My dead son Austin was a huge RHCP fan because of me and I am regretful that Austin couldn't get to hear this song in tribute to Eddie and this new RHCP album. He missed it by 2 months damnit. Lovely tribute and I hope Austin can hear it from up there....We had plans to go see them on this new tour and life had different plans. RIP Austin and Eddie.

"Doing that solo was a mind fuck, I'll tell you that. And it was the last solo I did out of all the 48 songs we recorded. I saved it for last, because the idea of having a song about Eddie Van Halen, you're basically saying to people, "Think about Eddie Van Halen." And then when it comes to this long guitar solo at the end, you're going "Now watch this!" And I did not like that idea. I was even thinking of cutting the solo entirely, because I did not know how to go about it. I was trying for a while, and I wasn't happy with anything I was doing. I was either going too far in the Eddie Van Halen direction, to where it was too busy and there was too much two-handed tapping and it didn't sound like me, or I was just doing it and it only sounded like me... in a song about Eddie Van Halen. I just turned off my mind and stopped thinking about it. I stopped being self-conscious about the idea that the song was about Eddie Van Halen and just did what was natural. We were recording, and I took maybe a 15-minute break. And when I came back in, I just did the whole thing in one take. Whatever Eddie Van Halen is in there, it's just there because of my love for his playing since I was eight years old." John Frusciante - Guitar Player Holiday 2022 Issue

Okay. I'm 72. I was at the Rolling Stone's 1st ever American show in '64 (Swing Auditorium...) and have been a life-long rock music lover. Until... '94? New fangled, grungy stuff? Passed me by. I just kept listening to the same old stuff, like old people do. Leslie West, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck. But the short clips on the internet surprised me with Flea's speech at the RR Hall of Fame and that led me to two weeks of deep immersion of this fantastic band. Allen Thicke show up to today. That's too much back story. Sorry. The soaring whirl Mr. Frusciante takes us on here is as wonderful as anything I've heard in these SIXTY YEARS of living in the music.

If you followed what happened the last time John came back he only got better and more technical after time. I really believe he's locking in right now and we are going to see some life changing music in the next several years from them. This song is SO, SO good. Edited:Spelling

Such cool guitar techniques going on here. Ive been hearing fusion guys do stuff like this for years but not in a particularly accessible context. (Ex. Bending strings before activating them and then lowering the pitch) Frusciantes really good at taking that stuff and handing it down so everyone can enjoy it. What a killer riff and an absolutely devastating solo. Flea does the same stuff, by the way. He takes jazz that is complicated in every way it could be and he distills it to small enough portions it can be in the radio and instantly be recognizable. Its pretty clear that lately Kiedis is saying the first thing that comes to mind and owning it - that's the opposite of contrived lyrics. Its not all that different from someone like bob dylan. They've covered one of his songs before and if you didnt know it you'd think they were any old kiedis lyrics. All of these guys are top of their game. Smith got to do an AVH fill at the end. I saw them live this year and you really need to hear chad play with them live to understand how great of a drummer he is. These drum tracks are to drill the rhythm into our heads, but his live playing on literally every song is like a constantly changing solo that exerts unrelenting pressure. Also the video reminded me of listening to their music decades ago with computer generated visualisers. That was a serious hit of nostalgia. Aura t09 makes a lot of creative choices that hit just right. Shes tuned into what works. Last point, its good to hear frusciante playing with stereo imaging for his solos because thats just as much giving dimension to the sound as any other factor in his playing. Hes also doing super cool octave displaced pedal tone stuff thats super prominent on his style of playing from when he wasnt in the band. Great to hear that imported as well.

@@BeyondTigerMilk you're right, they have existed elsewhere. My point is they're very common in less popular instrumental genres like fusion and less common in others.

The mix and tone for this song is soo crisp. This is the cleanest track I've ever heard from them. They really captured the live sound here. It sounds very honest and true to who they are right now.

The best song the chilis have done in a long time imho. It has everything, a catchy hook, harmonious guitars and that bass line, um! John's beautiful backing vocals and unbelievable guitar solo holding it altogether with chads "otherside" like drums - very Californicationesque - excellent!

Back in 2010 when I first heard the Empyrean, I wished that one day I'd hear that John play with the RHCP; but I was not hoping as it seemed impossible at the time. It's crazy that even though I'm not following RHCP anymore, I'm what you'd call a boring adult with a job and two kids, nobody special, I feel that a loop has closed across time and I am weirdly satisfied even though this is not done for me or impacting me in any direct way. I guess I want to just say thank you John and RHCP for making this. It got recommended out of the blue and it's all I dreamed back in 2010 the perfect RHCP song would ever be like. Thank you!
