I need to sleep but had a thought about Revali's theme from BOTW and I need to get it out. So in each of the fights against the Blights, an SOS signal can be heard. And Red, you noticed that for Daruk, Mipha, and Urbosa, the signal shows up relatively early in the theme and is integrated more fluidly with the theme itself. But Revali's shows up later, and is more jarring, as if it was more panicked and rushed to execute. But something bothered me about it all: if the Champions were sending out distress signals, why did no one show up to help? Maybe each settlement was busy fending off the Calamity, but none of the Zora, many of which were alive at the time, mention Mipha calling for help nor any attempts to rescue her. So that implies that they couldn't hear the SOS signal. But then what was the point of having an SOS function if no one could hear it? Well, the Divine Beasts are ancient Shiekah tech, so they would be compatible with ancient Sheikah tech. Perhaps the intent of the SOS signals was that if one Divine Beast was compromised, the other three could move in to deal with it. The only ones who could hear the distress signals at all were the other Champions, and perhaps the holder of the Sheikah Slate. So imagine Urbosa, and Mipha, and Daruk. They rush to their Divine Beasts, but are met with terrible foe. They might be able to win, or they might not, so they broadcast that they are under attack, so that their comrades know their situation, and so that maybe someone can help them. Now imagine Revali. Pride backed by skill and powerful abilities. Being able to fly, he would likely be the first to arrive at his Divine Beast and face his foe. But he's Revali. He's a Champion. He has the best bow in Hyrule, bomb arrows galore, peerless skill, mastery of flight, and straight up wind magic. This foe is just an obstacle. A mere attempt by Ganon to slow him down and keep him from raining hell on the cocky calamity. The idea of even using the SOS function likely never crossed his mind. And then, while dueling with a foe unlike any he's faced before, one that seems tailor made to kill him, he hears them. Vah Ruta. Vah Naboris. Vah Rudania. Every other Champion is under attack. Every other Champion is locked in combat with a foe that is likely just as much of a counter to them as Revali's foe is to him. Mipha is strong in the water, but that strenght can be knocked out from under her like a pillar. Daruk doesn't have the mobility or range to deal with a flying foe. Urbosa commands powerful lightning, but if that were to be nullified, she only has her swordsmanship. They all need help, and Revali, the best there is, is going to be the one to save them and turn this fight around. He's the only one who can. He started his fight first, so his foe is the closest to being felled. His Divine Beast's ability to fly allows it to get to any place in Hyrule far more swiftly than the other Champions could possibly accomplish. And that pesky sworsman is going to have his hands full protecting the Princess and dying like a loser. So even reminded of the SOS function, he doesn't use it. He doesn't need a rescue- he will be the rescue. And Revali, arrogant as he is, would die before accepting defeat. The only way he could admit defeat is if it was staring him in the face, pressed against his chest with his body broken and burned. Revali never sent a cry for help- he knew that no one could answer. He sent his final words. Words that he could never bring himself to speak. "I am sorry. I have failed."

