Reform, SDP & Reclaim: Who Are They? Are they a real alternative to the Tory & Labour parties?

Күн бұрын

From immigration to housing, education, the economy and free speech, what do Britain's smaller parties (Reform, SDP & Reclaim) have to offer the British people? Why do they exist and how do they differ from the Conservative & Labour parties? Do they offer a viable alternative for the future? Would they be more effective if they united? Or are there distinct differences between them?
In this panel session from the New Culture Forum's spring conference in Birmingham, we explore all aspects of Britain's smaller parties. The session is chaired by NCF Director Peter Whittle and features William Clouston, Leader of the SDP, and Ben Habib, advisor to the Reform Party and former Brexit Party MEP. Laurence Fox, Leader of the Reclaim Party, had to pull out at the last minute due to poor health.

Being accepting is a modern British value and one I'd like to see abolished. It's exactly why we are in such an unenviable position in the first place. The British Isles has a clear and distinct demographic, a blend of Celtic/Germanic/Viking and other European ancestries. Why should we be accepting to peoples from other, practically alien parts of the planet, with entirely differing cultures and creeds? Being accepting in this context means capitulating to a foreign entity, one which will inevitably phase us out should we allow it to proliferate.
@malpreece5008

There was a time when I may have disagreed with you, but you’re right. The nation has been ruined because we’ve been far too accepting, and we’ve refused to insist that people assimilate. We are a distinctive people and we should be far more selective with who is allowed to join us on our islands. That said, there are those who have assimilated and made our country their home. They’re our allies and we should work with them to preserve the things we love about our nation.

@@tiger6218 Sorry, I don’t understand. What’s the contradiction? I’m thinking about people like Raheem Kassam. He was born in England, but he’s from a Indian Muslim background. He abandoned Islam, and as far as I can tell he’s embraced English/British culture, which he’s promoted through his work. He recognises how nations are built around specific ethnicities, and how those ethnicities should remain a majority. In his book ‘Enoch Was Right’ he wrote: ‘I too believe that no government policy, no mismanagement, no reason whatsoever should lead the English, or Scottish, or Welsh, or Irish to find themselves in a minority in their own nations, ethnically. I would say the same for the Chinese, the Indians, the Pakistanis, the Spanish, the Greeks, the Hungarians, etc.’ He obviously acknowledges that even though he was born in England and has embraced English culture, he’s not ethnically English, and never will be. But he’s an ally of the English/British people, and has made his home in England. I really don’t have a problem with people like that. I do have a problem with any migrant that has moved to Britain and failed to assimilate, instead insisting that the host nation change to accommodate their culture. They don’t adopt English/British traditions, they actively demonise the host and revel in the fact that their ethnic groups are replacing the native population. I’m thinking about people like: Ash Sarkar, Dianne Abbot, David Lammy, and many more. As far as I’m concerned, they can all Foxtrot Oscar back to the country of their forebears!

The British don't have a generally good history with parties with 'national' in their title. With the exception of the SNP, none of them do well. Questions would be asked about Nationalism, which in the UK, is usually frowned upon. Perhaps something along the lines of the Conservative Reformist Party? It would also need to be reflected across all parts of the UK, so England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It's interesting to see the electoral pact that the SDP and reform has, although it's only 6 seats, it shows cooperation with a goal in mind. I fear that you are correct about Labour and Brexit though.

The main obstacles were: Reclaim-Fox wasn't willing just to hand over his big donations to Reform blindly and was concerned about Tice wanting Fox to tone down his provocative approach. Heritage-Just weren't interested, their members are paying his wage. SDP-Their members were reluctant because they have a more left-of-centre approach than Reform, plus they had 30 staff members, how could one party afford everyone else's staff members? Do you need 5 secretary's? UKIP-Offered to join Reform, they refused, my guess is that they also wanted jobs at Reform instead of just standing. Although, there was talk about Reclaim & UKIP merging, but that has since fizzled out when they worked out it's not quite as easy as it appears to be. Reform-They're polling high, not wanting to rebrand. They've been put off Jane's swipes at them. They're concerned about Fox's recklessness. They were happy to do an electoral pact with SDP.

