote more representation, they should take inspiration from "The Princess and the Frog." It's an amazing movie with catchy songs and a mostly Black cast. To me, that's a more appropriate way to handle representation. Instead, it feels like they just change a character's skin color and say, "Here you go, here's your representation." Regarding Rachel's description of how their version of the story would portray Snow White as the leader she knows she can be, I found it completely off-putting. It's not that I dislike strong, independent women; rather, I'm just tired of how Disney and Marvel handle their female characters.

I find it to be out and out problematic. When you race-swap characters, you're basically telling a demographic you don't care enough about them to actually make a character or a story for them. You're just giving them someone else's hand-me-downs. If they really cared about these demographics, they'd actually create characters that were steeped in those cultures like what they did with Moana, or find a myth from one of those cultures like Mulan. Nevermind the fact it's also out-and-out cultural appropriation: how's taking a German fairy tale and replacing Snow White with a Latina any different than if I made a live action movie about Queen Calafia starring Kirsten Dunst?

I always took the point of the dwarves in the story to be that they were outcast from society for being different, and probably seen as useless. So the fact that they're thriving and happy on their own was uplifting. And it was natural that they'd help someone in need, who in turn helps them. And they're the ones who avenge and rescue their friend at the end, as the queen runs through the dark woods being grabbed by branches in a direct mirror of what Snow had to go through earlier as a result of the queen. It's not complicated storytelling, but it's at least solid and understandable and has real meaning, especially to kids. And now we can't have that because one guy has a chip on his shoulder about being a dwarf, even though he's handsome and rich and successful.

As for me, the main problem here is that the filmmakers have been constantly lying (or misleading the public, to say the least) about this so-called brand new, revolutionary take on the Snow White tale for years, while in reality it's not. Such movies as 'SW. A Tale of Terror,' 'Mirror, Mirror,' and 'SW and the Huntsman' had already changed our perception of Snow White. They'd already given the princess enough strength and proactiveness to challenge the queen and retake her right to the throne. Since the 90s, this trope has become classic. Kristen Stewart has already done that, Lily Collins has already done that, and Monica Keena has already done that. And now we have a bunch of ridiculous interviews with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot behaving absolutely delusional and talking about how they will challenge the tradition, break the rules, etc., while in fact Snow White has been a feminist for the past 30 years. I am sure this remake will entertain me, and I am definitely going to the cinema if I am not killed before March 2025, because I love the tale, but dear filmmakers, please, STOP PRETENDING THAT THIS IS SOMETHING NEW; IT'S NOT. The answer is to write more complex roles for little people, or just consider them for some roles if its do-able. Many romance or fantasy stories can have serious characters played by little people. Mufasa will fail too given the fact that it will compete with and be overshadowed by Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Also, those CGI dwarves look like they belong in the Shrek franchise or The Polar Express. From a visual perspective, the CGI Dwarves is what are being rejected the most, they're very unrealistic and not in a good way, more like uncanny valley nightmare fuel. As if often said, actual dwarven actors could have played those roles and much easier/lesser cost then CGI. To explain, in order to reshoot those scenes, Zegler would be performing in a empty room surrounded by green spheres on sticks and then the animation would have to be overlaid on top of that in post production. Mulan, Moana, Tiana, Raya, I think Disney did very well in cultural diversity without the issue being forced. For me personally, the Mulan live action is what caused me disinterest, the adaption was not what I expected, removing the charm of the original. And after that, I decided not to watch anything Disney produced that was a live action retelling of an existing animated movie. I am intrigued that the live action versions of the milestone movies are the ones failing the most, Snow White started Disney on the road to success and Little Mermaid saved the company from bankruptcy.

