It makes sense to me that they did though. They were first loves that got married, but their marriage was a result of Cheyenne getting pregnant in high school, and they wanted their baby to have both parents, so they didn't get to date others, "shop around" as Van once called it. First loves usually don't work out anyway, but when you remember that they grew at different times and in different directions, all of those things together lead to divorce. A part of them will always love each other, but the Van and Cheyenne together chapter is over.

People keep talking about the adults being Van and Cheyenne. I can't help but think about when Kenny Chesney talks about the Grilled Cheese sandwich. Every time I hear this part makes me think of when Jake hated the sandwich Brock made. He thought it was due to Brock making it instead if Reba. I kinda like the idea that Van and Cheyenne divorced. There was a storyline where Cheyenne started growing as a person and Van started making money and Cheyenne didn't want to marry him again. I think that them divorcing, and eventually finding their way back together would be a nice plot for a spin-off/continuation.

I love this song very much, but the theme of the song is that they still love each other and the fact that they can’t tell each other is worse than the break up. You need to tell people how you feel and hope it’s not too late. But I hate when words are left unsaid.
