I'm a liberal Democrat and two years ago I moved from one of those hip, cool, cultural cities to a small, rural farming town in the mountains of western North Carolina. I absolutely love it. I don't miss the traffic, crowds, inflated prices and oh so cool hipsters. I've found my like-minded peeps, retired hippies, just regular down to earth folks, and artisans and craftspeople. I don't miss the bright lights, hip city at all.

this is a function of choosing the right degree, or taking a vocational college/apprenticeship instead: it annoys me no end when a youngster takes four years of art history and expects to work anywhere but a metropolis - even as a teacher their qualifications would be limited to the large centers because the market for students in these non-producer humanities areas is small. it's not that they're unimportant it's that we need only one for every hundred hundred thousand welders, mechanics, service technicians. nice work if you can get it

It amazes me that people are finally starting to get it, including Bill Maher. This has been a huge problem for decades and only growing. Most of the good jobs are only in certain areas. Many people move into these areas and the housing and rent prices skyrocket, making it a pay check to pay check existence. If the jobs were spread apart we wouldn't have the problems of extremely high costs of living.
@GrassPossum4 жыл бұрын
Mate there are fewer good jobs in those areas and Bill Maher is a very wealthy privileged person whose ignorance of orinary people and their lives is showing here. For someone who is not an American and extremely glad of it, I found watchjing this arrogant uninformed wanker to be repulsive. He is roundly insulting a lot of people. Many of whom are far smarter andplenty also who are better educated than he is. his simplistic outlook assumes that there is enough for everyone to have what he describes when it is not so, and only 1% of the population would have anything like what he describes and the educated percentage as such will not by any means be all Progressive or Liberal voters. Furthermore not all uneducated and backwards people are religious and not all religious people are unedducated and backward. He is the winner in a system which keeps the majority down. he is in no positionto pass judgement on the rest of that system. Just as the USA remains rich by looting the world and keeping much of it in chaos and poverty so too the 'elites' in the USA maintain their position on the back of keeping the majority poor and fearful.
@timf74134 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing, those big companies companies in thriving fields like tech are also competing for skilled workers who want to live in the areas that have the amenities and (for lack of a better term) "cool stuff" Bill mentioned and most of that needs a certain population density (and all around critical mass) in order to thrive. It's not as easy as saying "spread out", when the people who can afford it actually want (for the most part) to be clustered in those few hip areas.

I am 100% convinced there is not a single human being alive, or who has ever lived, or ever will live....who deserves or has "earned" a BILLION DOLLARS. That's absurd. That's impossible. A human being cannot do ANYTHING to deserve THAT. And this guy...has over 200 times that. At that point, I'm sorry....but you are in fact a sociopath. No human being deserves or is capable of earning that much wealth. You are simply an extreme outlier at that point....that somehow concocted a situation in which you were able to amass orders of magnitude more wealth than you could possibly earn in thousands of lifetimes. And we're supposed to feel excited for you getting to go to space? Neato. Have fun while you can Jeff. Because if you and people like you keep this shit up.....given history, we all know how this ends. Poor desperate hungry people can and will and have killed people like you in order to......you know.....survive. The gross thing is that I get the distinct impression Jeff feels zero shame or empathy. He probably doesn't even think about it. He doesn't understand how gross he is as a human being. I lived in Los Angeles for 7 years, after having been brought up in a "flyover" state. A description of much of L.A. in case you have never been: Apocalyptic infrastructure, trees ripping through the sidewalk, potholes everywhere, graffiti, cinderblock buildings with bars on the windows, weeds where there should be concrete, trash where there should be plants. Dirty needles litter the alleys, homeless people urinating or defecating on the street. Local businesses (small ones in particular) are overburdened with too many taxes and regulations, while illegal street vendors operate with too few, discarding their plastic and boxes of whatever they were selling all along the highway exits, which all eventually ends up on the beach or in the ocean. L.A. is a shit-show, and it's not even the worst "coastal" city (that would be Baltimore). And yet the Beverly Hills snobs think the sun shines out of their collective ass and gleefully look down their noses at "middle America", ignoring every local problem they are too incompetent and spineless to address. Of course in Maher's profound ignorance, he neglects that places like Salt Lake City, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Helena and many more have symphony orchestras. Maher decries "Chef Boyardee" Apparently he has never seen a working-class grocery store in Los Angeles. (Where does he think Omaha Steaks come from anyway?) And by the way, San Diego? A much better run city than L.A. or San Francisco, and far more politically balanced. But just take a look at what extended leftist policies did to cities like Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Oakland and Memphis. Along with San Francisco and Los Angeles, all once great cities, now ruined.

Where at in LA did you live? I lived in several places around LA so I'm curious where you were. You make LA sound like it's a wasteland. Of course Skid Row is a complete disaster area but you can't help people who don't want to be helped. I volunteered down there for two years and the amount of money and resources that are thrown at the problem is obscene. Also 80% of the homeless on Skid Row are from out of state. LA even offers a free Greyhound ticket back to wherever it is you came from. There's a huge infrastructure prop that passed that guarantees the majority of the jobs will be hired out of the local people in that area. A new stadium is being built which means jobs jobs jobs. And I've lived here for almost 8 years and the local vendors on the street always clean up after themselves so I have no idea what you seen and where at. Overall LA is a beautiful citry, of course there's problem areas but that's normal for such a huge population. You should've gotten out more when you were here because you really did miss out on a great city. It's a shame really.

