Looking at the weak rods, bearings and crankshaft, didn't your McLaren 675LT engine blow up because it was a little too powerful for weak rods to handle? I don't know if this was done by intentional design to create an eventual engine failure on the P1, but this sure looks like it. I mean, most billionaires can just buy another P1 no problem but I'm starting to see a pattern here. A lot of components were outsourced such as EMP Intercooler pump or a Mercedes emblem on a Bosch Maps, and signs of wear and tear that looks like the car did more than 300 miles, and an engine with weak rods that would have eventually failed. Is a factory P1 really worth 2 million? Thanks for the upload, I'm enjoying your rebuild series.

@user-lx1xe7bq5xThe machine doesn’t know it was designated salvage. If all of the mechanical parts are repaired or replaced to factory quality, then it’s exactly as safe as it was from factory. Similarly, a part doesn’t have a memory of being submerged. If you get it dry, like actually dry at all layers, and cleaned, then it’s fine. For porous materials you usually have to replace them, but a chunk of titanium or aluminum is either clean and free of corrosion, or it’s not. So, as long as it’s clean and free of corrosion it’ll be no more prone to failure than a factory part.

It also came with a hole in the floor board, a lot of rust, an oil leak, and a chip in the flywheel that made it impossible to start without taking a socket and turning the motor by hand, if it landed on the chip. It was a lot of fun, and my dad always pushed me to work on it myself.

Loving your series. I saw this car in Naples, so seeing it come back is awesome. As a home owner who had 7’ of water go through their house on Sanibel Island, I know first hand the amount of destruction the saltwater and ocean muck did. Insurance companies think you can just clean it with aggressive cleaning and pressure washing. I have had to completely remove everything down to the raw concrete block exterior walls from my house because of the muck and you taking apart this engine, 100% shows what the water and muck did.. so if it gets into every part of an engine just imagine an entire house. Thanks for giving me a break from the horror of rebuilding, dealing with contractors and the worst people on the face of the earth.. Insurance companies!!! @@emb647 let me tell you an even crazier thing. every McLaren engine up until this point is somewhat related to a Nissan. the R390 GT1. it's engine (VRH35L) had it's designs bought by McLaren. McLaren then handed those designs to Ricardo who then developed the M838T which is the engine found in the P1. the engine has some amazing engineering but it isn't a completely bespoke design and they still managed to make it cost half a million with weak links that should not exist on a car that pricey.

Great video - I love that P1 ! - My former office is right across the street from our McLaren dealer, our front doors are literally 25 metres apart. So I have seen many dozens of McLarens come and go here in Vancouver. Back shortly after they came out, I recall a damaged McLaren that had been in a shunt with a car and received damage on a front corner. For a normal car, it looked like one that would be in and out of auto body shop in a day, but not the P1...A Carbon Fibre Fibre McLaren specialist was brought in to evaluate it, and I watched as he went over and around the damaged area tapping with a little hammer and listening to the sounds and making notes and felt pen marks on the car. His conclusion was it could be repaired, and I assume it was. How long it took? I imagine it was a while...

You blew up 1 McLaren engine already why mess with a proven factory built unit , think McLaren know about engines period

@@delboyoelmundo4718 well I daresay we'll be finding out a few episodes down the line. Really with the guts wholly refurbed it'll just be a matter of whether the casing is up to the job and, it's going to have to have new cylinder liners regardless, so why not try to improve factory spec' whilst you're in a position to do so.If it doesn't work then it's an expensive lesson learned but, if it does, it is then a further earmark to an already infamous car. What a vehicle it could be at this point is better than what a vehicle it isn't at the moment with it's misshapen con rod at 300 miles.🤔

Amazing job guys 👍🏻 Wishing you best of luck as it’s a crazy project 👏🏻🤗 Shocked to see otherwise a 300 miles P1 with the pistons and rods in such a shape 😱 I have no clue how this can happen in a 2M$ car like this one… horrible if it’s factory made, which seems to be the case, and not from the water damage… You will improve it tremendously that’s for sure 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

With all due respect, McLaren, at least their street cars are garbage. My last job was in the exotic car industry, and they constantly broke. They sent us two replacement 12c's that broke within days of each other. Brand new engines broke in properly, and both pushed head gaskets almost at the same time. They replaced them with 650's, which had engine problems before they had 150 miles on them, and had to be sent back. We bought 720's, and they were no better. We finally stopped carrying the brand all together. Seeing the sub par rods, and damaged bearings with only 300 miles on the engine doesn't surprise me at all. Our Ferraris and Lambos took punishment on a daily basis, and never missed a beat. Especially the Ferraris.

@@carmanfinley58 Thanks for your detailed answer and that confirms what we’ve seen on this video…. McLaren are made with garbage engines that’s for sure 😱 Clearly the Ferrari’s, Lambos and even more Porsche (even though not boxing in the same category) would be much better choices for reliability purposes at least 😅

@@carmanfinley58 I have taken apart a few Ferrari engines, including older engines like the Colombo V12 and the early V8's. Ferraris may have their quirks no doubt, but as a whole, their engines are extremely stout. I know of McLaren issues, and I am an exotic car owner, and I would never spend a dime with McLaren. Seeing those bearings and that rod, what a joke. It just confirms what I always felt. They simply don't give a shit and it is just a business.

Would be nice to send those rods to a lab for destructive testing. Maybe Mclaren was using some special alloy to make them thinner.

That would be interesting to see. I'd be curious to know the composition and make of those rods, to see if they used some special alloy.

They are made for the power the car makes and no more as soon as you tune them increase the power etc. they’ll bend they’re made to be as light as possible this is where the “mclaren bad reliability” thing comes into play they are made to be as fast as possible the way they are that’s it
@joannaatkins822 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they're the light rods for a reason. It's down to less rotational mass for horsepower not torque. The torque figures on these engines are fairly low for the displacement and power because you make up that torque with the electric motors
@philtucker1224 Жыл бұрын
Whatever they are they should stick with the choice that McLaren made. Years of testing and research is done for a reason. Have some respect.
