I’d like to make an apology for a mistake I made here on RMS. With the first segment with the ‘burping’ carby in the 1949 or 1950 ford, I mentioned the original flathead (valve-in-block) bent eight Ford used back then. Where I screwed up was seeing the Edelbrock valve covers on what was obviously not a flathead. Despite reading ‘Edelbrock’, my mind went to Ardun (an OHV conversion of the flathead Ford V-8) and my mind thought what I didn’t say. My bad, I guess I needed more coffee... bwob (Bob Hall)

Was just coming here to say that looks more like a 302/351 or something along those lines, but good on you for acknowledging that, honestly and owning up to a mistake are about as common as carburetors these days. Also someone please tell steph if she can figure out the electronic system of an Audi, carburetors are a cake walk in comparison. It's literally the same as tuning an ecm but your brain is the computer and your hands do the adjusting, it takes a lot more brain power and fine tuning but all you need is a flat head, 5/8" wrench, vacuum gauge and afr gauge if you want to get fancy, yeah it takes more maintenance but there's no crank, nock, maf or tps sensor and as long as you drain the bowls or don't let it sit for more than couple weeks they run forever

Yeah I'd say the fuel line popped off right next to the distributor at the fuel rail. Calling a 302 a flathead is also pretty funny he probably wasn't thinking straight when he said that. Fun fact if your carb ignites and you get a fire at the port floor or throttle blades, the best thing to do is to keep cranking it wide open throttle, there won't be enough vacuum at WOT to draw fuel through the circuits to actually start the car, or draw in a dangerous amount of fuel and the suction from the engine will snuff out the flame. The safest place for a fire is inside the combustion chamber. The bel-air and Malibu crash was a complete sham, not that a bel-air won't disintegrate and kill you, but to make that "test" marketable they removed the engine and transmission from the bel-air to significantly lighten the front end, because otherwise the malibu driver would have ended up with a V8 on his lap. That comet crash was totally avoidable those guys are idiots. They knew the throttle liked to stick at 1800-2200 RPM, they knew to keep the car under control they needed to ride the brakes. Knowing all this they took it out on to public streets. The brakes didn't fail, they faded, because to control the car they had to ride the brakes. These guys aren't just idiots, they should have been criminally charged. They're no different than the idiots doing takeovers.

@@OLI-vx1md yea I watched the same thing a while ago so I might not have it 100%. I didn’t think the brakes were faulty, just that he upgraded everything except the brakes. He planned on doing them but hadn’t gotten them done at that point. The brakes weren’t the cause, it was the engine, the brakes failed because the engine was running too high on the rpm’s. Whatever it was, if you’re riding the brakes to keep it under control because the RPM’s are too high, probably shouldn’t have taken it out in public traffic. Sucks for all involved. I think it was for a magazine or hot rod video or something & he was showing it to them.

I love these two together. So entertaining. I just bought a 2002 Ford Falcon AU UTE. (I'm in Australia. I don't think the American market sells utes like we have here). So my teenage daughter jumps in the passenger seat for our first trip and see's the window winder; "You open the window with that!". It's so good having a car that doesn't beep and whistle warnings at you. It has a cigarette lighter and an ashtray. It's super easy to work on and because so many were sold here as fleet vehicles and taxis, parts are super cheap. Had to replace the steering wrack ($250) and the front, left quarter panel ($80 and found it in the matching colour). Toyota Camry Wagons from this period were great as well. The four cylinder version was indestructible. My mechanic friend calls them "white goods on wheels" because they just keep going like a refrigerator.

that 59 Chevy/modern malibu clip is kind of a setup. You can see the massive cloud of rust that comes out of the 59. Plus those are X frame cars, which had a "chassis" that was basically a giant torque tube down the centre with a lot of structure coming from the body, meaning zero outrigger/chassis/structure is where it got hit. Super unfair comparison. The weakest old car being hit in exactly the weakest spot in exactly the most unfair way possible. Compare that to a Chrysler Airflow for example, which had a ladder frame and a space frame/boxtube chassis inside the body as well. For a promotion they threw it off a 40 foot cliff and drove it away. Window still worked, doors still worked. I know a guy in New York who dailies a '66 Pontiac Catilina, fullsize behemoth. Last we talked, 7 other cars have hit it and been a writeoff, and the catilina did not care at all. it's also been hit and not totaled the other car, such as when a guy in an Altima side swiped him at low speed, hooking the doors on the Pontiac's bumper, ripping both door skins off. Scrape on the Catilina just polished off. That crash test is super unfair, old cars really were built like tanks. Usually. You'll die if you get hit, but the car won't notice.