@GmoneyMozart5 жыл бұрын
Historical red states? Those are historical democrat states. Does your history start yesterday? These states have gone republican relatively recently when looking st the history of the country. It’s only the past 40ish years that republicans truly broke into the south especially locally.
@AlbertLara5 жыл бұрын
Gmoney Mozart Stop nitpicking words just to make empty points. “Historical” is relative. The median age of people in the USA is 37.5 which means that (if we go by your 40 year quote) these states have been Republican 2.5 years longer than 1/2 the current USA population been alive. And that is not factoring in the 18 years necessary for a person to vote. You might as well say that dinosaurs rule the Earth because their era lasted about 186 million years compared to homo sapiens that have been around for 5 million years. The Republican policies of the last 40ish years has had more of an impact on the current status of these “dead last” southern states.
@gcs78175 жыл бұрын
Gmoney Mozart He means say “historically conservative states like MS, etc..”
@GmoneyMozart5 жыл бұрын
Albert L dinosaurs did rule the earth for a while, when looking at the history of the earth. I’m not sure what you’re even arguing. Within the context of the history of the country, Republican control in former Democratic controlled states is relatively new. And yes, republicans policies do have an impact. Many areas have become more industrial. Cities have blossomed. The average person has more opportunity and the chance at economic success compared to the reconstruction and Jim Crow eras is greater today. Just look at Texas as an example. If Texas goes blue in 10 years, a segment like this distorts how Texas’ economy got to be so strong. You can’t ignore the history of cities, states, the country, and the polices set forth by the governments when looking at what is blue or red in the present. There’s a reason NYC was cleaned up and is a safer city today then it was decades ago. It’s because Rudy Giuliani came into power and completely turned the city on its head. You don’t credit Bill Deblasio and pretend because he’s in power now that his political party is responsible for the success the city has had. That’s all this segment is. It’s Bill crediting the status of specific areas to Democrats who have nothing to do with how that status was achieved.

"Spacial Geographic Inequality". This is a brilliant new perspective, and an important observation to highlight that a huge portion of the entire globe's jobs and economic growth are migrating to only a tiny handful of key cities/companies on the planet (example Amazon/Jeff Bezos). It is having an immense impact society and explains a lot of the problems. Difficult to imagine a solution to this though. Universal Basic Income is looking like more and more like an inevitable requirement.

UBI will never be a good solution. it doesnt incentivize job creation. all a UBI will do is drives cost up higher in population dense cities. Businesses will raise prices knowing there is more money out there. If they dont also raise wages to keep employees, business will shut down. Our world isnt even close to being fully automated by AI anything.

It is more likely to me that Bill just wrote this stuff for the hate views and the attention he gets from controversy. He’s as much of a slave to the rules of the entertainment industry as anyone else, and it is a nasty, awful business. I have always disliked big cities and big city culture. People tend to have no value for themselves or each other when they are packed in boxes on top of each other. The further away from that I am, from that artificial chicken farm of an existence, the happier and happier I become. Bill has had a long life, and I’m sure he has experience enough to understand that where he is and the places he’s talking about are pretty much the opposite of where the party is, or where life is genuine or even tolerable a lot of the time.. But hey, you have to pretend to root for the home crowd just to get their applause, right?

As someone who appreciates 19th century landscape paintings, Shostakovich string quartets, and an abundance of classic literature, I have to say; I thoroughly admire and support the decent people from America’s heartland who love their family and their country and couldn’t care less about the perspective of just another arrogant statist boot-licking leftist snob. Now, I’m going to reread some Edmund Burke, put on a Bruckner symphony, and open a can of Chef Boyardee spaghetti.

@runi54135 жыл бұрын
I think it was just a poorly written bit, Maher didn't seem all that into it himself. They were working from that whole "Amazon shouldn't move to a major city" premise, but then got waaaay off-track talking about why people living in rural areas are dumb, ignorant Bible-thumpers who don't know how to have fun, (because those jokes are easy to write). But then they circled back to the Amazon thing... It didn't make any sense at all. (and it came off kinda juvenile and mean-spirited, I agree)

Also consider this, Bill, Amazon wouldn't just hire locals from Nebraska or West Virginia - they would hire from out-of-state citing lack of available talent. The only reason why they would do business in a flyover state is tax benefits. The only thing they would bring is additional economic hardship for the people that live in those states but don't qualify to work for Amazon. There's a term for that - gentrification.

I disagree. If more people move to your town the demand for everything goes up. Mechanics, doctors, cooks, janitors, tailors, retail etc. Question is are these ppl ready for change.
@joebin32865 жыл бұрын
Your wrong PJ. Go look at what happened in Monroe LA when Centurylink built their new headquarters and was forced to bring in so many jobs. Transplants moved there. Housing cost sky rocketed way more than anything would have in NY from a cost difference and once the two years were up people got out of there ASAP. Now inflated housing costs are dropping and people are losing money. It is not always good for some of the smaller communities.
@PJ-vh6jr5 жыл бұрын
@@joebin3286 Amazon would be more permanent than 2 years tho. The question, as i said, is are these communities ready for that kind of change? ppl complain there are no jobs while simultaneously fighting to keep their town as is. U can't have it both ways.

It seems some of those people from those red states didn't understand this segment, as always they don't see things beyond their nose, too hard headed, all they focused on was how smug Bill sounded and how he said true things that hurt but still are true. Granted, his delivery could've been different, if you want the other side to listen and not feel ridiculed uh... don't ridicule them, you have to talk to them as if they're little kids. They don't know what's good for them. Like every Trump voter they won't admit you a 'libtard' are right, so they take the "you insulted me" road.
