Caution, some microwaves can have hot spots that may cause the egg to explode. Use lower wattage first to be sure. For me this works perfectly every time. This is a non traditional technique for poaching an egg when you’re in a hurry. I can poach two eggs using this method faster than the bread takes to toast. Because it cooks using the microwaves plus the heated water, there’s a two way cooking process. So it’s fast! If your eggs are fresh, you’ll find it works amazingly. If you’re eggs are old, you will get mixed results, so always use the freshest eggs possible. Microwaves have different wattage strengths, therefore it may take a little less or a little longer. Experiment, turn off and check after 45 seconds, then continue so you don’t over cook it. You can also use two eggs in a larger bowl, I find cups easy. Half a cup of water per cup does the trick. Enjoy perfect poached eggs.

Be cautious that anything with hot spots in a microwave can explode, even plain water with build up of steam. I've tried this on many microwaves and it works perfectly, but Not all microwaves are created equal. Safety first. 👍😀

To safely avoid the "explosion" factor, just lightly prick the yolk even using the tip of a sharp paring knife. Simpler and better is using a good old toothpick! No fail!

I have been making microwave poached eggs for over 20 years. One tip I learned working in a hospital kitchen as a dietary aid...make sure the water you drop the egg in is hot. Yes, one minute cook time. But I found out early on that if you use cold water, the egg yolk often explodes before 1 minute in the microwave. This is because the microwave cooks from the inside out and if the water is cold, the egg yolk will reach a very high temperature before the white is cooked and it often explodes!...in your microwave. Anyhow, hope this helps. :)

For all those who ended up with eggsplosion in their microwaves, the MOST important thing that was NOT mentioned here is the power level! If you don't want to be cleaning up eggroclastic debris from your microwave for the rest of the morning, change the power level to 600. Also, adding about a tbs of vinegar helps keep the egg white intact. You can salt it later. And if the white looks like it could do with a little more cooking, just leave it in the hot water for a minute or two, rather than actually microwaving it longer, which could overcook the yolk.
@tonys1636
@tonys1636 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering what the wattage of his microwave was, he made no mention of it. One minute in a 600 watt one is far different to one minute in my 1000 watt one without adjusting the wattage.

I agree with the comments below, two of the most important pieces of information are the wattage of the microwave and the amount of water. If people use a cup of water and only have a 900-watt microwave it will take a lot longer. By giving them the wattage of your microwave and the amount of water you used they have least got a starting point. Egg size (weight) is also helpful. I did try this method yesterday but I found I needed to cook longer to get the white cooked through as my microwave is only 900watt.

Yup. It works great. And you can use eggs that have been in the fridge a while, not like some other chefs say - like you have to use "super fresh" eggs less than a day old. BS. This method really works well on any eggs. Just use 1/2 cup cold water. You can use a small bowl instead of a cup, too.
@billsharp8992
@billsharp8992 Жыл бұрын
Put the cup with the egg and water on a carrier plate (salad plate) and cover the cup with a plastic (or microwavable bowl) to eliminate the cleaning of the microwave if the many variables of this process do not come together perfectly during your initial attempts. The wattage of your microwave, the size of the egg, the starting temperature of the egg, the starting temperature of the water, the amount of water, and the number of coyotes in Wyoming at any given time can affect the outcome. Overall, it's a good process, once you get the parameters under control.

So this worked out perfectly, I purchased a clear coffee cup from the dollar store and was able to adjust the time and watch closer. My job provides a toaster so all I needed was a slice of bread. Joel, great idea and recipe because here in rural kentucky, if you have a microwave, it is pretty much used as a reheater of left overs, popcorn popper, and we don't eat many canned items, but let us say a soup heater in a pinch. Anyway, good trivia question for your chef pals, but you fellows may already know. In rural ky. Most folks raise their own chickens for eggs or buy/swap something for fresh eggs, i guess what most people on the food shows would call free range or organic, here we just call them fresh eggs, the chickens are kept in a hen house with a wire fence coop to keep them in and predators out. It would be almost unheard of to see someone who uses those bleached white eggs from what i would call a sweat shop egg facility, hormones and the like. Chickens here are fed naturally, but we did find that growing some oregano an feeding to chickens with their feed is supposedly a good natural antibiotic. Anyway, the trivia info, an eggs shell color, cream, spotted, light brown, dark brown, a blueish hue, whatever the color of the shell, it is determined by the color of the chickens earlobes, you have to spread the feathers a little to see, but it is a fact