Nigel used to be a one man band, now there's been an explosion of recognisable right-leaning commentariat ready to stand. If we can get Reform candidates in the UK Parliament to do what UKIP/Brexit Party did in the EU Parliament, people will start moving away from the Tory Party. If UKIP can get 2 MP's without GB News and TalkTV and with a one man band in Nigel, Reform can thrive. There's never been a better time for a breakthrough.

To anyone unsure about voting for the small parties - Reform, or another party does not need to win enough seats to actually form a majority government, not at first. To actually effect big changes, even just a few seats, even 2 to 5 is enough, and enough of the remaining candidates to lose a big enough vote share to smaller parties in individual seats. That alone would scare the living crap out of Lab/Con and they will start to make more policies to pander to those dissident votes. It worked that way before with UKIP in 2014, they got such a huge vote share that Cameron pissed his little panties and gave us the Brexit referendum. In 2024, that is all we need to do, 10 million votes country wide is enough, 2 seats (preferably more of course) is enough. From there others will see we can win and we can grow, but also force the Tories and Labour to reconsider their agendas. Yes, of course getting 300 seats would be amazing but you know the system isnt designed that way. It serves the big parties for now, and also many people will still be unconvinced it can work. So, we aim to win, but be happy with just a few smaller victories until we get a foothold. Regardless of if thats Reform, Reclaim, Heritage, SDP or whoever, just tick any box that isnt the big 2 and we can start to regain our country.

That question of "Why don't you all get together" keeps coming to mind.. There seems to be a broad synergy between them.. I don't however agree with the SDP and their plans for EV's. Anything with a battery will cause massive damage to the environment, a total non-starter for me. If the technology improves, then let's discuss it, but based on what we have now.., it's an awful policy, building a structure to charge these would also have a massive impact. Petrol and Diesel are still the best we have, and new innovations can clean them up better than ever, also consider that keeping existing vehicles on the road means fewer emissions than building new and starting all over again.

Political parties become subject to corruption and capture from external influences as they grow in size and influence. It’s leaders abandon core values, former supporters drift away and the party membership and vote share begins to disintegrate. The SNP is a case in point.

Although I am fully With Ben on this, their were some interesting points made by Richard However, one point I strongly disagree with Richard was when he said that no country has industrialized without being protectionist, which simply isn't true For example, Eastern Europe only properly industrialized when they opened up to the world as is the case with India, South Korea, Japan, Etc.. On the other hand, India was doing terribly bad up until they opened up to the world However, I do believe sometimes in using tariffs as retaliatory measures against countries who cheat us For example, I believe Trumps tariffs on China, France and some other countries were the right thing as those countries were taking America for granted

I can guarantee to Ben happy keep that when he goes knocking on doors in the upcoming by-elections, not a single person will raise the issue of the Northern Ireland protocol. What Brexiteers such as him don’t understand is that while Northern Ireland is indeed legally part of the United Kingdom, it is not psychologically part of it. Most English people do not regard it as part of their country, they regard it as abroad. English people do not feel any sense of solidarity with Northern Ireland Unionists. Indeed, English people tend to classify anyone born on the island of Ireland as Irish. Given that most people in Northern Ireland support the protocol and most people in England don’t give a monkeys about it, why make start a trade war with the EU about it (which is what’ll would happen)? Actually, I would go further than this. I think the attachment of parties like Reform and the SDP to the union with Scotland is mystifying and depressing. If you want genuine conservatism in England, a good first step would be to remove 59 non-Conservative MPs from the English Parliament. This could be done by legislating to reduce Scottish public spending to English levels, thereby eliminating the economic case for the union, and then giving Scotland a referendum!

Only vote for someone you actually agree with and support. Do not vote for the least worst candidate. Voting for the least worst candidate means you are not being given suitable choices, which is why Parliament is stuffed full of MPs with no connection to the electorate and who represent other oganisations such as the EU or the WEF. It is better not to vote at all if you cannot find a candidate you truly support.