If i was pitching a Snow White movie, I would have everything up to Snow meeting the dwarves be the same, but have the dwarves be outcasts from society, and have them be distrustful when they first meet Snow White because "normal people" have hurt them before. As they get to know her, they learn not all people are bad, and it's Snow who helps them reconnect with the nearby village, she who helps the townsfolk realize that the dwarves are also just people who deserve respect and community. That's what makes her "fair". The queen learns that Snow is alive through stories spreading from that village and back to her kingdom (which she confirms via magic mirror) and she decides to take matters into her own hands. The poison apple scene happens and Snow dies, the dwarves catch her in the act and chase her to town, where the villagers are told what happened by the dwarves. The town and dwarves work together to find the queen and her fate is /heavily/ implied, and instead of setting up the glass casket in the woods, it's given a place of honor in the town center, where the prince eventually comes across her and yadda yadda. It's essentially the same story but with some extra depth that isn't a war story. Because people can be strong in many ways, and it doesnt always have to be about "power". Strength can live in kindness.

This new live action Disney’s Snow White film will be one of Disney’s biggest failures. Although The Hunger Games prequel is the only successful film Rachel Zegler has, Rachel Zegler truly is the queen of box office flops. The original animated Disney’s Snow White is definitely a magnificent classic. Truth be told, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman is a lot better and more epic than this unnecessary remake. Like I said, Snow White and the Huntsman was at that time following in the same vein as The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Game of Thrones. Ironically, Snow White and the Huntsman was released in the same year as the first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey and Game of Thrones season 2.

The worst part about the dwarves in particular is that they were the heroes in the original. They are who took Snow White in, helped her, fed her, and ultimately fought the witch to defend her. Disney could have focused on that angle, making them more prominent and heroic figures. As for the involvement of little people, personally I think Dinklage may just be trying to stay as the one usable little person in hollywood, but also you simply dont NEED to cast little folk as dwarves. Look at LotR and The Hobbit movies and how they were able to make both dwarves and hobvits look small while casting normal sized actors

Her job was to promote this film, and she cocked that up by getting as political as possible. Discussing the political views of Zegler are 100% on-topic when discussing this film, because she used the fame and audience she got from the film to push her political views. As for "racism", if they don't want to be challenged on the race of a lead actress, then don't market their casting choices on racial diversity and don't culturally appropriate German culture to do it.

Will this movie make Disney believe that they have to start appealing more to conservative audiences again? I don't know - I suppose it's possible. Wouldn't bet on it, though. I feel sorry for Zegler that she has to bear the brunt of these conservative attacks. And is her Latina skin color really that much of an issue? No white person is actually SNOW white. She is of European extraction like any other Caucasian. I don't see much of a problem. I mean, I guess they could change the character's name to Sun Tan... Also, what abour Rose Red? Her younger sister from the original Grimm's fairy tale. Is she named for her red cheeks, red hair, red lips... red skin? It's just a fairy tale. Don't sweat it so much.

I believe Rachel said what she said to hype up the new movie, and she's a progressive person. Okay, that's fine. The problem is how she went about it because as a result of what she said, she ended up talking smack about Walt Disney's creation and legacy, thus putting a sour taste in people's mouths. That and apparently she complained on set about wearing a dress? I'm guessing she must have been having a bad day and just needed to vent. I don't believe she complained on any other film set. I don't believe Rachel is a bad person at all. I just think she has fruatrations she needs to let out, but is doing so at the wrong time and had no PR training at the time she talked about the original. The reason i defend her so much is because she reminds me of myself. I was in a postion similar to hers in high school. Mistakes I made cost me my reputation, and I looked like a bad person. Fortunately, once I went to college, I could start with a clean slate and meet new people who did not judge me. Thank goodness for that. Here are my thoughts on Rachel Zegler. The whole controversy surrounding her is stupid all she was doing was expressing her own opinion about the movie yet people treat it it's the worst thing ever said. Sure I'll admit that you could argue that she wasn't media trained properly but at the same time she was also mimicking Robert Downey Jr's style which was being snarky during interviews. RDJ is always is always praised for yet when Rachel Zegler tries to do something similar it's seen as condescending. That's a double standard right there. If you're going to say Rachel Zegler's a narcissist then it's only fair for me to argue that RDJ is a narcissist. Also it's sad that everyone focused on her Snow White comments when didn't say anything immoral like "George Floyd and Breonna Taylor deserved what happened to them, Holocaust doesn't exist, all school shootings are hoax funded by the government etc." She never any of those things yet I know a bunch of people who have said those things and tons of other bad things yet they are not deplatformed. I'm not even trying to say that the movie will be good or bad. I personally am tired of remakes. I'm simply saying to everyone "GROW THE FUCK UP" all this controversy is bullshit. And I'm talking about empty theaters and no one waiting in line resulting in the movie being pulled early due to lack of ticket sales. It happened with the Jem And The Holograms movie. Sure, the studios might be able to shrug off a $5 million movie. They can't, and won't, shrug off $209 million.

