I don't think it's fair to say that the C5 can never be rebellious. The C5 development team got the order from GM to pull the plug on the project. Instead, they pretended like they never got it and worked nights and weekends to make this thing a reality. The C5, C6, C7, and now C8 ONLY exist because of the rebellious spirit of a small team inside of GM

It's definitely not the prettiest vette, but it does look pretty good. In a way, looks lower and wider than the C6 and up. Pretty would be the 1959 XP-87 Prototype Stingray, '63 Coupe, 1962, and '69 427. I was thinking about getting a C5, but always lean towards a '73 with a 4 speed. Some classier lines and steel. I do not need cruise control, traction control or the thought my car having airbags. Ruins steering wheel design, but the C5 is a still a great car and not an overrated car. Today, definitely gets more looks than the C6. C5s were in several wall posters and game covers and what not

The first corvette I owned was a c5, and I wasn't even looking for one. When I was about 23, I was looking at an unmolested 2001 e46 M3 with an incredible 12,000 original miles. I headed down to buy it, but also found on the lot a yellow C5. Now just like everyone else, I looked at it as a midlife crisis car with no real appeal, that was until I test drove it which completely changed my perception of Corvettes. They're genuinely fun cars, sound great, handle great, and get off the line pretty darn quick with torque to burn rubber even at highway speeds. My advice to anyone thinking about a corvette but reluctant because of the stigma that surrounds them would be to put yourself behind the wheel of one for a test drive - you will be pleasantly surprised.

I'm a baby faced 20 year old welder (not a lot of those) and since I'm finally making ok money I bought myself a 1999 corvette c5 6 speed with 75k and a ridiculous borla exhaust on it. these things are close to bottoming out on price (I think the c8 will be the deathblow) and I love it. nobody takes me seriously because I look like a kid, but when I show up in a corvette that sounds like a super car every guy that would've blown me off as some kid wants to know my life secrets as to how I got it, except when I stall it. It kinda demands respect from the middle class because it shows you know how to get what you want.

JC, way to go....sounds like you have it figured out. Just in case you are interested, C5 Corvettes boost really well, too. I don't own a Corvette, but know a guy who has one with a super-charger in it which makes close to 700 hp. The thing is an absolute rocket, and for less than the price of a new economy car.

Saw a 2000 model with only 51,010 miles on it for 14,900.00. Thing about the 2000 models is that they don't make parts for it anymore,so anything breaks on it. It's fucked.

This generation of Corvette (the C5) was the first Corvette to be sold in the UK in decades. If you wanted a Corvette in Europe in 1997, you would have to take it in left-hand drive, though, because GM didn't want to make a right-hand drive version for some reason. I am not sure how many takers there were, however.

Got my 01 Z06 with a ton of mods for 14,000 through a buddy. Pushes about 430 at the wheel where it sits and it's my daily driver. A base model C5 should only be 20 grand if it's procharged with supporting mods, 30,000 miles and without a scratch on the thing.

I've heard C5s are surprisingly cheap to insure, because like the video says-these are owned by a bunch of Boomers who think this car is a collectible, so they don't drive them, therefore don't crash them, get pulled over, etc.

I bought a Porsche Boxster when I was 17, traded for a 99 FRC corvette when I was 19. Couldn’t have been happier. Had an ‘02 Z06 later on. Dude, you can’t beat them. Maintenance is basically the same as any normal car (oil changes recommend Mobil 1, air filters, etc.). With 6-speed you can get amazing gas mileage, over 30 mpg pretty easily @ 50-80 mph. Super reliable. I highly recommend a 6-sp if you can drive a manual (Vettes are super easy to shift with, long gearing, plenty of torque) and hold their value better. Expect to pay several thousand extra and look harder to find one. Either way can’t go wrong with a C5. They will not lose any value if you take decent care of them. Also don’t let high miles deter you, these power trains are bulletproof. Lots of room for a 2 seater, surprisingly comfy ride for as low as it is. By far the best ride of any sorts car I’ve had (Porsche’s, 350z, BMWs, etc) even though it was the lowest, and this was with the Z51 suspensions which is the hardest riding.

For some, the cliches and all that mean nothing at all. "Mid-life crisis" car "Old-tech" engine? Who gives a shit. It's a RWD sports car that's highly affordable and fun to drive, sounds great, is actually good for road trips (with one passenger or less), and has decent reliability and an amazing aftermarket. Anything else projected onto this car - namely, stigmas and the kind of person who might have most commonly bought one when new - are totally irrelevant. Young people who are fans - and I'm sure many boomers and older people - know what I'm talking about. Real enthusiasts. What the car is to other people has no bearing on what the car is to us.

I got my C5 when I was 30. Friends made fun of me, but you know what? 12 years and 200k miles later, no mechanical issues whatsoever, it's still quick, and it's long been paid for. Sure, it has goofy turn signal issues, but that fucker starts every time and has honestly been the best car I've ever owned. Pro Tip: NEVER buy a convertible. Just not worth the leaks. Unless it's a killer deal.

Props to the owner for buying an actual C5 instead of just LS swaping his Miata like every other horsepower whore with a need for speed but no creativity or desire to do anything unique or interesting. Don't get me wrong, the LS is a great engine, but at the same time I wish that I could read a comment section on any car build ever without some GM-fanboys exclaiming that the guy should have done an LS swap instead. If I personally wanted a car with an LS or LT1 engine (which I do) than I would have bought an actual Corvette.