At 3 a.m. I was watching this and just had to try it. I love poached eggs, but no way of making them has been ideal. So I went to the kitchen, found the ideal small glass bowl and followed these directions. I did 60 seconds in my 800 watt microwave and got the most perfectly shaped poached egg you can imagine. However, the yolk was a tad less liquid than I like. Forty-five seconds was the trick, and I have no reason to ever go back to any of my old methods that involved simmering water, etc. Thank you so much for posting this method. It is a genuine winner!

Presuming a standard domestic microwave (UK), boil kettle first to make a cup of tea, use boiled water in plastic bowl (easier to handle), into the microwave for 1 minute.. cover (just in case and until you work out exact timing for your mw..) if underdone just leave it while you butter your toast rather than increase cooking time.. an extra 10secs can get messy. Overall this really does work a treat. In the mid 80s I ate every day for breakfast.. timing was eggs into pan of boiling water (we didn't have a new-fangled microwave) when I turned toast over (eye level gas grill, Mighty White bread), by the time toast done and buttered.. eggs done to perfection! 🙂

I followed instructions to the letter. Placed a large egg in cup of water and microwave for 60 seconds. Placed on my toast, so excited to eat, when imagine my surprise when I touched the top of the egg with my knife it exploded in my face! Plus the yoke was almost solid not runny! Luckily no burns but I suggest a person experiment with size and shape of cup, size of egg and the amount of time microwaving the egg. Its like a science experiment to get the egg to your particular liking.

I know it's been 5 years or so since you first posted this but reckoned it was worth replying to your post. I am a retired chef in South Africa and as a chef, I have for years had a total aversion to microwaves and have steadfastly refused to cook in one as I believe it makes chef's lazy and taking short cuts that are detrimental to food preparation. I have always done my poached eggs the traditional way, but this morning, I decided to give this method a try, highly skeptical, I might add. Well, the bottom line is that I am amazed at how well it worked, but find that 50 seconds was perfect given my microwave and when using the 60 seconds recommended, meant that they were overdone. So, I have just had two beautifully poached eggs on toast for breakfast in half the time it normally takes me and without the usual adding of a bit of vinegar and swirling the water rapidly before gently dropping the eggs into the water. Thanks for this , it is much appreciated as it means I can have poached eggs, which I love, far more often than I have been having before.

What worked for me was full power for 40 seconds and then 80% for 20 seconds. Trial and error.... Depending on size of egg and temp of water, I've also done 50 seconds full power and 10 seconds at 80%. Thank you for this shortcut!!!

Got up at 4am this morning to try this out and it actually works. Though you wattage is relevant to how long it takes to cook. I have an 800w microwave so my egg took 2mins to pouch to how i like it. But even so I’m very impressed when ever I’m in a rush and need something quick and simple this method has now beaten my go to marmite on toast. Very informative.

