April 6, 2024: Referee Steve Kozari was injured in a center ice collision with Tampa's Haydn Fleury during Saturday's game between the Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The NHL says he was conscious and alert on the way to the hospital with the use of all his extremities, and that he is expected to recover fully. Happy to hear this good news.

Yep ... we've seen it happen with players. It was a big old collision.. Unavoidable ? Don't think so. Will it happen again ....probably. The problem you have with the neutral zone is when play is at either and as a player or ref your just floating you don't expect a face to face collision. Steve is going to have a serious concussion and his seasons probably over .... Fleury looks like he's going to be day to day with a LBI. ..... if that had happened back in the good old days it would have been far worse for both. Let's hope both make a full recovery..

Cool to see how quickly the pen's trainer rushes to help Kozari and how Crosby jumps of the bench to make sure the trainer doesn't fall as he runs to help

He gave his head a good crack on the ice and let's face it ... those helmets aren't made for that kind of contact. Could have been so much worse as he could have snapped his C Spine quite easily. Medical staff and EMS were just fantastic. And no one really wants to be there when that happens . It knocked me sick because I've was in a similar situation 4 yrs ago when I was hit by a motorbike while out cycling. I have zero memory of the day but plenty mental health issues since..

NHL, CHL and Canadian (not sure about US leagues) college officials all put themselves in this position in the middle of the ice near the center line in the fastest version of the sport with 14 people on the ice (not counting goalies here). Stay near the boards. Or at least off to one side or the other. But the referees (not the linespeople) are out there like it's Sunday afternoon public skate! If you're walking down the freeway eventually you're going to get trucked!

Why is an official at center ice? Aren't they supposed to stay along the boards as much as possible?

There were two official up ice..You would probably hsve to direct his movements to find out why he was there. But none of that's important right now. Imagine if their wives were watching ? Not good to see.

He kept his head turned in the opposite direction knowing Fleury was to his right, then skates right into him. Why wouldn't he go the other direction, and most importantly why wouldn't he even look where he was going if even for just a split second? It's literally human nature to look where we are going so it had to be intentional. Nothing was happening that two linesman couldn't see that made it necessary for Kozari to skate right into Fleury like that

I think hilariously ironic that you have a sport where it’s expected for players to fight each other but then shows concern about injured people. Just last week you had two entire teams just start beating the shit out of each other when the puck dropped, yet this everyone is so concerned for someone’s safety

Accidentally getting injured and fighting are different things. Plus no one hopes to cause spinal damage in a fight. Also refs are there to protect the players, so its pretty shitty when they get hurt.

@@Not_a_smart_man I notice you're new to hockey. That's not what happens at all. Both combatants understand perfectly what they're getting into. If one player is knocked out, the other combatant does not apologize or show remorse for his actions. They all understand The Code, unlike you.
