Rebuilding a Cummins ISX (pre-EGR)

Class of late 2012, BCIT Heavy Equipment Group. Dave, Shawn, Nick, and Braden rebuild a pre-2007 Cummins ISX15 for our level 4 practical. Thanks to Mark Mutter, our instructor this year.
The engine was leaking, had bearing damage, and multiple electrical faults, but after our 4 weeks with it, this ISX ran great, with no codes! Thanks again team, it was a great year.

Great video! The ISX is a robust engine. It's more durable than the Maxxforce. However, When a Cummins needs repair, you better dig deeper in your pocket.

MaxxforceTech A Briggs & Stratton is more durable than anything from Navistar...A Harbor Freight Chinese Honda knock-off engine is better built than Navistar’s best effort....I don’t know how Navistar is still even in business with the reputation that they have earned since the early 2000s.

You learn bits of it from foundation through third year, but year 4 is where you and your team will complete a tear-down and rebuild. The measurement and inspection process takes the most time during the project. Good luck! If you want to rebuild an engine before then, try to find a job working at a shop that rebuilds.

i know it's a trade school lesson but that is exactly what bothered me. i always do the engine or transmission or differential by MYSELF,,,,,,i take all the credit or all the blame if done wrong;

I rebuilt one with one other guy and it was pretty terrible. It takes a ton of communication.

saintsarecoming13 Two guys who have the same mindset and get along well can get the job done amazingly well. That kind of working relationship is very rare these days though. Sadly, in today’s world a shop with 10 mechanics may have two out of the ten that are dead serious about their craft. The rest are waiting on payday.

@@prevost8686 it wasn't so much a motivation thing, more that he had just started in the field and we were in a different state from different shops using tools that were provided instead of our own in an environment that neither of us work in. It just would've been easier, albeit more time consuming, on my own. Nothing against the guy because we had just met 3 weeks prior and he probably felt the same.

I personally think they just took it apart and performed measurements and reassembled engine with new gaskets. Thats how I was taught when going to LA trade tech. Then the next class comes thru and does the same thing.

there wont be a how to video on how to rebuild any motor. the different specs depending on the application and variations would make it impossible. buy a tech manual on the motor for step by step guide for specs and special tools also.

best way to rebuild an ISX is to throw it away and go back to the N14. That ISX is the worst piece of crap I've ever had to work with. not one single ISX I have ever run, which has been many has ever ever EVER run right.

Not trying to pick apart what they are doing, I think they are doing a pretty good job in the video, but I see some things I do not agree with. It looks like they re-used the old head or had it re-manned/cleaned. -- That would be a big No-No! if they did! -- It should have been replaced with a brand new one. Those heads are well known for not being any good/not lasting when re-using them. They also didn't let it sit overnight after torquing the head to it to 300 ft lbs to let the head gasket crush and re-torque it again the next day. Easily you will get 100-180 degrees more out of the head bolts after it sits overnight. They also used a big honkin' air gun to do the final 90-degree torque in the head instead of doing it by hand/feel. The combination of those mistakes always leads to under-torqued bolts in the head after the first 200-300k miles and higher risk of loosing another head gasket.

Actualy Rawzey., when rebuilding a heavy vehicle motor, all the had part are re-used including the pistins. The soft parts are what gets replaced such as: cams, piston sleaves, vvias, crank shaft bearings., and uper end... you will never see a rebuild in a big motor toss hard parts unless they are out of spec or damaged

Theres a loud ticking noise and im not sure what it could be since i did not go to diesel school im just a driver. However I am aware of unsual sounds from a regular engine although diesel engines are louder i just rather have an expert visualise and analyse....thanks.
