Things I came into this video hoping to receive: -sweet C5 driving footage -dad jokes -jokes about dads buying corvettes -being called out as a 40 something owning one of these -the desire to throw out my New Balance sneakers Things I did NOT sign up for: -facing my own mortality -existential dread -realizing I can no longer see the faces of those that wronged me 20+ years ago Great video as always, fellas. I hope whoever wins this car loves the hell out of it.

As a GenX in the first half of a 40 year career, I caught glimpse of an all new 1997 C5 in my rearview while on a business trip. Always a bit of a Ferrari fan, I was astonished at the sight of the car that I began to pace for the next several miles. A car like that, let alone any Corvette, was out of my financial reach and this became what was the dream of someday. Well, someday came in the summer of 2013 as I drove home in my "new to me" 2001 torch red convertible Corvette. There I was, top down, rowing through the 6 speed gear box on Hwy 64 out of Franklin NC, tears in my eyes and a joy of life that driving the car still gives me today. My dad told me a similar story that happened to him on some back road in Texas in our 1968 GTO, I was with him that day and, as a kid, I really didn't realize what that day meant to him....wish he could have been there with me on my "someday".

That final bit about time reminded me of my favorite Captain Picard quote. "Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives, but I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment, because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived. After all, Number One, we're only mortal."

Dude I stood up and applauded at the end, screaming "Bravo!" My wife thought I was nuts. Well more nuts than usual because at almost 50, this is all I think about now. This business about time, and the sequence of moments, the losses, the gains, and the changes. The first heartbreak, end of the band, the first marriage and its end, the first death of a friend, the first CAT scan, the first signs of slowing and infirmity knocking at the door, the patterns repeating themselves through the generations, and the utter, dark senselessness of it all. So after 20 years of lusting after one I bought a used Civic Si. Not because it would make me feel 'young'(I'm not nearly naive enough to think that). But to try to outrun the nihilism. To try to get out in front of it. Instead of feeling like I'm being swallowed by it. Something has to matter, as we whip around the Sun and it coasts around the galaxy, itself circling other galaxies, the fires of a quadrillion suns fed by the sheer indifference to their own existences. Awesome episode. Also I got to drive a C4 back in '96 and I was thrilled for that half hour of my life. I'm not a 'car guy' so I rarely get the opportunity to drive true performance cars. 'Vettes rule

6 years ago at 18 years of age I bought my 97 C5 6mt, bone stock. From a mechanical and aesthetic standpoint, it followed the pattern of the first RCR C5 review, a narrative about the C5 as a canvas upon which the enthusiast can paint themselves unabashedly and yet still be accepted among other owners of the same vehicle with diverse missions and goals. It was truly a creative outlet in these 6 years. Now, 6 years later, I've bought a house. Moved up in my job. But I'm dating a girl from another country, and it's looking possible that the house and the job may have to fall by the wayside for me to chase love and true happiness. And as I ponder over that, thinking the one thing I won't compromise on is bringing that corvette with me, Mr. Regular's new words ring true in my head: Go ahead and chase that horizon. The C5 is fast enough to get you there.

With that, I think I'll also be making the jump. It will be tough to leave the U.S, but bringing your car with you is a good way to keep something prized with you while you enter the next stage of your life. Best of luck, buddy!

The high gears are indeed very high, 6th gear going 55 feels like lugging it (but you can lug the shit out of it and it doesn't stutter). I bought a fairly low mileage C5Z for less than a used Civic and people act like I bought a new C8 off the showroom floor for 100 grand, non-car people just have no idea, it's a fucking space ship to them (then you get inside and it's like being 10 and getting driven to school in a Cavalier). When I was like 16 I remember having conversations to the effect of "American cars aren't good like Japanese cars, except the Vette and that costs way too much and smokes everything but is in a whole other class and doesn't count." Now I can choose between a wrong year S2K, an RX-7 FD with bad seals, half of an N/A MK4 Supra or a beautiful Vette grandpa never drove for ~$20K It's never been about image for me, I was never into the image when I had Miata 20 years before it was cool cause it was the best handling car I could afford, when I had a WRX I just wanted a practical car that could move , the C5/6 Vette is just the performance bargain of our time in so many ways. The fiberglass will never rust, many of these were garaged and maintained very well, they are dead simple to work on compared to modern/turbo cars and make as much power as most of th new stuff that is twice the price, the potential in an LS is crazy.... You just need a stereo, some LED lights (because my god will you outrun the 90's headlights on this thing and it's terrifying), an exhaust (they sound great but are very quiet) and maybe some coil overs. Ps. I set my GPS to backroads and I pretty much floor it off every light and I still average 17mpg. For what it is it's great on gas. The only issue with the fuel consumption is that I feed it the 93 it deserves.

