I served in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, I spent most of that time working on the F-14 Tomcat, the Goose death scene pays tribute to an actual event early in the F-14 program, what you saw actually happened when a test crew got into a flat spin, and during the ejection, because the absence of air flow moving from forward to aft, the canopy hovered over the plane, when the ejection seats left the plane at 400 feet per second and impacted the canopy killing them both, after that loss, Grumman, (the company that built the F-14's) designed a new canopy which redone the explosives that shears the locks and added rocket motors in the canopy rails to throw the canopy away from the plane after one of the ejection handles are pulled, the "FLAT SPIN" is something that exists in all of aviation, but with the F-14, it is something that very serious, because the ease where the air frame can enter a flat spin, and the speed where the horizontal rotations can accelerate is very bad, it is a condition that is aggravated significantly due to the engines being separated from each other by more than 10 feet, unequal thrust is primarily what causes such a condition in the F-14.

Also, during filming of that scene, the stunt pilot that was hired to put his plane into a flat spin for video of what it would look like from the point of view of the crew, actually crashed and died. He couldn't recover from the inverted flat spin. The footage wasn't used.

Air Force mechanic here (mostly F-16s and F-18s) , the men and women who taught me maintenance had a lot of horror stories about the F-14 and why they didn't trust it. I personally never worked on one (they were retired when I joined), but from what they told me jet wash and flat spins were very common on those planes

Jet fighter junkie here. 🙋🏻‍♀️I can’t really tell you how much I’ve loved this movie throughout the years. I highly recommend Top Gun Maverick. As a sequel 35 years later, it can not be beat. Ice was top of the class, he won the trophy for top of the class. Maverick was always a close second because of the fact that he couldn’t follow rules. Thankfully, at the end he learned what he need to learn.

You cannot begin to understand just how huge this movie was. This movie was IMO the greatest movie to come out of the 80s pop-culture. AND vaulted Tom's movie stardom. When I saw this in the theatres, there were recruiters at the exit doors handing out brochures for joining the military. This movie no doubt inspired so many young Americans with patriotism. Glad you two finally got around to watching this one!!! A legendary classic!!! I'll take good wholesome make you proud to be American over the woke bs movies made today any day of the week. Also - the sequel also is absolute fire and avoided all the woke pitfalls that many movies disappoint with these days.

The Defense Department launched an investigation into this film after seeing the dogfight scenes. I thought this was just an "Urban Legend", but its actually true. The Navy had given permission for them to film 2 aerial battle scenes, and they thought the producers had somehow filmed multiple dogfights. But, what they did was film the 2 flying scenes from multiple angles and then edited the footage together to make it look like different battles and maneuvers. Their investigation found no wrongdoing. The elevator scene was filmed about a month after shooting had wrapped up on Top Gun. Charlie (Kelly Mcgillis) is wearing a baseball cap because her hair was longer and a different color as she had already started working on another movie. Same with Maverick, his hair is longer than at any other time in the movie in that scene, and he had also started working on a different project. They made it less noticeable by wetting it.

Top Gun has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the theater when I was 10 and I never thought in a million years, that any movie could replace it. From the first note of the Top Gun Anthem at the opening of Top Gun Maverick, I was crying because I have waited 36 years for it and it absolutely blew me away & became my new favorite movie. It's by far the best movie made in years as far as story, acting, actual stunts & videography. TG Maverick will literally take your breathe away with the aerial shots but you have to see it in either IMAX or DBOX...

1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a little-known movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation. 8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson(RIP), Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. You will be the first. 13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing. The best part is that it has a plot.👌

I was a Navy brat growing up, and lived on various Navy and Marine bases. The Navy and Marines are related. We lived in Hawaii when I was a teenager and I went to school off base. I had many friends who wanted to come over and see the jets flying around. Some enjoyed it, while others were terrified. I guess they didnt realize how loud and low the planes would be. Military kids have a different childhood. Not better or worse, just different. In the movie Full Metal Jacket, Sgt Hartman tells the recruits that every Marine is your brother. That also applies to military kids. There is a bond that you cant put into words. Plus, I was a world traveler by the time I graduated high school. I wouldn't change my childhood for anything. But some military kids had a hard time coping: friends, school, not knowing where pops is half the time. The children are not kept informed of things. They dont say "your dad is about to jump out a perfectly good airplane over hostile territory to rescue strangers". All you know is he's due back in a few months.

At the time of this movie, the F-14s still had problems with under-powered engines. If I recall correctly, they just mounted two of the engines that would've normally gone on an F-4 (which is smaller and lighter than the F-14). The F-14 was later refitted with better, more powerful engines.