3:09 I'm from Gen-X, who were probably the last ones who got book smart on carburetors. We learned about both carbs _and_ fuel injection in high school Auto Shop, and my car back then was TBI-- so it had a foot in each world. 9:17 Same effect applies to the vacuum brake booster. Get the throttle stuck wide open and you try stomping the brakes to stop-- and all of a sudden the pedal is much harder to press down. All the vacuum needed to operate the bellows in the brake booster is going down the cylinder instead. Of course, the job of a brake booster is to make pressing the pedal _easier._ You still have brakes in this scenario, you just have to press down _really_ hard.

Regarding the 59' Belair accident... The main problem was the absence of a collapsible steering columns. You were often killed by the steering in a big crash. For some brand of cars, when that was not the steering columns, it was the transmission or even engine entering the habitable. At the time of the first year of the NHTSA (1959), the Chevrolet was believed to be the safest car on the street. (Also Mercedes and Volvo, but they were not American). In 1966, over 200 "Mandatory Change" has been introduced : Steering Columns, Firewall, Brake, safety belt and more.
@NEEDbacon3 ай бұрын
Also that '59 Belair crash was complete horseshit. 1. the '59 didn't have an engine in it, at all. And yes a large hunk of Iron could easily go both ways for the crash, but Newtons 3rd law is a bitch. 2. The Bel Air was on an "X-platform" which was a sort of Precursor to Unibody constructions. Not at all like the Body on Frame that was common. 3. End of the day the '59 had years of corrosion and such weakening what little of the frame was there. No doubt they weren't crashing a museum piece in pristine condition and even then metal Fatigue even without rust.
@derbydriver3 ай бұрын
@@NEEDbaconWrong. The car is on display at NHTSA HQ. There are KZbin videos showing it up close. You can see the engine inside. Not that it would make a difference anyway - the engine and trans are hand in by 3 bolts, they break away and move with the body. They do not provide structural strength, as we see here. You can also see that the car was not rust or compromised. That “rust cloud” during the crash? Yes, dust settled in to places that can’t be cleaned without disassembly. Not rocket science. The 59 Bel Air was considered a safe car back then. They are comparing it to a modern car to show how far safety has some. It doesn’t matter that it was an X frame, that’s beside the point. A ladder frame car would still not survive as well as a unibody, there are more than enough videos and photos of new car vs classic car crashes on the internet to prove this. Motor MythBusters ran a 65 Caddy head on into a 2005 Caddy and the results were similar.

I’m an engineer that worked in the auto industry. Cars are built WAY better nowadays. People think about old cars, but when you had an accident back then the cars would be intact and everyone dead inside. Nowadays, the cars disintegrate but everyone walks away. Also, the amount of miles we put on today’s cars and the efficiency they can achieve with relatively 0 maintenance… it is amazing. And all of this tech advancement ls for almost the same amount of money given inflation. If you are still not convinced, go get a relatively “reliable” car the VW Beetle from the 1960s and see how long it goes without you needing to adjust valves, clean carburetor, etc. I have one. Trust me. lol.
@BigUriel3 ай бұрын
If people thought about it for more than two seconds they'd remember how common it was for engines to get rebuilt every few years, nowadays if a car doesn't get scrapped with its original unopened block it's considered unreliable, many manufacturers don't even provide rebuild kits any more.

Yep. You can see the plume of reddish rust dust in the video. The original video had it's comments disabled the last time I checked. Before that, most of the comments were calling them out. Didn't the '59 also use an X frame? So having it rotted out would make it even worse. To be clear, I am not saying the older car is more safe, as it is not. But this was a very obviously rigged for failure experiment to make it look like the old cars just get smashed to nothing in an impact where in reality it is often the opposite (which isn't great either.)

@@sangun123 I never said cars aren’t safer now, I’m fact I said they were in my comment, but the fact that it was set up for failure and model chosen specifically with a shoddy frame design used isn’t something that should be overlooked. A lot of older cars are more rigid and would show less damage, not a good thing as crumple zones absorb impact, but it is still true.