I think the reason people view Wind Waker Ganondorf as more complex and morally grey is that his actions are framed differently by giving him a motivation that actually seems sympathetic, even if the end result (a world conquest attempt) is the same. In all the rest of the games with Ganon and Ganondorf, he's the King of Thieves, either man or beast, wanting to conquer out of a lust for power. But not Wind Waker. In Wind Waker, Ganondorf, at the end of the game, gives his motivation more as a royal obligation to his people. He's the King of the Gerudo and, in his telling, he set out to conquer Hyrule so that his people would no longer have to suffer in the desert. He depicts himself as the underdog, a leader of an oppressed people who would not suffer exile to the desert any longer. Yes, he ravaged Hyrule and fully is fine killing Link, who is like 10 yrs. old. But it is worth noting that there is perhaps some symbolic significance to the fact that the villain in Ganondorf, not Ganon- *never* Ganon. You fight Phantom Ganon (who is humanoid, like OOT) and Puppet Ganon (a puppet construct), but never Ganondorf himself transformed into Ganon. He is, until the very end, the King of the Gerudo- a man. Now, of course, you can choose to not buy Ganondorf's interpretation. Nabooru is pretty unhappy with Ganondorf in OOT and the Gerudo are never shown to have left the desert even though Ganondorf reigned for 7 years. And on top of that, Iron Knuckles have Gerudo models in the armor, implying Nabooru isn't the only Gerudo brainwashed to serve as one- not very benevolent of Ganondorf. One could argue that even if he originally intended to help his people, the Future/Adult Setting of OOT shows he ultimately lost his way and became consumed simply with a hunger for power, caring only to cement his rule and exact retribution. But, if you *do* take Ganondorf at his word in Wind Waker, he takes on more of a Magneto-esque role: a man of immense capacity for violence from a persecuted group refusing to "take it sitting down" anymore. How just his actions and how honest his professed motivations are is something the player/reader decides for themself. Of course, even if you do interpret him sympathetically in WW, that is definitely the minority portrayal for Ganondorf. He very much tends towards the "Evil; that's it, no complex motivations, I'm just evil" portrayal in the rest of the series.
@Envy_May Жыл бұрын
ganondorf actually doesn't say anything about his people in the wind waker. he explains his background, but then he says, " *i* coveted that wind " - he still frames everything on himself which i personally feel like shows that he's being completely honest but also still blatantly self-centred
@wolv0223 Жыл бұрын
@@Envy_May I went on Zelda Dungeon to get the script of the game, since I didn't recall the exact wording, and you are right, that he doesn't mention the Gerudo specifically: *"My country lay within a vast desert. / When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing... Death. / But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. / I coveted that wind, I suppose. / It can only be called fate. ...That here, I would again gather the three with the crests. / ...That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder... That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down... / The power of the gods... The Triforce! He who touches it will have whatever he desires granted! / Already, the crest of wisdom is mine... / All that remains... / Do not fear. I will not kill you... / I merely have need of the power that dwells within you. / Now! Let us put an end to that which binds us together! / Gods! Hear that which I desire! / Expose this land to the rays of the sun once more! Let them burn forth! / Give Hyrule to me!!!"* . He does, however, mention his "country", and depending on one's view of "country", it could refer simply to his geographical origin, but could also refer to his people. I had always taken country to mean more than just the land, but the people too, and thus saw him as lamenting the suffering all those in the desert- his people, the Gerudo. However, I suppose you are right that he could just simply have despised his own condition and sought salvation and paradise for himself alone, something which would fit with Ocarina of Time's lack of movement for the Gerudo, who do not leave the desert and in fact further isolate themselves by destroying the bridge. . I think, however, part of the reason why I (and others) are inclined toward a more charitable view is that this Ganondorf is certainly more... somber. Yes, he does have a break down and decides to kill you more or less out of spite for the Triforce being taken by the King of Red Lions. But before that, we have him framing his desire for Hyrule as being the end of a long road of suffering, and he even says that he has no desire to kill Link, something I had forgotten. Until he snaps, he just wants his wish. And when he dies, he chuckles and says "The Wind is blowing", almost as if resigned to his death, seeing himself caught be "the wind that brings death", unable to outrun death in the end. . Overall, he just has a very different tone to go along with a very different framing- one of a suffering man seeking paradise over damnation, rather than simply a warlord or usurper. And the end has the King of Red Lions basically saying he himself had regrets, and was attached to the past like Ganondorf (though I