Actually theres less saturns and Cavaliers now on the road they are reliable but I'm guessing most got sent to the crusher when the whole cash for clunkers thing went down however in mexico you see way more of these cars and Cavaliers still roaming the streets more
@TheOzthewiz
@TheOzthewiz 4 жыл бұрын
@@lazyhumorstudios Speaking for the Cavalier, NOT TRUE. The Cav was NOT eligible for the "cash for clunkers", would get good gas mileage. What did the car in was notoriously flimsy body build. I owned an '01 for 17 years, VERY reliable and I was getting 32mpg @ steady 65mph, with the AC ON! I finally traded it in '18 because the body panels were reverting to their "natural state" (RUST)!
@yupitellwhut

@@TheOzthewiz oh I never knew that, but yeah that's good then, I feel most people abused the hell out of the Cavaliers and other people just ended up junking them. It's more common now to come across Cobalts now than it is to find Cavaliers.

Is anyone going to mention reliability? Aside from the 3800 and LS/350 these were one of GM's best. I have friends who have run these into the ground, having it run out of oil several times, and they just didn't die (its around 250K right now).

My 2002 SL2 was my first car. Poor thing treated me right even though I drove it like a race car every single day. And took such neglect, things I would never do to a vehicle now, and am so ashamed of having done. I ran that car dry on oil three times after forgetting to put the oil fill cap back on after changing it. It died, I added more oil, cranked it up, and kept driving. Heck of an engine.

Two years ago, I borrowed a Saturn SC2 for two weeks and was very surprised by it. My only gripe in those two weeks was that I thought the driver's seat was too hard on long drives. Otherwise, fuel economy: good, oil consumption: none, a/c: very good, heater: very good, acceleration: decent. I'm watching this video because I'm picking one up tomorrow. I wish I had bought the one I borrowed.

I bought one new in 1996 and last drove it a few minutes ago. It has 255k miles on the original engine and all cylinders still have like new compression. The 1996 SC2 was the last year it had a shorter wheelbase than the SL and SW. The S series Saturns: -Stainless steel exhaust -Timing CHAINS, not belts -Nonmetal body panels that dont corrode or warp, but can crack if hit hard enough in an impact. No parking dents. -The most amazingly awesome factory service manuals you will ever read. -Modular construction that makes it easy to service. (You can actually drop the entire engine and drivetrain on the front wheels out the bottom of the car. ) -Theft proof ( no one wants it ) 35mpg -Cheap parts widely available -Never die unless killed.

Say want you want about Saturn, my SL2 is like a fucking battleship, has never broken down, starts in any weather, takes around 15 to fill the tank, and is a quirky little GM car. Although the cab noise is awful at high speeds (plastic everything) , and everything rattles, like any 90s GM car. Perfect for a first car or a winter beater, and apparently pretty good at rally cross.

I drive a 1996 Saturn SL1 that came with two extra options above the most basic model (AC + carpeted floor mats). It's an amazing little car and dead reliable.... And all the major repairs it's needed have only been in the last two years. Usually I get mid to upper 30's on the highway and upper 20s in the city, but lately it hasn't been doing so hot [I blame some of the cold weather we've been having where I live]. But yeah, I love it.

I talked down on these before I got a chance to rebuild one, and what do you know, they actually have quality internals and basically setup like any other Japanese compact car....it's just the sheep fan boys of Japanese brands talking shit. I would build another sc2 if the opportunity came up again.... don't be scared to be different and on another note. The stock sc2 is faster than a stock Civic...it's proven...I love Honda but prefer to be different...fuck 🐑🐏🐑🐏 boys...bahhh!! Bahhh!!

Exactly man. I leave people off the line all the time in my SL2. I like how smooth and low the ride is. If anything happens to it oh well it's a $1,000 car. I've done a few repairs myself they were all very easy and if it becomes unrepairable I'll honestly scoop another one up. I've had hondas in the past and they're just theft magnets in my city.

