The Volvo C303 was not only used in the Swedish military but also as a helper in fire departements in wild fires and as a mean for power companies to get to their power lines in the middle of the swedish forrests. Fun facts. It is a very narrow vehicle because something like the US Hummer or the like wouldn't fare well in the forrests here in Sweden where a c303 or the original, older brother, the pltbg 903, can use all the small paths and roads to greater effect.

Oh, and the engine is kind of like the same engine as you find in the Volvo 140 (or the Volvo P1800 if you're fancy), except with two more cylinders. I think you can find the same engine in the Volvo 164 wich is a beauty! :)

It's designed as a seriously dope offroader, and to be driven and maintained by 18-19yo conscripts fresh out of highschool and trade school. Thousands were made, production ended in the mid 1990ies and the same vehicles are still in general service with parts of the Swedish armed forces more than 40 years after the first ones rolled off the production line... Not because they are cheap, but because no more modern vehicle has so far met all the Armed forces requirements of a general purpose wheeled all terrain utility vehicle in a way that makes the c303, 304 & 306 family obsolete.

I have dealt with different types of break downs, but more so have had a great time with it. It does do GREAT offroad. But you gotta Love it, and by that I mean you gotta care for it because you won't see a "Check engine light" anywhere. They are as easy to work on as an aircooled VW, but all the parts are 4+ times as heavy. Then join the talk forums to befriend guys that can tell you where to get parts. Parting words, I am in the middle of a diesel / trans / transfer case swap. Only because I better power and mileage, plus the bonus of knowing where I can get replacement parts for those critical areas while out!

I drive an '88 Mitsubishi Van/Wagon, and it's interesting to see the similarities in the layout of the van and this. In my van the engine is under the center console, between the passenger and driver seats. To get to the engine the passenger and center console lift backwards. It is surprisingly quiet, aside from just general old car noises. You sit in front of the front axles on the Mitsubishi van, too. That mixed with the short wheelbase makes for a surprisingly small turning radius. That and parallel parking tends to be easier since you don't have really any front overhang. The brake reservoir on my van are also behind the dash, and there is a little piece that slides off to refill it. Your reactions to certain things are almost identical to my reactions when I first got it and started driving it. Aside from strong wind and steep hills, it's really enjoyable and easy to drive.

At least engine parts should be fairly easy to come by, it just appears to be the old straight six from the Volvo 260. Which if maintained are pretty bullet proof. Unlike the later PRV V6, as used in the 760 and Renault A310/610 and of course, the DeLorean. These were crap! Cool and unique vehicle though, kind of like the Land Rover 101, which were used by our Military, here in the UK.

@@kattn01 They had the same purpose but the older version vas narrower, lacked portal axles and the vacuum assisted axle locks, it had a limited slip axle in the rear and only the B30 four cylinder little brother, the B18 (some late models might have had the B20) The C303 has only one drumbrake on it's transmissions rear end as parkingbrake as when the engine is shut down, the vacuum goes away and locks all differentials. 100°C is when water boils in atmospheric sea level pressure. Having the system pressurized like with the cap for the radiator raises the boiling point some, also having glycol in the system might raise it a bit further, but passing 110° C is asking for trouble. As said, mounting some electric fan would be helpful. The original is on a shaft from the waterpump to reach near the radiator, so there should be plenty of room lengthwise, only the tunnel for the radiator is narrow and it can be hard to find a modern radiator with those specs. Alternativly put full heat in the rear heater for the passengers?

I own a Volvo L3314N which is the predecessor to this, my first car, and I absolutely love it, it's really nice to drive for what it is even at upwards of 100kph, as long as you're wearing hearing protection, it gets pretty loud. It's simpler than the c303 so a lot easier to work on and parts are very easy to get. I do love the c303 but I could never imagine owning one because the L3314 is borderline practical, it's no bigger than my mom's polo and is still an offroading beast. It has a Volvo b18 in it which is one of the most reliable engines ever made, one of them has powered a p1800 3 million miles and is still going. and it gets a respectable 15mpg, not great, but considering how it has chunky offroad tires and is a shaped like a rectangle with a 50 year old engine, it's really not bad. Doesn't have locking diffs like the c303, but it does have lsd in the back, which combined with being a mid-engined convertible makes it essentially a sportscar.

My previous car was a Land Rover XD-TUL Wolf, which is an uprated in eery single way Defender 90. Stronger axles, taller and stronger suspension, stronger chassis, roll cage, improved intake. Great vehicle, until, yes, you need to repair the bloody thing. The front face of my alternator decided to disintegrate, so I needed a new or reconditioned one. Now the alternator on a regular, civilian, Defender would go for around £150 at the time. But this thing was a 24v shielded and waterproof version, which went for £750. Even trying to find light bulbs was a pain in the naught. It cured me of wanting another military vehicle as a daily drive...

The predecessor was used by the Norwegian army. The L3314N version was assembled at the Raufoss ammo plant with Nato-spec upgrades to replace the many Jeeps delivered when the Army was rebuildt after the war. I’ve never driven one, but it is said to be a capable and agile off-roader. Also easy to modify for different tasks. Many of these cars are now in private ownership and the model is a popular just-for-fun hobby car. Also called Volvo "Valp"; "Puppy".

I was coming to say this, cause I really like the idea of Portals. I had the idea that one of the silly crossover 4cylinder vehicles like a new Cherokee or rav4 would be cool with tiny reduction portals and 33s, but it makes more sense to just start with something more truck like.

BainBoyd I’m not trying to be one of those people since you said it was just an idea and nothing more. But, something like a Rav 4 or a new Cherokee would be horrible for real off road use since they have no low range(I think) and articulation isn’t really present. Also, I just hope you know that the new Jeep cherokees use a Fiat 4cylinder, so don’t expect it to be reliable.

Having binge-watched what feels like three days worth of RCR, I'm struck by how every car seems to belong to some class of, well, if not terrible, at least loathsome individuals. And isn't that the truth that RCR reveals? That we are ALL loathsome in some way? We're all broken and ugly and we surround ourselves with totems to that effect. There's something egalitarian in knowing that the man or woman owned by their brand-new Ferrari is just as twisted and hideous and repulsive as the one owned by his 1996 Ford Aspire.