forget if he ever makes clear what he would do different if he could do things over again, as he wanted to). It's somber and about moving past the old Hyrule, it's conflicts and grudges. It's not about just defeating evil, it's about moving on from old conflicts, which I think does something to validate Ganondorf. It frames it as everyone in the past was flawed, made choices that contributed to the downfall of Old Hyrule, and frames the conflicts as old grudges. And in validating Ganondorf that way, justifying his anger by proximity to the regrets of one of the heroes (the King) and drawing a parallel between them as being stuck in the past, it serves to make Ganondorf seem less "black" and more "grey", which in turn leads to reinforcing more charitable interpretations of his motivations (viewing "country" as including the Gerudo people and thus implicitly framing the suffering as Ganondorf bearing the suffering of a downtrodden people). Apparently the JP version is a bit shorter, but the language is very formal, old, and structured in almost poetic ways, and thus the longer and more descriptive ENG seems to be trying to capture the sort of poetic/tragic nature of Ganondorf's speech in a way that works in English- which, again, lends himself to sympathy, because who doesn't love to feel bad for a tragic character? . Of course, as I said, it's perfectly valid to interpret it as a selfish and that the tragedy is, to him, entirely personal (though considering the very direct connections to OOT [references to the Hero of Time included], glancing over his status as King of the Gerudo in Old Hyrule seems to miss a piece of context). The extrapolation of caring for the Gerudo or even caring about their suffering very well could be a step too far. I do think, however, that for people who played WW and OOT, there's certainly a clear path of how they would reach such a conclusion, even if that path is sometimes half filled with extrapolations and interpretations. They're leaps, but they're logical ones. And I think I personally will stick with my "slightly more morally complex" Wind Waker Ganondorf, even if I treat the rest of the series' Ganondorf portrayals as bog standard evil villain. I think it makes Wind Waker stand stronger without having to diminish the rest of the series so longas you simply recognized Classic, OOT/Modern/"Child Timeline", "Toon"/"Adult Timeline", and BotW Era as being distinct lines of story that don't necessarily follow the same rules and characterizations. . It is amusing. I have recently been looking at other claims made by people looking at the Zelda series in tragic ways, and going "Actually, that's wrong." Like pointing out that the the idea that Goddesses' granting their powers (not Demise's Curse) is what keeps the endless cycle of conflict with Link/Zelda/Ganon is simply wrong, as TP is the only game where it's possible to interpret the Goddesses as granting power to initiate the conflict. Or pointing out that a commenter was mistaken in remembering Groose talking about making the "Groodo" warrior women (that misremembered piece of evidence was used to explain that Gerudo men bear the curse of Demise to tragically turn the descendants of Groose- one of the heroes who fought him- against the others). . And yet here I am, having to be told my own tragic interpretation is itself extrapolation partially based on misremembered information, albeit used more narrowly (one game rather than the whole premise of the series). I wonder how many people are like this, having grand ideas the series or even just one on game in it predicated partially on bad memory, leading to them unknowingly elevating it from "headcanon/personal interpretation" to "canon/the main interpretation" in their head.

34:00 Thanks to the new Hylian pinecone mechanic, you don't absolutely NEED Rivali's gale. The Hylian pinecones are a bit more cumbersome to use, but they have exactly the same effect. So, having Rivali's gale would just be more of a convenience than something that completely changes the face of your gameplay due to it's absence. The wind power you get in this game, being a horizontal gust, has a lot more utility to it than Rivali's gale ever did. It seems lack-luster by comparison when you first see it, but then you start actually using it for stuff and you never want to go back.
@rmsgrey Жыл бұрын
Eh. The basic use case for the horizontal gust - to cover more ground sideways before running out of down - is also covered by Revali's Gale - if you get a vertical boost, that adds a lot of sideways. Revali's Gale makes it easier to go up; the sideways wind lets you get in under overhangs. It's pretty much a wash.
@conanedogawa4798 Жыл бұрын
@@rmsgrey Like I said, you get the same thing from Hylian pinecones, thus if you are actually able to combine the up and the horizontal. Also, any overhang that Rivali's gale would have helped you reach can also be traversed even better with Ascend. Overall though, the SERIOUS case for the horizontal gusts is that the skyview towers launch you so high up that Rivali's Gale doesn't even have a prayer of even reaching 1/10 of the height, and you can use around 5 horizontal gusts while flying afterward before you run out of stamina (because that's what's going to happen well before you ever run out of down.) If you have 3 stamina wheels, this essentially gives you so much range that anywhere you couldn't reach from one tower can be reached from the next one over.