I wouldnt recommend anything after 2002 so much. Thats when GM came in and destroyed the company. But even as the years pass.....if you need a cheap, reliable car.....there are still many out there. I just bought a 2002 sl1 a few years ago with 30k original miles. 1 owner carfax certified. Its all i need. And runs like new. Guess who wont need to buy a car for a long time? Thats the point. i work at a dealership that is currently a mitsubishi dealer and was a past saturn dealer. ive seen so many of these things roll through even though saturn is dead due to loyal customers its crazy lol. the elderly people literally hold onto their saturns until the day they die. we're losing good customers due to old age! at least 90% of these have body damage of some sort, rough idles, and worst of all reak of mothballs or soiled pants.

Jesus, I hope I never hit the kind of rock bottom that a 1997 Saturn SC2 is somehow an upgrade in my life.

In my opinion saturn is a very quality car. The reason why they die is because nobody checks the oil or transmission. They last over 400,000 miles! The plastic body even is in good shape. No dents, they were on to something. How many modern cars now don't follow that idea? A dent less body now that's cool. These cars don't get respected that much. Thier good on gas...Give these cars credit my gosh people. Yes I support saturn because I happen to drive a first gen sl1. lol

I own a 97 saturn SL2, the 4 door version on this car. Sure they may have been a joke when new, but so are civics and corollas, IDK why anybody would buy a car that will be worth 1/3 the sticker price in 2 years. Suckers, lmao. BUT, the used market is where its at for saturns. I bought mine for $450. Average price seems to be $8-900, real nice ones go for like $1100. Now go find me a 97 corolla/civic thats in decent shape for that price... you can't. They sit around 2-3k and even an '88 corolla will go for like $1200. Plus, they're not any more shite than the next POS made in the 90s. Mine is dead reliable with 178k miles on the clock and it runs like it has 20k. Parts cost next to nothing. Engine bay isnt cluttered/not hard to do your own maintenance. AND I average 32-25 mpg in the 4spd slushbox (with a lot of freeway driving/cruising at like 3.5k rpm)... I cant even imagine if I had the manual. If you're building a racecar in your garage and still need a daily for as cheap as possible, look no further than a 90s saturn.

+Thomas Lee Yup! I have a 96 SL1 that I parked with 220k on the ticker because some ass bag hit me head on, thing still runs, just use it for parts. I picked up another SL1 with the insurance money. Best beaters for your buck!

My old teacher had the wagon version with close to 400,000 miles on it. These things may have had cheap interiors but they were tanks with the manual transmission.

Saturns weren't very "refined," but they were consistently better than the competition in content and HP, and got excellent reviews for reliability from such sources as Consumer Reports, who were notoriously pro-Japanese in their bias in those days. They were very good cars for what they were.

the episodes where you make marching band references are just so great. Marching band just conjures such an incredibly specific yet undefinable set of emotions for me and I'm glad someone else knows roughly what its like.

A 1998 Saturn SC2 was my first car, averaging 38MPG (prior to ethanol crap additive) . Its alternator location was the only thing which was clearly designed by no one who would ever work on their own car. Funnies thing is that my SC2 was actually a special edition...yes...they made special edition Saturns. The special edition was called "red hot", gotta love the late 90s.

@richardharrold9736

invinciblejets Perhaps so, but Japanese engines tended to be short-stroke, wide-bore, high-revving engines with little torque. For American and European engines of the time, it was fairly standard. Alfa Romeo made a 1.6 twin-cam with 115bhp in the 1960s too, but that was very much the exception for the time. Tobias Weiß Saturn could only accommodate 4-cylinder engines in their FWD transverse-engine platforms. The 320i is a lovely straight six - either M52B20 (150bhp) or M54B22 (170bhp).

We have a '95 Sl2 that was somewhat of a racecar. It features a reinforced chassis and rollbars built into the doors coupled with a sport button. They pushed it to 114 on the interstate on the way home before backing off. We also have a '98 Sl2 which serves as the daily since the '95 was wrecked in 2019 and parts for these cars are so hard to come by.