I can attest to too much water above the egg has a great impact on cooking time. Depending on the bowl-cup used to cook in... I am addicted to grits with poached eggs on them... Which is pretty much my everyday breakfast... I used a cup of cold water in a lg mug... Took nearly 3 min. to get where I like them (runny yolks)... The second egg, I did 1/2 cup water inn same mug...60 secs. later perfect egg. 😊...so too much water over the top of egg takes too long... Next time I might go a tad under 1/2 cup water... Great vid, btw ... 👍

Wow, no-brainer!! I love poached eggs, and I've tried the drop-in-a-pan-in-a-vortex method, but that only works if you have day-fresh eggs. Then there's the cling-film method. Greasy. I have a poaching pan, but it's not terribly convenient, and for some reason chefs consider it amatuer or something ....Well, I am an amatuer! This method looks so simple! I'm going to try it

How about a quick review from a person who is a NON-cook? The egg was perfectly done, for me, but it's because I tend to like my eggs with a soft-boiled consistency (only slightly runny), as opposed to a runnier poached egg. My only complaint is that I had to microwave my egg for a total of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. My microwave is a pretty good Kenmore with ~ 1100 watts. I nuked it for 1 minute, but the middle was still raw and the inner circle around the egg was clear, with only the edges turned white. I like this recipe because of the simplicity - no pan, no butter, no watching over it, etc., and the final product was excellent, so I will definitely use this method. Thanks!

When I saw this, I did not think it would work, but I was wrong! My microwave is a 1200 watt model and 60 seconds produced a perfect poached egg. I then tried it with 2 eggs in the same Pyrex measuring cup, and while it worked, it took 90 seconds and the whites were more like soft-boiled eggs, being harder than a typical poached egg. The yolks also cooked unevenly. However, it is so easy and quick you can just do 2 back to back if you prefer 2. Thanks for this tip! It is much easier than making on the stove top! 2 minutes start to finish makes this one a keeper! :D

It is surprisingly amazing how the volume and friggin’ shape of the cup you use in this recipe spells success or failure. Went thru about 9 different thrift shop purchased cups before I hit the perfect everything…size, shape, material…..and two eggs in - I dropped the damn thing and….Bam. Smashed to smithereens. Oh, Egg…you are a tough cookie to tame but I love you💗!

Well, in a 900w microwave, 40 seconds might have done the trick for one egg. Looked like it needed a bit more time so I gave it 20 more seconds and with 2 to go, it exploded everywhere. The egg was thoroughly cooked however... So whilst lunch to 58 seconds to make, the clean up operation took 20 minutes!

To those who wonder how long to cook, depending on your microwave's wattage- it'd be difficult to say. Some people like a firmer (still runny) yolk, but completely cooked whites (me!). My micro is 900wts & 50 secs is enough cook time. The trick is that you can leave it in the hot water and it'll continue to cook through. As others have said, it's trial & error, but once you get it, it's a fantastic way to get the perfect soft egg. I like to layer a toasted bagel w/ cream cheese, avocado mash, crumbled feta, smoked salmon, some capers, then the egg on top w/salt & pepper. O.M.G !!! It's out of this world delicious. Bon Appétit!

Welp incase you're like me and wanted to see how it went, (and yes it is almost 4 am)... But I just did this, and it worked. But what you might want to take note of is the more water you have in the bowl, the longer it takes to cook. I had a full, kinda large ceral bowl 3/4 full of water, plus the egg which added more to it volume to it, so I cooked for 1 min, it wasnt enough... To fix this issue I just kept on cooking for 30 seconds at a time till I saw it turn from clear, to white, so it took more like a good 3 mins for me of solid microwave time, broken up into half minute intervals, but after this it turned out pretty awesome. The egg white was cooked, whole thing stayed intact very well, I was able to lift it up easily with a spoon and place it on my toast.... and then I cut into that bad boy to see a perfectly runny yolk to enhance the buttery toast to a new level... 👍 definitely gonna do this more often and experiment with the water and salt levels to perfect the method... Also, I should add that I did wake people up with the beeping of just pressing the microwave buttons, even tho I was catching it every time at 1..... Dont let it happen to you 😂👍

I tried it two ways one without salt for 60 seconds and one with salt for 60 seconds. The salted one was a disaster. The whites were still clear and the egg fell apart. I think the 60 second one without salt was best. Could have been 50 I think as it needed to be more creamy inside. I can add salt later is fine. My Microwave is 1100 watt and I used half a cup of water with large organic eggs.
