Grandpa Gustufsun was played by Burgess Meredith, who had a very long career in the theater and cinema, though most people would probably recognize him from his portrayal of Micky in Rocky.

This movie holds a very special place in my heart. When I was a little boy in 1994 I was visiting relatives for Christmas. Somebody rented 'Grumpy Old Men' on VHS. Four generations of my family sat and watched this movie and laughed. Everything from 80+ to 10 years old were sitting around the TV at Christmas laughing together. It is one of my fondest memories of Christmas from childhood. Any movie that can bridge that massive gap in generations and bring people together in laughter is something very special. I'm glad y'all liked it so much.

One of the rare films I think you should watch the sequel. It feels like one long story about these 2 guys, but the sequel we see more things tied together. Plus, it adds Sophia Loren to the cast. Also, Burgess Meredith is pure gold and steals every scene he's in.

@Asia and BJ what your watching is two of the top 100 actors of all time in Lemon and Matthau. Amazing flick and a FU to the Hollywood machine that never makes alot of content for the 40 and older crowd. They still are amazing with unreal chemistry was a treat to see you both come to love this. Watch the sequel it is one of the rare times the sequel is better then this original.

Lemmon and Matthew had great chemistry! You should check out their pairing in The Odd Couple. Both kicked out by their wives they take an apartment together. But Felix Unger (Lemmon) is a hypochondriac neat freak and Oscar Madison (Matthau) is a gruff sports writer slob. It was later made into a pretty good TV series with different actors, but the movie is the best!

Matthau and Lemmon was a movie power couple. They are just perfect together. My personal favorite of theirs, and the best comedy I ever saw is "The Odd Couple". Absolutely genius movie.

Burgess Meredith was nominated for 2 but never won. He won Emmys and a Tony award a long with winning the first Saturn Award.

Everybody knows Burgess Meredith was in Rocky, but he's also been a fan favorite of comic book nerds for being the first screen actor to play Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin, in the Batman TV series more than two decades before Danny DeVito made him a little monster. Even before that, he was Henry Bemis, the sad bookworm in one of the most famous episodes of Twilight Zone. He's a versatile actor who has been in everything forever, comedies, drama, westerns, war films, everything.

My dad took me to the theaters to see this when it came out and the whole room was falling out on the floor. My dad was a big time fisherman too, so a lot of the fishing jokes really hit him hard. We went back every Saturday and watched it again for like a month straight! It was an instant classic. You should also watch Grumpier Old Men also, great sequel and I'd say just as funny as the first one! And it was actually good as far as sequels go, followed right after the first movie and tied up a LOT of loose ends. DEFINITELY worth a watch!!!

Both Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon have made other movies together like The Odd Couple, Fortune Cookie, The Front Page, Buddy, Buddy, Out to Sea & The Odd Couple 2. They were also in JFK & The Grass Harp, but they weren't the main stars & in JFK they had seperate scenes. Please, PLEASE do the sequel Grumpier Old Men! It might not be in the same height as the 1st movie, but it's just as a great as well, funny as hell & it also has hilarious bloopers 😂😉🙂

The Odd Couple is one of their most famous pairings. My FAVORITE Matthau film is the comedy Hopscotch. He plays a veteran CIA agent who decides to burn his crappy boss by writing a tell-all book rather than be forcibly retired. Fab. And don't miss the fabulous Jack Lemmon in the memorable comedy Some Like it Hot with co-stars Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe.

The 5 main characters (played by Walter Matthieu, Jack Lemmon, Ann Margret, Burgess Meredith and Ossie Davis) all had/have STELLAR careers! Ann Margaret is the only still with us. Saw this when it was released in the theaters and it’s still great. Burgess Meredith was the highlight. You NEED to watch the sequel. The smiles on your faces were priceless watching this.

Elvis and Ann-Margaret were only in one movie together Viva Las Vegas. They had a steamy love affair during and for a while after. In addition the movie was one of Elvis’ best and the songs were excellent!! She was so sexy!!

Walter and Jack were close friends for most of their lives. Walter past away first and almost exactly a year later Jack followed. They are buried in the same graveyard near each other. They were in over 20 films together.

Check out Of Mice and Men (1939) With a very young Burgess Mereith aka Micky from the Rocky movies. The old frisky grandpa here too. The movie also stars Lon Chaney JR. He was also the star of The Wolfman (1941). Lon Cheney starred in a lot of the 1940's-50's Universal Monster movies. His father was the great silent character actor movie star Lon Chaney SR. He played in the original The Phantom of the Opera (1925). Chaney SR. was famous for doing all his on make up too.

How you guys not recognize Micky from Rocky? That's Burgess Meredith. He was also the Penguin on the Adam West Batman show. Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattheiu have been doing movies together since the 1968 movie The Odd Couple. Which is pretty damn hilarious. Its about two polarizing roommates, one is a neat freak, and the other is a slob.

People get grumpy when they are old because once, they used to be teens/20s and thought they knew everything and made all their own mistakes... then they grew up. But every single year there are new batches of idiots, year after year after year. After watching young people act like they know everything... for 20, 30 or 40 years, it gets REALLY annoying! No one ever learns from mistakes of others, they insist on making all themselves. Plus, you own things and have responsibilities, and KNOW things, but younger people have no respect for that. 😅😬😮‍💨😤😠

Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon made many movies together. The fortune cookie in 1966 I believe was the first. Then after that one that really put them on the map was the Odd Couple in 1968. Then they did a couple of Grumpy old men movies in 1993 & Grumpier old men in 1995 & I believe their final movie together was Out to Sea which was fantastic. Great comedy team together. Walter Matthau died 3 years later after the Out To Sea movie. Jack Lemmon died a year later.

Ok guys. If you think that was good. Now you have to watch Walter and Jack in their original duo, The Odd Couple (1968). A 5 season tv series was made with different actors after the movie.

This was great but the sequel *"Grumpier Old Men"* is better. New love intrest and it takes place right after they left off. Plus, it's the same great cast. I hope y'all watch it soon. It completes the Wonderful circle. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were both lifelong friends in real life too. They're actually buried close to each other and their wives in the same small cemetery in downtown LA. My grandparents were good friends with alot of Hollywood celebrities back in the day. My family and I spent a lot of time with Mr Matthew. He was a very nice Man.

This movie and the next one, Grumpier old men, filmed most of the exterior shots in and around my hometown of Annandale, Minnesota, around the time I graduated from high school. Our town motto was "The Haert of The Lakes" we had a lot of icehouse town for ice fishing. You can walk on the ice around 1 foot thick. And be able to drive on ice when it is 4 feet or more thick ice. But that's more around mid-January to the first week in March.

I have seen this movie a couple of times, and I have watched a couple of reaction videos to this movie. But there is nothing better than watching a movie with BJ and you too Asia, but BJ is my movie man. Lol God bless the both of you.

Ann Margaret had a party to celebrate Elvis' birthday as she usually did and after getting close to many making this film she invited them to the party. In Hollywood Reporter it was reported Matthau along with Lemmon reminisced about there Odd Couple experience that had everyone laughing.
