To keep it idle for now. Use some tape and tape the maf sensor directly on to the intake pipe of the trottle body. The ecu is not seeing any air going in to the engine. If you do that it will idle way better

I'm really enjoying your content, and I wanted to provide some helpful feedback. I noticed that the water pump and the thermostat housing seem to have a buildup of murky/mud-like sludge, which could possibly indicate a blown head gasket. This is a known issue with RB20 engines, especially when higher boost levels are used. It's great to hear that the engine runs on all 6 cylinders, but it might be a good idea to check for a possible leak between the cylinders and the water jackets. You can easily do this with a coolant pressurizer and by filling the system with water. This way, you can flush the system and avoid wasting coolant. I apologize if this sounds a bit cautious, but I just want to make sure you're well-prepared as you work on building this awesome project!

Probably just crap because the car sat around for so long, considering it still has the stock turbo, injectors, etc doubt they ran enough boost for the head gasket to be an issue, that is an issue when you are running 20+ psi, of course he should test it anyway.

The injector clips - you dont remove the clip - you push them in to the body of the plug and they expand at the sides to release the plug. Same when fitting.

I'm 12 months too late but when it comes to diy gaskets try cereal box cut outs with permatex aviation gasket sealant on both sides. Only works with temps less then 70° . As good as oem, metal to metal with sealant is short lived.

RB's really rely on having an AFM hooked up and sending a proper signal, would explain your idle problems and even misfire.

when i ran my rb20det for the first time with no intercooler it ran like this, you should atleast run a pipe from the turbo outlet straight to the intake plenum and see if its any better, that way air will be going through the maf and turbo and it will be able to idle properly :)

It sounds like it needs to keep running after you buy the alternator and radiator. It seems like it has a big cold start.

Also you have to flush out the cooling system, all the gunk that you saw in the water pump and thermostat. That stuff is all through the passages.

I’m noticing a lot of people saying it’s not idling because of the maf, while yes maf has an affect but it would only idle higher, I’ve never had a maf disconnected and then start idling weird, just idle high

with the amount of sht in the water pump/thermo you should flush the block using the block drain on the turbo side back of the block to get rid of whatever you can before driving it.

MAF you need a MAF, its gonna idle high until you hook it up and plumb it in, ecu is in limp home mode without it, also you should have flushed the block out or your new rad is gonna be full of the gunk that you saw built up on the water pump and thermostat, to me thats an abnormal amount of stuff, it looks like someone used stop leak on it, either way FLUSH THE BLOCK, thank me later =)
