I am so happy to find you two! I had weight loss surgery in 1996 and it went well for 20 years than it all went haywire. I am now disabled from it. Basically my digestive system rejects almost everything I eat. Meat is the worst so in the last year I have been transitioning to beans, lentils ect and it is so hard to find easy, tasty meals. Thank you so much for the easy recipes I have so far found here. It really is life or death for me to find food that is high protein and nutritional. I have to have more calories so I will fry in ghee or butter and eat rice but making this tonight. I love this recipe.

A tip from my mother: Red lentils should be soaked overnight or minimum 20 minutes and then rinsed before cooking. The scientific reason behind this is to remove the oligosaccharides and phytic acids, making them less likely to cause bloating. I love this recipe and have made it 3 x now.

Not really. I cook it often. Just needs to be rinsed well before cooking

Dal is staple in India. had with almost every meal. Soak the lentils in lukewarm water for half hour or so. It helps them to break up faster and improves the texture of the dal. We usually have it with roti (indian flat-bread) or steamed rice. But I can eat dal just like that anytime.

Try heating up oil in the pan first, and then adding the spices so they fry a bit. I suggest adding onions (stir for two minutes), and then add the more watery vegetables :) Awesome recipe though!! Glad to see that people across the world enjoy daal as much as we do :D

I made a couple modification to this wonderful recipe yesterday and it was absolutely delicious! I love ground coriander but didn't have any in hand so I just didn't add it to my Dahl. Instead I added ground paprika, ground chili pepper, ground chipotle and only 1 TSP of curry powder. I also added 1/2 of a orange bell pepper and the results where amazing! **Thank you guys!!**

I wing things now, after a couple of years, but I still get great ideas from you guys. I have an Asian market near where I live so the sky is the limit, including Tamari .and vegan fresh kimchi (is that an oxymoron?) tamari to you equals The Blue Whale to Alan Davis on QI .... except you get lucky every time! Would you guys happen to have an idea of something I could try to hide this texture a little ? (be it in this recipe or another)
@thehappypear9 жыл бұрын
Florian Saugues A tin of cooked lentils could do the job they have a slightly less "lentilly" texture, haha. But you could use peas or chickpeas or beans or even all the above. Hope this helps.

Florian Saugues If you have a pressure cooker you can cook the lentils in a few cups of water and wait for 3-4 whistles. That would mash up the lentils and you would get rid of the texture.

guys, actually u need a bit of oil, because vitamins are liposoluble... your body won't be able to proceed them well if you don't add any
@thehappypear9 жыл бұрын
That's pretty interesting, we'll look into that, where did you read it? Is it all vitamins? Thanks for the comment.
@Skeir0n9 жыл бұрын
It is actually not quite true for all vitamins: fat solubles are A, D, E and K (actually the fat soluble ones are the ones your body can store)... C and B are water soluble and you need a fresh dose more frequently. So for tomatoes, containing C, K, A, B and E vits, a bit of oil does wonder for your body. and I am sorry but don't know the source, my brother does dietology and he just wrote an exam on that topic...
@Gee-xb7rt6 жыл бұрын
your brother is right, and the oil free thing is a bit over-hyped. i think because so much of the western diet you hear how bad oil is, and it is if you use excessive amounts of it, especially when its some mess oil like gmo corn/cottonseed/soybean oils, add in animal fats, and well, you got a mess. the west in generally struggles with either/or mentality on just about everything. if you don't want to cook with oil than you can add whole food fats like nuts and seeds to a meal. the fats in this daal are really minimal, and while lower calorie is good, calories really aren't the enemy, empty calories are.
