Once a great coach told me the only way to learn how to jump higher is to actually jump. What I find is most kids are very introverted with their bodies so they don’t over sell the movements in order to successfully execute a jump. Either they leave their arms, legs or core out of the equation and guess what…..no real,power in their jump, so they are grounded. Really throwing the arms up helps the body gain momentum in the jump. Actually bending the legs helps explode off the ground and the core is that last 1/3rd of the equation. A strong core helps the explosion factor in the properly executed jump. A strong core also allows the hitter to turn on balls faster and create that whip effect on the ball. So, you don’t really need any equipment to increase vertical. You just need to over emphasize the movements and do them intensely and often.

This is great stuff...This reactive strength training will absolutely transfer over to other sports including basketball, hockey and for me MMA with speeding up explosiveness in a quicker manner not just being explosive but being explosive/powerful faster!! Love it Reid!

As a 37 year old life-long hooper, thank you so much. I just realized it doesn't matter how high I jump. Defenders would always recover and contest my shots around the rim. Being able to explode quicker is the key and you just provide me the info to get to the key.

Hey Reid ( or anyone in the comments who can help)! You talk a lot about developing strength before adding these explosive, jump exercises into your workout. My first club tournament is coming up on January 30, so I have a little less than 2 months. I have not been training and am trying to get started and conditioned fast, so I can get into improving my jump and speed (reactive strength). How long do you recommend I work solely on strength training? Also I assume this is just lifting such as squats, lunges, and other controlled exercises, but I am not sure. If anyone wants to help me come up with a plan so I can be ready come tournament time, that would be great!
@ReidHallWorkouts
@ReidHallWorkouts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily, focus on strength training for 3 to 4 weeks. You can still include some jumping exercises but just do not over do it. After 3 to 4 weeks start adding these jumping exercises after your warm up and before you do your strength work. If you go to my youtube channel you will find lots of workouts.

This is great but in addition you have to do progressive loading or squat heavier. I read many peer reviewed papers and tried it myself after I platoed for a year... then I started 5x5 Stronglifts app program in addition to quick reaction and plyometrics and I gained 6 inches in 3 months... BTW I didn't lose weight, I'm 47 and jumping 30 inches at 5'8"... If you really want to go higher you have to lift progressively heavier.

@@bharatdhurua953 Wow! Talk about being negative and bringing people down! Who says 47 is an old age? Also if you have been a constant athlete and are in good physical condition you can certainly still jump if you are in your 50's and even 60's. I bet you there are elite athletes even in their 70's with much better condition than people in their 20's.

There’s going to be stress but that drill itself is helping the body learn to respond in more impactful moments such as max jumping and landing or repetitive jumping and landing.

Doing speed/power exercises before your lifts allows you to put your full energy into those movements. Contrast training is also great but that is something you selectively add into your training.

Doing leg blasters while preparing for ski season, I quickly found out that speed, power combo exercises need a lot of energy and can’t complete the full set at correct intensity and form if I combine it will weightlifting. I had to do it before and based on remaining energy levels, I had to adjust my weight schedule. Fun 😅ah.

For beach vball, is it better to do plyos on sand, turf, or hard floor? I'm guessing hard floor or turf since these are for reactive strength?
@ReidHallWorkouts
@ReidHallWorkouts Жыл бұрын
I would prefer to do it in the sand. I like plyos in the sand because of the extra resistance the sand creates and that landing in sand is less impact. All are fine options but I like sand the best.
