Sonic 1's error handler allows you to continue past errors by pressing C Sonic 2 and 3 has a very basic error handler that is just a couple of nops in a loop, and S3K has the same thing minus the loop, causing it to reset the game due to the position of the error handler in the cartridge (being right before the actual entrypoint)

The mid to late 2000s...Heck, I'd say the ENTIRETY! Great time for Sonic ROM hacks and fangames alike. From well known to incredibly oscure games, I'd say that this was an active and *immensely* influential period in the Sonic fan community, for both the community and the future of official games. Cheers to 15 years of Sonic Megamix!
@Oysterblade845 жыл бұрын
I agree, 2005 to about 2011 was probably the most exciting time for Sonic rom hacks, even though that period had more buggy Sonic hacks, it was truly an innovative time, watching all the videos on KZbin of Sonic hacks back then when most of us couldn't even play them beyond emulators. It seems after 2011, more and more Sonic hacks came out unfinished but less buggy, now hardly anyone puts in a decent effort beyond Green Hill and the Sonic hacking contests yearly don't really help as they only promote the hacker to just quickly change the first level and bugger the rest of the game.
@athing185 жыл бұрын
Adrian Gauna The 2000s to the early 2010s was surely an interesting period for Sonic fan games and hacks. From 2004/2005-2011, I'd follow countless fan games and hacks, some of which were finished or mostly done (including Sonic Megamix), most of which were unfinished, forgotten, and/or no one knows what happened to the creators. I remember the period where Multimedia Fusion was a fresh way to create Sonic games, when Sonic Robo Blast 2 was in its 1.09 stages, when the BlitzSonic engine was the next hot way of creating Sonic games from around 2007-2010. The community has grown, blossomed like never before. To this day I still hold on to the memories of unfinished fan games and hacks, hoping they somehow see the light of day, although we approach a new decade.
@athing185 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if anyone find this relevant, though I'd like to post about some fangames and hacks from the period that have and haven't survived. The purpose of this comment is to serve as a retrospect of the legacy of fan games. If you're not interested in a small history lesson, my apologies, you don't have to read it. Thouh I do find these mildly interesting.🤗 One of them, Sonic XG, which began around 2005-2006, went silent after 2007, though it resurged around 2012-2014 with video updates. You'd think after waiting 5 years for an update on the project it's good. After a second 5 year break, I'm sure it's left unfinished. Sonic GL, at kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2m2pnaQptppsLs seemed a really ambitious 3D project when I first found the video in 2006. It does show a bit of age, but imagine seeing this in the mid-2000s compared to a lot of other fan games at the time. "Sonic the Hedgehog 3D", a fangame that began development in around 2006-2007, was in part inspired by Sonic Robo Blast 2 (SRB2). While SRB2 was based on the Doom Legacy engine, Sonic the Hedgehog 3D is based on eduke32. Like SRB2 during that period, many elements from the original game engine remain. Sonic 3D was last updated just about seven years ago. Meanwhile, SRB2 has grown, and received an overhaul update on December 7th. Sonic Zero: Remastered began as Sonic Zero in 2001 and was cancelled in 2012. Some assets from the game were eventually handed over to other projects, including Sonic: Time Twisted. Ashura Dark Reign began development in 2005 as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. The last release was almost 10 years ago, and in early 2016 the project was moved to UDK/UE3. Since then, there has been no updates. Finished or still surviving: Sonic Axiom was in development for a few years and released in 2011. Sonic: Time Twisted began development in 2005 and after receiving a major overhaul finally released in 2017. Sonic Classic began development from sometime in the mid-2000s(?) and released in 2011. It received revisions in 2012-2013 and 2016. In 2011, a sequel titled Sonic Classic 2 began development, which got a video update just a week ago. The release is set for Summer 2020.

@@athing18 I agree with you. I remember when Markey Jester who back then was known only as Dr.X Insanity discovered ''split disassembly'' in ASM editing and then he gave us our first look into more innovative and complicated ways of creating Sonic hacks. I wish someone would fix Sonic 1 The Blue Blur by Scwha as it was a harder, more challenging Sonic 1 rom hack with a beautiful colour palette, sadly it crashes at the beginning of ''Gimmick Egg Zone' Act 1' and no amount of mashing the C button will get you out of it. I agree the community has matured and blossomed but has also become more lazy in finishing rom hacks than in the early to mid 2000's.

I really like Megamix, but the romhack I actually had the most fun with was Amy Rose in Sonic 1. It's really simple, I know, but Amy fits the more deliberate pacing of Sonic 1 better than Sonic does, and the hammer jump is really nice in a lot of the more vertical areas of Sonic 1 such as parts of Marble, Labyrinth, Spring Yard, and Star Light zones...though her lower speed is a bit of a pain in some parts of Scrap Brain. In any case...I totally get why Megamix is considered to be the king of the hacks for most people.