Yeah okay, but the C5 is a very gentle car to drive until you hit it hard. They can last many miles, and can be bought for a fair price with relatively low mileage. I guess your right about the older crowd driving them, but four door ricers are what younger people like these days. I don't think that this takes anything away from our American legend. We own a 99 C5 with the old man options ( Stainless exhaust and Air intake ), but looking down at all those gauges and that great hood and fenders through the windshield makes us happy. Didn't. I made it as far as the Wawa in Hamburg. Brakes locked up. Called AAA. Towed the car home. Got in my Honda Fit, drove that to Ford Nationals. It's just as well. There was a lot of rain at the show.

It's funny how perceptions of the owners of this gen Corvette differs between now and when it was new to market. Those who bought them when it was a new car compared to who owns one nowadays. The C5 was the first generation of Corvettes that started appealing to a younger generation of owners, and a significant percentage of owners were people in their 20s and 30s who bought them new. That trend continued through the C6 generation though perhaps falling off as other more appealing sports car options came to market. I guess all this is to say, the stereotype of C5 Corvette owners being gray-haired old men simply wasn't true at the time, and certainly not to the extent it was true for the previous C4 generation. The picture painted of the average owner in the review stands at dissonance with the reality observed during its actual time on market.

Age 50, bought a new 2019 Corvette C7 Grand Sport with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, and love this car. It's crazy powerful and fast, and still comfortable for long drives. If you're at all a driving enthusiast and know what an apex is, you will have fun with your Corvette. Yes, still have my original NSX, manual. Automatics are for wimps.

Gen3 LS car blocks were aluminum and truck/van blocks were iron blocks . All of them had aluminum heads except for the very first early 2000 6.0 truck blocks came with iron heads . So the iron heads are quite rare and nobody wants them .

I've always loved the C5. I thought it was the most timeless design of the bunch, since it wasn't dated by swoopy bodywork like the C3 or the boxy straight lines of the C4. Plus, it was the last generation with pop-up headlights, which I miss just as much as I miss gigantic hood ornaments (and fins!).

Respectfully, I think the C4 is the most timeless. Aside from a few details, like the incandescent lights, the design could have come out this year. The C5, on the other hand, is unmistakably of the late 90s. To be sure, it's among the best examples of that era, and it remains beautiful.

While I still hold the C5 close to my heart, I have also come to appreciate the clean styling of the C4 and the radical nature of the C3. The C5 did have traits of that 90s aero styling, and its fascia inspires comparisons to the Mazda RX-7.

Correction on the LS1 engine - it has an aluminum block and heads. The LM4 and LM7 (4.8 and 5.3 truck engines) have iron blocks and aluminum heads. I don't believe there are any iron LS cylinder heads. The rare L33 5.3 also has an aluminum block. The short of it- any car with a LS engine has a aluminum block. Most trucks have iron blocks, but there are exceptions.

You're on the right track, apart from your last sentence. All car engines do have aluminum heads & blocks. Several truck/SUV engines have iron heads & aluminum blocks, but many trucks & SUVs do have aluminum heads & blocks. Lastly, there is one engine model - the LQ4 6.0L (Vortec 6000), found in Silverado/Sierra 2500 pickups - that did indeed have iron heads & block in 1999 & 2000 only.

CalypsoNotch408 The LM4 has an iron block. The 4.8 is the smallest LS engine. It's a base engine. I helped my buddy with V8 swap in his TJ- it's an iron block LM4, with 4.8L of displacement.

Had my eye on a C5 Millenium yellow Vette decades ago. Never bought it. A month ago I pulled up to an ATM and walked up to the machine. I hear that sound, and pulling up right next to my 8 year old Chrysler 4-door is a Millennium Yellow C5 convertible with polished wire wheels like my first Healey. I said that's it, I'm buying the next one that catches my eye: yup, silver 2001 C5 joined the team last week. Yeah, I'm a little older, but at least I won't be saying "I coulda had one of those" on my death bed.

tm965 C6 Z06's are going for around double that. I'd have gone for the LS7 if it were cheaper. LS6 is great fun, though. I can get a cam and head pack for $3k and boost power to like 500RWHP.

Bought a clean, well maintained, unmodified 2004 base Corvette in June 2018 for a reasonable 15K dollars. I am now 65, and always wanted a Corvette since the day I rode in a brand new1965 427 fuel injected, close ratio 4-speed with 4.10 gears, at age 13. I always was a little car crazy and drove crazy as a kid. I could have had one in 1970, used, for a couple thousand dollars. I would have had some work to do on it, but I knew it would have been the death of me. Just my need for speed would have been too much too soon. I have had Firebirds, Roadrunners, Mustangs, etc. If you have never driven a Corvette of any generation you have no idea what it is. Those other cars do not compare. There is a difference. Four wheel independent double wishbone suspension with a 50-50 weight distribution with 350 horsepower and torque is simply a beautiful thing. That is basically a race car. Add comfort for street use and what more do you want? The Corvette is the premier American sports car and has credentials to back the boast. This car does not have the convenience of trunk space or having a computer surround sound discotheque and satellite communicators, and I do not want them. If I have an accident, it will not be from fiddling with all the knobs and touchscreen bullshit. It will be from some asshat who hits me. I have survived myself so far doing worse in crummy so-called "sports", "muscle", cars. I am not an old fart, fat, grey haired trying to be young. I just did not see why I should not have this car and still enjoy driving with a little, "spirit" once in a while. You can not go better for cheaper than this. It gets over 27 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg around town if you drive normally. Don't laugh, it is true. When this car sold new it was close to 50,000 dollars. It was the last year of the production line and pretty much all the kinks were worked out. Every car has their own particular weakness. You accept that and drive it. I think the thing is beautiful and drives just fine. It may be the last car I ever buy, and at the price I paid is worth every penny.
