Rebecca, if you were to say if he was about to crack and cry while singing, well yes, he was, you can hear all those little pitch issues because he's singing while almost crying. And actually he cries after the "she runs" part, if you pay atention you can not only see him wiping his face, but also after "whatever makes you happy, whatever you want, you sou fu**ing special" right there, while finishing the word "special" you can see a tear dropping from his face. I always cry with him in that part, I can feel the crack in his soul!

Thom hated performing the song because it related to a past experience he never wanted to revisit. Long story short, he was obsessively in love with a girl in his school. So much so, he followed her around and stalked her. And that was the back story to this song. It was a feeling that he didn't have anymore. The mouth stretch is because of ear problems. As someone who's had ear issues (impacted wax, infections etc) this is a behaviour that can happen as a result. Our jaw bones connect to out skulls right under the ear. Our biology has evolved in a way that our ears help get cleared by chewing food. It's similar to how regular walking help digestion, particularly bowel movements. Thom exhibited this behaviour around 1996 to 1998.

Along with the lyrics that so perfectly express despair over a love never realized, what makes this song great is how dispirited Thom is for the verses, then kicks into intensity for the chorus, especially that incredible second chorus, when he is literally wailing his despair. Considering The Critical Debut Of This Song, It Has Defied, Surpassed, & Shattered Expectations For 28 Years. And That’s With A 7 Year Hiatus From Singing The Song Live. Incredible.

@@movieswithmatticus5469 exactly haha, so it’s not an edgy thing to have the opinion that this is not their best song if best song is defined in a subjective manner. Played yourself boi

@@TreetopGamer So you said it wasn't an edgy comment because it was a fact but then you agreed that music is subjective. So if music is subjective, then how can what OP said is true if it's just his opinion? Sounds like you don't know what you are talking about. Run along.

He found a form of words that precisely captures the sense of isolation and exclusion, and had the emotion to make it believable. Many people have felt that way, but been unable to gain release by expressing the emotion other than through the song... hence it's enduring popularity. I think Damien Rice's "O" was massive for the same reason.

When you loose someone that you loved so deeply !! like your wife and you have to perform a week later in from of a huge crowd that you have to take substances just to keep it together , you’re going to sing from the core of your heart whit imperfections , and transmit all of that pain ! Yeah he did that my outmost respect to him!

You know what, rebecca? If you get emotional, GET emotional. Do whatever you want... You feel you gotta cry, cry. I cry over music all the damned time and I'm a 47 year old man. I feel music. We're supposed to feel it.

I hadn't before seen this particular performance of this song, but you can tell that he's really feeling each note of the song, and it's amazing to watch someone else feel each note so strongly. I adore music for its ability to communicate and conjure emotion, so it's very rewarding to see someone else who isn't afraid to let their own emotions show in real time as they experience them from amazing music.

Are we really not going to talk about when Tom kind of broke and cried at the end?? He brought that from somewhere very deep, personal and painful. And as well know, magic comes from pain.