@hiighcalibre
@hiighcalibre Жыл бұрын
@@BritPopVP70 Yeah AP1 vs 2 and there was some other thing maybe, I really only skimmed the surface of the S2K research before I decided it wasn't for me. I remembered how much I hated the old soft top on the Miata and the hard top S2Ks are super rare IIRC. I'm sure they are great cars but I also feel like they are really inflated since Honda never sold all that many and the production run wasn't all that long. Definitely more of a special, rarer collector car to hang on to, a fast and furious iconic JDM car that is very much in and cool and the track day car of choice for tighter courses... though I think for the street it lacks top end and for longer courses it lacks stability (the short wheel base giveth and taketh away). Also I don't know what the parts availability is like for them but I don't think it's all that great compared to the Vette which ran for nearly two decades on the C5/6 chassis. (250K C5s to 110K S2Ks before you even add in the C6s)... I still can't believe a 4-banger sports car from 20 years ago is going for 25K+

I owned a 2002 C5 z06 in black that I fully gutted and caged for racing. I rebuilt the entire driveline and upgraded most everything in some way. These cars are a serious, serious platforms to build a fast race car on. The great thing is parts availability and being able to do everything yourself, if you're brave enough - which I ended up being. After 5 years of track abuse, I finally had the back jump out on me under full load going around a corner and came almost head on into a concrete barrier. I was completely fine, but the car's frame got tweaked in the front and it was the end of that. I gutted it and made back a fat chunk of change. It was good timing, as I was buying a home and starting a new family. 2 years later now and I'm itching to get a C6 grand sport and just making it a sporty street car now. I think my hardcore track days are done - too much $$$. Karting looks to be the way to go at this point.

The C5 Z06 is easily the greatest Vette ever made. A perfect drivers car, if you want my opinion. Really well balanced between practicality, reliability, and performance. The power isn't too insanely high, and the suspension geometry is far better than previous generations and competitors. I'm not big on American cars, but I'd absolutely have one of these, or a New Edge SVT Cobra R

These videos get me everytime: hilarious opening, leveling up to the climax, then taking it back down with the philosophical reasoning of experience and maturity. Time is a cruel, yet polite bastard. Slowly taking little by little all the while you know it’s happening and yet ignoring it most days. You get little reminders that it hasn’t stopped moving forward; a sort of a tap on the window to let you it’s still out there, waiting for you, always.

I've been subscribed to you for a little over 8 years (your Stanza video was my first one). I think this is, by far, the most eloquently written/scripted video I've seen. I was feeling some type of way about aging as I watched and then you wrapped it up so beautifully at the end. Having a 65 yo dad who has an '04 C5 and a '17 C7 that I drive occasionally balances the line between "midlife crisis" and "getting what you want because you can." Lastly, thank you for the pop-up headlight footage. 🤤

Firstly, as an Australian, I don't see a dad car, I see an awesome looking red sportscar of which I had a model when I was 12 years old. Secondly, now at 35, I have to say some jeans, some new balance trainers and a rugby top represents not some joke get up, but the pinnacle of versatility for warmth, ease of movement and comfort, with a cheeky sleeve roll up if the sun comes out. I've married the love of my life, my jobs ok and pays the bills and for my hobbies, so yeah, I'd rock a C5 if I could because that would be cool as shit. Thirdly, my late dad was awesome. Corvettes rock.
