Record Store Day 2023 - I Almost Missed THIS Release!!!

I went in looking to pickup the RSD copy of The Violent Femmes and Soul Asylum MTV Unplugged along with the new Latin remix of Run the Jewels 4 that came out the day before. I couldn't find Violent Femes but as I was flipping through the used records I found a VG+ 1984 pressing of it. I was thrilled to find it over the RSD release. I also picked up the Mr Bongo boxset on a whim while waiting to checkout and have been pleasantly surprised by it. I managed to get to a second store later in the day and he still had multiple copies of Scott Weiland. Unfortunately no Soul Asylum. Some people may think I'm crazy for doing this but I ended up trading my Scott Weiland for Soul Asylum with someone online. While I like the Weiland album I love the Soul Asylum album.

I also was unfamiliar with many of the titles on the list. I wanted all five of the Soul Jazz Records releases, went to three stores and was able to get three of the five, and I ordered a fourth one (New York Noise) online. The Eric Dolphy release is amazing and I saw so many copies at every store I went to. I really wanted the Peel Session for Echo and the Bunnymen, but one store I went to staff said they only got one copy and it sold with the first group of people in the store. I saw Brown Sabbath but had no clue about it. And I can't believe I passed on the Koko Taylor. It was a good one this year. Your channel showed up in my feed and now I'm subbed :)

Thanks for the SUB! I love Soul Jazz Records Releases - I have almost all of the Studio One comps. I want to get more of these punk rock and other genres they have. I like they are re releasing them in color versions.

Some great pickups you got there. Another thing to look out for on the RSD lists is whether they are listed as "Exclusive" or "First". Exclusives are only released at Indie record stores and Firsts will have a later and wider release. The MMW was a First so it should be coming back out...probably a different variant though at some point...hopefully it won't be very far off as I was not able to snag it. I also missed out on the Brownout but it was a First as well so I'll be keeping an eye out for it. You definitely win the VC Cinematography category, nice work!

Enjoying your channel. Picked up Chet, Miles and Joe Strummer at a small shop north of LA. Got the one record i really wanted, Albert Ayler boxset, online Sunday morning, plus the Mars Volta ep and a Polish Jazz album. Thinking about the Brazil 45 box, but did get the New York Noise on eby for a good price yesterday. 😊

​@@PiecesofVinyl If you're getting into Brazilian rare groove stuff I would highly recommend the legendary Brazilian Beats Brooklyn compilation from Mr. Bongo, curated by my friend Greg Caz. It was recently reissued on vinyl, though I have the CD. This is not audiophile stuff so I'm not sure vinyl is necessary.

You seem to like a lot of the same music as me lol. Is Les Imprimés on your radar, from Big Crown Records? They just announced his debut Lp coming out in August. This guys is pretty amazing. What tripped me out is that he's from Norway, and making some killer soul music.

I have the C1 color on Pre order! Check out timmion records they are from Finland. They do a lot of stuff with Daptone and big crown. So sick that you like this stuff too man tell the world!

I thought this years record Store Day was a particularly strong one for selections and titles. I got up at the crack of dawn so as to be sure to get The Nuggets Box set, the Brown Out album and the Tangerine Dream and Edgar Froese records. I also got the Roy Ayers Stoned Soul Picnic. I was able to get pretty much everything on my list and went back on Sunday to hunt down the one title i missed (the Ukrainian punk rock group). Glad I budgeted wisely - including trips to CoinStar to cash in my bag of quarters (don't laugh I got over $40! which paid for a whole album) my lottery scratch ticket surprise win the day before gave me another $50 and the chance to pick up something special. Like you I was surprised that my record store had been able to get in some UK and European record store day release, and some stuff I don't remember seeing on the official list. I am intrigued by some of the records you grabbed (wish I new about that Mr. Bongo) and plan to search the music out - we obviously have a lot of similar tastes. Glad you had such a positive Record Store Day.

I realized after the video that the Brown Sabbath is 45RPM! It sounds amazing I totally would have mentioned that. I would totally cash in quarters or scratch offs or whatever to get more vinyl - you are right $40 is a record!

While looking through many YT videos I was surprised how some stores dealt with titles that they only received 1 copy of. Customers reported some stores doing silent bids for Macho Man, 1975, and Stevie Nicks. Is that the point of Record Store Day ? I also noticed on the same day that every listing for Macho Man on discogs was from stores with the official independent record store insignia listed for $200 That just depressed me.
