Red belt Judo: The Nobuyoshi System

My father Nobuyoshi Higashi is 82, had been doing judo his whole life, and is a red belt. This is some of the stuff that he used to do. Use an armpit grip and a lapel. Shohei Ono uses this grip a lot. The armpit post creates a lot of tension compared to the sleeve grip. This is perfect for o soto gari and a lot of turn throws. Leading with the right leg, my dad would go for ko uchi gari and harai maki komi. The harai maki komi would block the shin and rotate for a powerful harai. In addition to this, he would attack sasae from the collar grip. What makes his system interesting, is an opposite-sided attack that he adds in. He adds a cross-body left-sided o soto gari where he hangs on the body to block the leg and run them down to the ground.
To sum up:
Ko uchi, sasae, and a harai to the right. A sneaky left o soto gari.
One of my favorite takeaways when I talk to my father about judo is what it means to be a red belt. He said, "A red belt is what's left over after you harai goshi is gone."
Collar and arm pit grip. Right kouchi, right harai. Sasae, Left osoto, Left Ippon seoinage.
Great for strong, athletic, Risk takers.

Someone else said it, and I think it's a great idea, but it *would* be cool if you had a video of your father imparting knowledge. No gi or mats or anything. Just a sit down at a table with a couple of mics and just positing on things like: - any anecdotes he has, - war stories from the mat, - fitness tips and any diet/lifting regimens he used to follow, - how he trained you and the influences he had on your development (as a person as well as a judoka), - what got him into the sport, what got you in it, - and just any general crack about what kind of guy he is and what he enjoys, - you can think of the rest, etc.

I have got my black belt now, and this year (2023) I will try to find my own judo, even if it is crappy at first. I will give it my all to learn the Higashi Nobuyoshi's style, and personnalise it. Kouchi gari (tripping attempt) is a great weapon to setup other techniques. I love it aldready.

I love that armpit grip. So many people use it; Koga, Inoue, Ishii, Ono, etc. The only thing I don't really like about the armpit grip is that unlike the sleeve you don't have as much ability to rotate the opponent. Whereas with the sleeve, if I can keep the grip (a big if) I get more secure rotation. I guess another trade-off is that it's hard to keep that grip (I'm thinking of RvL situations; good guys will break your grip the moment you go for a throw), whereas they can't break the armpit grip.

Dang, you cut the hair. It was cool to hear some back story on your father. I would be interested on knowing what his opinion has been on your, what I would call, progressive methods of Judo. Adapting techniques from your Judo and wrestling for Jiu Jitsu. Also love that you aren't all snarky about the jargon🤙
@shannons1886

Still Rolling his Dad was definitely open to new methods. I came in as a D1 wrestler and just double legged and firemans every move I did and he was ok with it. He eventually pulled me aside and said to try new moves lol. Shintaro wrestled his whole life and college as well. I also trained at a few other places in NYC with other Japanese Senseis (including his Dad’s best friend) and they definitely were not as welcoming to wrestlers. Even funnier is that I wore my striped bjj white belt when I started there and he never said a word about it. Even trained in my Renzo bjj gi for a few months for getting a real judo gi.

Really really like this. I would be very tempted for the osoto on the right? why did he opt to not use it? Just a personal preference or is there a strategic reason?. Feel like this grip would allow some close quarters aggresive attacks in BJJ as well to upset the usual stiff arm pyjama dance to telegraphed single or guard pull.

Fascinating to see the collar/armpit grip. The few throws exhibited in Hung Gar kung fu forms are based around grabbing/pushing the torso as opposed to conventional body/arm combo. Really cool to see so many other variations that can be done! Love watching your videos!

I like this grip a lot, the only problem I have with it is people who like to go overhand grip (R v R), they kind of dominate you this way because you leave their sleeve free. Any suggestions?
