The 1996 SC2 was the last year it had a shorter wheelbase than the SL and SW. The S series Saturns: -Stainless steel exhaust -Timing CHAINS, not belts -Nonmetal body panels that dont corrode or warp, but can crack if hit hard enough in an impact. No parking dents. -The most amazingly awesome factory service manuals you will ever read. -Modular construction that makes it easy to service. (You can actually drop the entire engine and drivetrain on the front wheels out the bottom of the car. ) -Theft proof ( no one wants it ) 35mpg -Cheap parts widely available -Never die unless killed.

Usually I get mid to upper 30's on the highway and upper 20s in the city, but lately it hasn't been doing so hot [I blame some of the cold weather we've been having where I live]. I would build another sc2 if the opportunity came up again.... don't be scared to be different and on another note. Sure they may have been a joke when new, but so are civics and corollas, IDK why anybody would buy a car that will be worth 1/3 the sticker price in 2 years. Suckers, lmao. BUT, the used market is where its at for saturns. I bought mine for $450. Average price seems to be $8-900, real nice ones go for like $1100. Now go find me a 97 corolla/civic thats in decent shape for that price... you can't. They sit around 2-3k and even an '88 corolla will go for like $1200. Plus, they're not any more shite than the next POS made in the 90s. Mine is dead reliable with 178k miles on the clock and it runs like it has 20k. Parts cost next to nothing. Engine bay isnt cluttered/not hard to do your own maintenance. AND I average 32-25 mpg in the 4spd slushbox (with a lot of freeway driving/cruising at like 3.5k rpm)... I cant even imagine if I had the manual. If you're building a racecar in your garage and still need a daily for as cheap as possible, look no further than a 90s saturn.

My best friend had one of these. Not being very knowledgeable about cars he took a small road trip, the oil light came on, and he kept driving. Blew a hole in the side of the engine.

1.9 I4 with 115hp... That's just sad.
@richardharrold97368 жыл бұрын
+Tobias Weiß It was the standard for the time. The BMW E46 318i 1.9 made the same (albeit it was a SOHC 8-valve).

+Richard Harrold not really ..Toyota made a 1.6 with 115 hp in the 80s
@174wolf8 жыл бұрын
***** I'm aware of that, I drive an E46 320i myself. But BMW *offered* respectable engines with their car. Why didn't Saturn?
@richardharrold97368 жыл бұрын
invinciblejets Perhaps so, but Japanese engines tended to be short-stroke, wide-bore, high-revving engines with little torque. For American and European engines of the time, it was fairly standard. Alfa Romeo made a 1.6 twin-cam with 115bhp in the 1960s too, but that was very much the exception for the time. Tobias Weiß Saturn could only accommodate 4-cylinder engines in their FWD transverse-engine platforms. The 320i is a lovely straight six - either M52B20 (150bhp) or M54B22 (170bhp).

+Richard Harrold exactly my point Japan was ahead of the times engineering better engines...

We have a '95 Sl2 that was somewhat of a racecar. It features a reinforced chassis and rollbars built into the doors coupled with a sport button. They pushed it to 114 on the interstate on the way home before backing off. We also have a '98 Sl2 which serves as the daily since the '95 was wrecked in 2019 and parts for these cars are so hard to come by.