This is a terrific video! Finally someone's paying attention to bugs and glitches on real hardware aside from me. May I add that with Sonic Megamix 4.0 on the Mega-CD playing as Knuckles only, the game resets itself as soon as you fall down the first marble pit in Dark Fortress Zone Act 1, the game is fully playable with all the other characters just not Knuckles, and when using original mode the game resets itself after completing the first Special Stage with Tails only. Also always activate the debug mode on the title screen for a clean escape from the dreaded Special Stage ''stuck in block'' glitch which sometimes doesn't allow your character to break free after so many jumps. When this happens and you can't get out of it, pause the game, press A and you'll warp straight out to the normal level, it will result in a missed chaos emerald Special Stage try but it's worth it. If you don't activate debug mode and you get stuck in a Special Stage block, it's time to reset your game and accept a wasted days opportunity. My advice is to stick with the beta first release1.0, 3.0 on the Mega Drive and 4.0 on the Mega-CD, the other ones are too glitchy to play on real hardware.
@Oysterblade845 жыл бұрын
Just my opinion: Sonic The Lost Worlds by ExecByte is the best rom hack that ever came out, i'll explain why: 1. It is the only rom hack ever made that actually looks like an entirely new game and not just recycled garbage from the official Sonic games which usually consisted of a different colour palette, same layouts and different music usually changed for the worsed. 2. The level design is very good, it's designed in such a way that you have to actually slow down and think before you decide to move. Not all Sonic games have levels where you're constantly holding down the right button without a care in the world. There is alot of careful platforming required in this game. 3. The zones are all new (except Casino Night Zone) giving the player a brand new experience, every other Sonic hack just reuses Green Hill and Emerald Hill's art over and over poorly creating the illusion of being a new entirely different game when it's not. This one is. 4. They kept Sonic 2's music in the game with some remixed tracks originally from the beta releases instead of getting someone who knows little to nothing about programming SMPS engine music and creating stuff that sounds like arse. 5. Super Sonic is still present when containing all 7 Emeralds. 6. The rom is optimised in audio for PAL 50Hz Mega Drive systems. 7. It's an actual finished rom unlike most of the other 700+ Sonic rom hacks that are presented at the Sonic hacking contest every year these days.

It’s such a shame this never got finished, 4.0b and especially the leaked 5.0 look incredible and I wish this was finished or at least improved to be less buggy. Unfortunately this seems very unlikely these days, because the team is long separated and IIRC one of the developers even got arrested. I wish the Mega CD was used for more romhacks like this, if I had any skills I’d love to make something like this for myself but I suck at drawing pixelart and I don’t know where I’d get an engine to work with, and I doubt I could learn to rom hack real Mega CD code.

Lots of memories in these early builds. Fun video; thanks for making it! I suppose it goes without saying that at the time of a lot of these early builds, getting things to work on hardware as opposed to just *work* wasn't the biggest priority, initially. When things moved over to the Mega CD testing on hardware was a lot easier (Stealth has always been extremely meticulous), but I believe that by 3.0 a lot of the big coding no-nos as far as hardware compatibility were mostly worked out by everyone on the team. Shoutout to the even and align commands. :'D Glad to see people still enjoy Megamix after all these years!

Well, of course version 3.0 would be the most stable. It was also the version that was _pirated_ the most. Hell, I even have a bootleg Russian cart myself that I play from time to time to remind me how... not very good this hack was. Yeah, this hack aged poorly, in my opinion. There are so many hacks out there that have more than surpassed Megamix in terms of quality. I think it was definitely great for its time, though. I had never even seen the earliest builds before either, so this was neat to watch! Also, iirc, the creators' servers were hit with a DDoS attack a long time ago (which is also how one of the unstable Sega CD builds got leaked), so I don't think this is going to be finished or worked on anytime soon.
@HamtaroSonicHedgehog5 жыл бұрын
Actually that DDoS attack thing never stopped them from developing the hack, it's just unfortunately the team eventually split so now it's just stealth. Line 1111 Emulator (the developers of this hack played with the names of the errors in the Sonic 1 exception handler) is a 68k exception related to handling of opcodes with 1111 (0xF) as the top nibble. Line 1010 Emulator is identical, except it is for 1010 (0xA) instructions. These opcodes were left undefined in the original 68000; programmers could define their own functions for these codes in software, and the 68000 would trap these opcodes and execute them with a software handler (the titular emulator). If, however, an 1111 or 1010 instruction is encountered that is undefined in the current running program, the processor will raise one of the above exceptions. A handful of Mega Drive/Genesis games did apparently define their own custom 1111 and/or 1010 opcodes, but most, including Sonic 1, did not.

The reason for the C button progressing the game is that if the game detects an error. It says an error code (STFU being there since in the 2006 build the codes were modified). The C button is programmed to attempt to skip the error. This usually works really good, many times only corrupting the life counter. Other times if just crashes the whole game

I’m not sure if you’ve been made aware. But there’s been a release of a Sonic Megamix Version 3.5 (which is essentially 4.0 for the Genesis) So I was wondering that would work on real hardware. I would say most likely due to 3.0 being stable as well.

I doubt it, it doesn't even work on certain emulators lol

Well, I know Version 3.0 works on real hardware. I've seen a video of someone testing Sonic Megamix 3.0 on an AtGames Sega Genesis handheld console, and it works.