12:46 I think you’re right. The point is equality, not topping the scale the other way. People lose sight and push their own narrative… that’s how we get here to Snow White
@stargazer4142Ай бұрын
Snow white in the original was so kind and sweet, so willing to help people. Zegler's portayal is just monotone, negative, low effort. That's atleast how I feel about her version of the character, from clips I have seen.

12:12 , thank you! 😂 Idk how to explain it but now I would love to see a princess saved or taken care of by a prince. It’s fantasy, please let women have a break and not have to be the strong independent person all the time 😂 I’m sure the kids see that in reality.

Race swapping is a bad idea, doesn't enhance a movie and can be very unhistorical. You want Black actors? Do a Black movie, do a movie in other eras or places. Otherwise they stand out like a sore thumb.
@heartlesslove90842 ай бұрын
For real race swapping is so pathetic that ruined cinemas. As a brown girl I don't want anyone to represent my skin color because of political correctness. I saw animated snow white as white girl my vision will remain white girl in movies too.

I concur,l’m so tired of reboots,prequels and sequels,l remember a time when 🐭would bring out a fresh new 2D animated project annually,there are plenty of folktales,original stories to draw from,but mainstream Hollywood would rather take the safe route with known IPs 🤔

Wrong about Star Trek. That's the narrative that Gene Roddenberry put out. The real reason was that the studio didn't like that he'd snuck his girlfriend into the cast and was openly cheating on his wife. When he forced her in as Chapel later they were also ticked off but decided to not fight it.
@SkynertiaАй бұрын
The movie completely disregards the fact that millions of young boys watched Snow White too and saw themselves in the Prince. Telling them that falling in love and trying to save the one you love from death is corny and unnecessary and that a story of women's empowerment without you and Snow's drive for revolution is what people need to see is never going to sell. Falling in love isn't the weakness Rachel makes it out to be. It's a strength that it seems like many in the western world have learned to forget.

What Disney and what a lot of these movie studios do these days with all these reboots and remakes is an attempt to re-write history because they view a lot of these classic movies and stories from the past as offensive that go against the current progressive ideology and therefore must be corrected. With Disney and the Snow White remake in particular, I'm not sure if calling it cultural vandalism is a bit too extreme but boy... It feels like it sometimes!

They’re missing the point that the Evil Queen was missing the point. It was ALWAYS Snow white’s personality, and values that made people love her. The Evil Queen didn’t care about being a good person, she just wanted to be loved without having to reciprocate any of it.

Disney himself didn't like the idea of sequels or remakes, I think I heard. In all honesty, there's so many different versions of Snow White that it's just a 'meh, another Snow White' movie to me. That and I'm not impressed with Rachel Ziegler. I didn't care much for her performance in Hunger Games

I was waiting for your video when this trailer was release this week (much to my surprise). As I stated before, they should have cast someone else as Snow White as I believe Rachel Zegler is miscast (not due to her race, I simply don't believe in her acting). If wanted to go and see this film, I would be going because I want to see Gal Gadot because she looks and acts way better than Rachel in this film.

the thing that irritates me, is that they want to "correct" a movie that doesn't really need correcting, because as they "correct" a movie, they are taking away the charm that made the movie so beloved in the first place. this is something that Disney needs to rediscover, I think they can, but they need a reality check to set them back on the right path.

Is it bad that I want to see how bad this flops? Outside of Rachel Zegler (overhated btw), we have Gal Gadot's involvement with the war and reduction of dwarves to CGI. One way or another, Disney is NOT WINNING with this movie.
