I agree with the sentiment completely... ...but don't you see? The whole point is he's *not* a "great man"--he's an effective public servant: he's diligent and disciplined. We've become so accustomed to celebrity politicians and useless demagogues that seeing an elected official simply doing his job amazes us. "Great Men" are often not good administrators...and they may not even be good human beings: They're just very forceful personalities with impressive achievements... But those are better qualifications for an Emperor or a conqueror, not an elected functionary of a democratic republic.

This portion of anarchists are really more a very tribalist subculture who look and act similar and consider a few cities their meccas, like Portland. Bill is right. It's easy to rage both online and outside but the real change has to go through government at some point. The grassroots stuff helps a lot IF done right and with popular support but presenting yourself and group as a caricature of a mischievous angry mob that wants to smash and spray paint everything and repeat extreme slogans DOES NOT HELP AT ALL. I believe they help Republicans and the right and hurt the broader left (those left of Republicans altogether). Not that they are the only group helping Republicans more than the left as a whole, there are also anachronistic and edgy authoritarian Leninists, which seem to be much more common online than in person, and the relentlessly anti-Democratic Party weirdo left led by people like Jimmy Dore (everything is the Democrats fault and Democrats hold magic powers to bring about a utopia but refuse to use it, also, don't actually be productive to fight for change, instead sit online all day and attack Democrats on Twitter and KZbin).

Smart comedians, like smart everyday people, say things that make sense, are generally truthful, and might have the intent to try and make society better. As a low level civil servant myself, I really appreciate this. It’s nice to have someone recognize the work of the countless analysts and project managers who keep the country running and chart its path forward. The one thing I do disagree with is his disparaging of theory. Political philosophy is the North Star when it comes to policy formulation. It answers the first question that should always be asked when crafting policy: what kind of a world am I trying to build? Theory is your guiding star, policy is your map of how to get to get there.

Maher isn't opposed to theory. He's opposed to people who think firing off tweets and spray painting on public buildings is enough to get stuff done. Which is a very naive and lazy approach. Personally I think looking in as a European and actually knowing how America was founded namely on war with the natives and theft from the natives and slavery nothing much has changed except for the names of the two most prominent tribes. Question So Where did the Trail of Tears begin Answer as the very first greedy white foot stepped on land and end? Answer it hasn't ended. Probably never will remember greed is good and above all the government must protect the dollar no matter what at no matter what cost well so they say. Europe is just better at sharing but still has faults as well just not so pronounced.

Excellent point. Even Political Scientists get too caught up in studying "Political Parties" and "Presidential Politics" and the like. This is one reason why one of my favorite books is by Robert Lipsky "Street Level Bureaucrats: Dilemmas of the Individuals in Public Services" because it makes the point that legislation is important (and Waxman, clearly, is a diamond in the Congressional rough), but people implementing the statutes actually "make" policy. It shouldn't surprise us though. We always talk about CEOs and not assembly line workers in our economy either.

So a sincere "Thank You"to Henry Waxman. He certainly deserved the "Baldy." The GOP ALSO has it's policy wonks working tirelessly to subvert and game the system who spend endless nights over a cold cup of coffee, chortling in glee like Mr. Burns. What is vital is "Good Faith." The GOP lost that with Nixon and doubled-down ever since.
@tl83192 жыл бұрын
Would you call these things good faith? Passing a 10,000 page bill at 1:45 am with only two hours to read it? Signing an executive order and admitting at the time you know it's illegal and will be struck down by the court. Obtaining warrants from a secret federal court based on information you yourself fabricated. Killing an American citizen by drone with no legal proceedings. Those are just a few things done by the left recently.

There's some psychology behind this called _The Halo Effect._ -It's about the video game- It's about how we all tend to assume that beautiful people are better, stronger, faster, etc, than an unattractive peer, which would be conversely governed by something known as _The Horn Effect._ There's no point in me including any links, since a simple google search for either of the above terms (in italics) will give you all the information you could want on the topic.