Random thoughts since I wasn't in livechat: Technically, Zelda is waiting for Link in the Temple of Time, just in a very timey-wimey manner. - One of my minor issues with Tears of the Kingdom is that farming spots have changed from BotW - for instance, you used to get fairies and utility plants at each Great Fairy Fountain - so I no longer know where to go to find specific things. - Something I discovered almost by accident is that you can grow a Brightbloom on a vehicle, so my first time through the Mining Cave on the Great Sky Island, my minecart had a headlight. And I used Ultrahand to carry it through the rest of the tunnel as a portable light source. - Speaking of brightbloom seeds, I throw mine by hand to save wear and tear on weapons/bows and keep the arrow budget down. You don't get quite the range, but I've yet to encounter a situation where you need to get light further than you can throw anyway. - I think Mipha's Grace is the Champion ability I miss most - just having that safety net was a huge help/comfort. Revali's Gale comes second for the sheer utility (though tactical Ascend covers a lot of the same situations and many new ones). - Speaking of Mipha, since she and Link nearly got engaged, Link and Sidon are quasi-family - if things had gone a little differently, and Mipha had her way, they'd be brothers-in-law. - Finally, I'd like to recommend Lil Gator Game for anyone who isn't aware of it - you play an anthropomorphic alligator kid who used to play a free-form LARP run by his big sister where he takes the role of the green hero (which they started because they couldn't afford the latest videogame) until she went to college. Now she's back, but busy with assignments, so our hero has a cunning plan to get her back into the game - by roping his friends into playing it with him in her vicinity until she's forced to join in. The game's pretty short - I've got 100% completion with a Steam total playtime just over 4 hours - but totally worth checking out. I believe it was also at SGDQ this year.

1:54:16 fun fact: I had a really awkward journey with my opinion on the story. SPOILERS FOR ALL OF TOTK: The first geoglyph I investigated after the tutorial with Impa was the Purah Pad-shaped one. That memory was the one where Zelda was like “so you actually believe my story about coming from the future by complete accident?” And Rauru’s like “I have power over light and my wife Sonia has power over time, but you, Zelda have both. Also secret stones don’t grant powers, they amplify existing ones.” And Mineru said “to become an immortal dragon is to lose oneself.” So I was like “OK, an immortal dragon is a fancy word for a person who has sacrificed their natural personality for immortality. Immortality being an immoral thing to want is a recurring theme across some fantasy media, like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. But Zelda’s not gonna do that, right? She’s gonna have a training montage and use her latent time powers to go back to the present!” But then the next memory I saw implied Zelda was considering becoming an immortal dragon. Oh no! Then another memory implied the opposite again! And I was relieved because Zelda had to deal with believing her power had dwindled during her stalemate with Calamity Ganon and she overall didn’t have a fun time throughout BotW. Then I awakened Mineru as a Sage (before Sidon and Yunobo, which is hilarious) and the flashback showed Zelda deciding to become an immortal dragon. And I was upset. I was upset because I led myself to believe Nintendo had given her a date worse than death: effectively becoming a different person. What’s worse, I had evidence for this conclusion. I wasn’t yet at the point where I could determine whether it was Zelda or Imposter Zelda who was responsible for siccing monsters on randos and causing various kerfuffles at the stables, or a combination of both. Eventually, I got the final geoglyph from Talus Plateau and the Light Dragon showed up and was like, “Hey! Go to Rist Peninsula!” And I was like “Is that a Mighty Zonaite Sword on your forehead?” Then I watched the final Dragon Tear cutscene and the reveal genuinely surprised me because I completely misinterpreted what Mineru meant by “immortal dragon.” I LOLed. But then I got mad at Nintendo not for making Zelda sacrifice her natural personality (which was a profound relief), but for making her return to the present the long way round. She’s the Sage of Time. The entire plot revolves around her time traveling backwards for more than 10,000 years BY ACCIDENT. So why couldn’t she return to the present the same way? It took me summarizing my journey to my brother for him to point out that Zelda only became an immortal dragon in order to fix the Master Sword. Then, finally, the plot made sense to me and I was ready to do Yunobo’s quest and enjoy the final boss.