The scene where Goose dies was based on a real event with an F14. The Navy learned after the real event that in a flat spin situation when the canopy is Jettison, it can get caught in a zero pressure directly above the falling aircraft and hang there for too long which can lead to the rear seater impacting it when he ejects. The new system was developed that would jettison the canopy and then wait a half a second before the rear seater ejects in order to ensure that the canopy was clear before he departs the aircraft

An F-14 Tomcat, which is what the Americans were flying in this movie, could top 1,550 mph, or nearly 26 (25.8333) miles/minute (or almost 1/2 mile/second), so in 30 seconds from when he said it, he could travel roughly 13 miles. That would mean, to answer your question, a little over 4 minutes to go 100 miles. Now, Maverick downed 3 planes in the end battle, but if he downed just 2 more, he would be an Ace.

The crash is based on a real life event. The original F-14s had an issue with flame outs on airflow disruption and since the canopy ejection relied upon airflow to pull it away, being in a spin negated this and so the an officer hit it on ejection. Later models had these flaws fixed. This movie was a boon to navy recruitment.

Just so you know, that "hit the brakes and let them fly by" maneuver is pure fiction. A move like that would just make you an easier target since you lose speed when you pull up. Also, the sound the 20mm cannon makes when firing is completely wrong. The real life sound is more of a weird buzzing sound that movie audiences would either think is fake (irony at it's best!) or funny, so I can understand why they changed the sound effect for the movie. Despite the nitpicking, Top Gun is one of my favorite movies. :)

Training or the book only serves as a guideline or reference point but in the field or actual combat is where you do the damned thing because play time is over!!!

The star of this movie is our aircraft the F-14 Tomcat. I was in the Navy a long time, I’ve been through Top Gun. I got in the same year this movie came out 1986, I hadn’t seen it before I joined. Top Gun is a nickname for United States Navy Fighter Weapons School.

I’d be confident in saying there was a rise in applications to join the Navy in the late 80’s. I was in high school in Australia when this came out and personally knew a couple of people who set their minds on becoming a “Naval Aviator“ after this came out. It had a huge cultural impact. Teenage boys all over the place wanted to be Maverick

Navy recruiters set up in theater lobbies to sign up the next Top Gun. I was just a year too young to be pulled in, and a lot of those enlistment contracts were probably walked back. Jrs not impossible to enlist abd become a naval aviator but you have to work fast and work your butt off to make it happen.

Great job on my all-time favorite movie. Came out when I was 12 and in San Diego last year, found multiple filming locations to visit, including "Viper's house". In that scene, if you remember, Viper said telling Maverick the details about his dad could cost him his job. That's because the fighting that ended in Maverick's dad's death occurred across the border of Viet Nam. By the rules of war, we were not allowed to conduct military maneuvers in Viet Nam outside of the country. On the contrary, the Viet Cong were doing that to our disadvantage. So, the reason that Viper, nor anyone else, was allowed to report on the older Mitchell's death was because it occurred while fighting was happening where we technically weren't supposed to be. Classify it so no one can find out. I hope that helps understand those details more. I love your channel!

The "MiG's" in this film are actually played by either T-38s. The T-38 was a trainer that first flew in 1959. It is amazing that even today it still looks futuristic. The F-5 was developed from the T-38 as a low cost light fighter made for export by the United States to other countries to supplement their Air Forces.

You missed the twist, the name of the movie refers to the top gun School. Even though he did not win the top gun trophy. The movie wasn't named for the best pilot. It was named after the top gun fighter school at Miramar where all the best pilots train.

I think that instead of "tough love" what Maverick really needed was some time and sage advice, which he got from Viper. But Viper also gave him the closure he needed on his father, even violating the law to do it. There's the real love story of this movie. Viper even offered to fly with Maverick if there wasn't a RIO available (but of course there was Merlin, who had previously flown with Cougar).

If Iceman were 160 miles out, then it would have taken Maverick about 8 minutes to reach them at Mach 1.8 (he said he was supersonic), which would be on the high side (I mean the speed). With multiple bogeys approaching, they should have launched the alert fighter (Maverick) sooner, and gotten more fighters on the catapults, which were "conveniently" all broken, of course (really, all three?!).

At the end when Maverick said he would be there in 30 seconds, he first said he was "supersonic" which means he was going faster than the speed of sound. The speed of sound is approx 5 miles per second. So 30 seconds would mean he travelled about 150 miles.

Woah lol!! You are way off my friend! - Supersonic at sea level is 343.2 m/s or 768 mph. So in 30 seconds, he would’ve only traveled about 6.4 miles. 😎👍🏼
