Great info. I am 8 months po bilateral knee replacement and haven’t had real good results with our 8 inch steps in our two story house. I tried this after listening to your video and I feel that it’s my new lease on my life since graduating PT. Thank You,

I also appreciated the discussion on the “working” leg. Early on in my recovery, I was easily confused by the terms, “affected/unaffected” & “involved/uninvolved.” Think I got it now 5 years later, but I do like “working” as a way to focus on the side I’m currently working on. Thanks!

Excellent exercises to gain the confidence needed to descend safely. My suggestion is to start with a small height of 4-5 steps and gradually increase with the handrail. I have a three-story building near my house and I often go there by stairs. I step on each step with the other foot and feel an increase in security with an increase in muscle strength. There is no need to rush, persistence will surely pay off. Have a nice week.

Another winner Dr. T! 20 months into recovery following a hemmorrhagic and I'm all over stairs. I climb my in home 1 story stairs 3-5 times a day, step through. Still glued to the handrail.quad extention is solid from hip it's knee and ankle (I recently saw you have a specific a vid on ankle exercises it's knees and ankles that are weak on this body. I'm working up to hops and jumps and wondering if a mini trampoline used near my home gymwallmount hand rails makes sense as an ankle-knee recovery tool? My pt (who has hx as sports injury pt for Olympic athletes) wants to go there, but I don't see the brain train angle. He's great but he's not a DNPT As a former martial artist I love your rep approach to recovery training. It becomes kata. Perfect for a knucklehead like me

I do some of these, thanks to you, but can add or progress some, so thanks for the video. My 2 biggest challenges with stairs … 1) Going up, I can swing my involved leg (circumduction?). 2) Going down in public places, I need a handrail on the left, which can be a pain in a crowd going against traffic. I can go down steps without a rail if I have to (preferably one step at a time), although I’m not comfortable going down too many steps, plus spasticity can kick in if it’s a public/stressful situation. Thanks!

One of my problems when trying to use both legs to descend the steps is that my stroke leg swings inwards when I lead with it and I would end up treading on it with my other (good) foot. As a result, I only use my good leg to lead when descending. Going up the stairs has its own problems because my stroke leg won’t bend. All part of the frustration of recovery and trying to get back as much of what I had before my stroke.

Thank you so much Dr Tara Tobias I've similar experience... I'm adjusting it with... While walking upstairs I keep my unaffected leg two stairs and unaffected only one. From my unaffected side. While going down stairs, I go from affected side, One stairs from strong leg and then Two stairs from the unaffected with an average wall support at weaker side. Thank you so much Dr Tara Tobias

Thank you so much. I was born with a 'challenging' leg. Stuck ankle, skew knee to foot, shorter and skew hip. Has made climbing and descending stairs painful and difficult for my 53yrs on this planet. This is the FIRST time Ive gotten excercises to work the ankle to help with descending stairs. Thank you 🙏

I would love to see one where you teach people how to run again. I've been practicing hopping on my involved leg. Hopping on both like a skipping. But I can feel that I can't get into the air. When I hop on the involved leg I always need to hold on to something. I've been doing all of this for a while but can't seem to get past the inabilito leap in the air

Thank you for this wonderful video. It includes both routines and the explanations. Because watching the explanations a few times is enough but there is no end for doing exercises. If possible either time stamp (isolate) the explanation section from routine demo ore have them in two separate videos. This way, after one watches and learns all about the explanation, one could just watch the exercise portion repeatedly. In conclusion, change the current video title to "Leg Exercises To Go Down Stairs - exercise with explanation" . And create a new video with title of "Leg Exercises To Go Down Stairs - Exercises only".

I feel like my involved leg right knee joint is in severe pain while bending and my ankle can't support my weight. I can't do toe lifts. When walking the back of the ankle aches like their is no muscle or ankle support so when walking downstairs I must find something to hold on to... no confidence.

For some reason & even my therapist doesn’t know why, I can not lift my left leg without putting excessive force on my left arm/elbow. I am a stroke survivor.

Muscles that fire together wire-together I had the same issue What my PT did with me when I was fresh on the Stroke recovery is when you're walking get him/her to kinda hold your hand n swing your arm with you while you're walking Might seem kinda weird but when mine done that after a lil while(almost immediately) after mine started doing that it felt like it unlocked a new fluidity with my motion.. Almost like everything got faster. You get used to it after some practice but you eventually start exerting that force in a more targeted way.. I was 15 when it happened to me, 9 years out today. Left side effected With how weird everything gets/feels afterwards, sometimes you gotta lean into that idea and try some 'weird' ideas that throws your body a curveball to try to unlock some movements Hope this helps!

I didn't have a stroke, but have pinched nerves and some spinal atrophy. My PT said that the messages telling my leg to lift weren't getting through to the muscles of my leg. With PT it's gotten some better but I still have some loss of function.