My theory for how Link keeps getting resurrected when he dies (even before he gets the recall rune) is that Sonia's ghost is just following him around hiding behind trees and zapping him backwards whenever he fucks up too badly. Seems like something she'd do for Zelda :) (Also ties in a bit with how Zelda got un-dragoned when she wasn't aware enough to activate her own powers. I think Sonia's ghost jumpstarted the process)

Indigo, in the off chance that you're reading comments on a 4 day old stream and still don't have your AC unit: I highly recommend the combination of open window and fan pushing air out said window. I don't fully understand the physics of this (I think it has to do with the resulting lower pressure inside pulling air in through the tiny flaws in the wall, using the wall space as a buffer space for the air to cool down ever so slightly), but it really does work. (I was a night shift clerk at a hotel hosting the performers for a big local music festival, there was a mix up where someone who required AC (whether it was for legitimate medical reasons or for being a grumpy musician, I don't know, but he had actually paid for an AC room and wasn't registered for one). Thing is, my shift *started* at 11pm, he was in the last group arriving at something like 3am, all the other rooms were full of performers who were sleeping before an all day event tomorrow and the minimum wage clerk is not the guy with the authority to sort that kind of thing out, especially since at that moment it would require physically ousting whoever had gotten the free upgrade from their bed and...yeah, way above my $9/hr paygrade. I gave him this tip about the fan and promised I'd make sure my manager knew about the mistake first thing in the morning. He was, to put it lightly, rather miffed, but in the morning he made a point to drop into the lobby before I got off work (meaning the poor guy had like 3 hours of sleep before having to perform, yikes) to thank me for the fan trick, as it had worked well, and even apologized for giving me grief about the AC. So yeah, it works pretty solidly. It's not AC, but it works well enough. (And yes, the guy did get his AC room the next night).)

I'd like to add a suggestion: what about an air circulator? it works quite nicely and I tend to put an ice pack or even a damp towel behind it to blow cooled air around the room. Moving air always feels cooler. If you wanna spend more money, there's always the evaporative cooler aka "swamp cooler".
@rashkavar Жыл бұрын
@@DDlambchop43 Last I'd heard, Indigo's in New England, which is rather famous for its humidity. Evaporative coolers (and the damp towel trick, which is the same mechanism done informally) tend to work best in low humidity environments, so that might not be as viable there as it is in drier climates. That said, it is worth trying at least the damp towel. (Fortunately air conditioners are good even in high humidity, as they also reduce the humidity of a space. That's actually what they got their name for - improving air quality by reducing humidity. The cooling effect was apparently just a side effect.)

17:32 In fairness, that’s entirely his brand because of his choice in hair highlights. 1:28:26 Also, it _just now_ occurs to me that this is why there’s both armor sets for resisting elements, armor sets that deal bonus damage in those elements, _and_ cookable foods that do the same job. If you prefer having your full set of anti-cold armor, you can buff your cold damage via food, and vice versa, with the only reason to double dip in resistances being _not_ wearing the full set. unasked for but in case it becomes relevant, 2:02:02 Certain sets help not take effect damage when closing in on dragons (with very direct correlations), _but_ that does require the full set, and upgrading it like twice for the ‘advanced’ effect, and wearing that set at the time. Otherwise, normal armor works fine as long as you don’t get hit by their AOE effects.
