Hail! Hands on History AS. I love this video. Part of my background is Scandinavian. I will be making my own Viking thing's, my Viking friends will help me.

My take-away from this is that the tarp must be pitched steeply. And that makes sense, even though it never occurred to me how important that aspect was and how important it was in all improvised shelters. Thank you Heidi!

It's odd to see a mestizo with an interest in Germanic culture. Maybe you can answer me something. Online I track a lot of internet creepers who predate on children (can't say the actual word due to the YT filter), 100% of them have Spanish names and live in South American countries, and 100% of the victims of their grooming are white children with blonde hair and blue eyes. What is going on culturally with their infatuation with our children? And why is it not frowned upon behaviour in your culture? If I straight up call them p-words (again filter) they reply with a laughing face and a thumbs up and have no shame about it. They use their real names, have their wives, childrens, and workplaces linked to their social media. It's as though they assume there is no penalty for trying to contact children for ... well, reasons that KZbin's new live comment filter would shadowban my account for mentioning. But why is predating on children accepted in your society? In our society we hunt such people down and do unspeakable things to them that often results in their death or castration.

@@dr.lexwinter8604 First of all, the way you talk about an entire continent and its society shows a tremendous ignorance and a subtle racism that is read between the lines. Those behaviors are indeed penalized here and I've never seen those comments before. I don't know the websites you frequent, but you should do two things: 1) Report them and denounce them if possible and 2) Realize those bastards are everywhere in the world, not just in South America. Usually the evilest and most powerful ones are in the more developed countries. Just for the record, the worst pederasts in my country's history were actually German (and others from other European countries). Those people escaped from the WW II and established a powerful p-word business. I encourage you to investigate about Paul Schaeffer and Spiniak. And not because of that I'm saying all Germans are pederast... You perspective of people and their cultures is simply distortioned and racist, people like you are as evil as p-philes.

ive heard of 'brushing' wool to align fibers so that it sheds water better, perhaps that would be another option? i love your videos!

@faultroy Felting is more a bronze age thing for larger materials. Unless you mean felting a woven woolen object? But if you mean felting as a method of joining fibres together, that was more often used as socks and hats from the stone age right up until the twentieth century. Making felt socks is fun and easy, pad your shoes with the fibres, put your feet in, and forget about it. When you take them off, you have felted socks. It's pretty neat.

@leighrate
@leighrate 6 жыл бұрын
The tarps primary function is to get you out of the wind. Not keep you dry. If your wearing layers of oiled wool & linen being wet isn't that much of an issue.
@HandsonHistoryAS
@HandsonHistoryAS 6 жыл бұрын
Yes that is our experience too =) But the question we are answering is how and what we use to make the tarp more water resistant.

So you wrap your bed-roll inside tarp or vice versa? I thought having the tarp as the outer layer would help keep your dry if you are caught in a downpour.

That is a ridiculously HUGE bedroll. How big do you think you are? What part of your body touches the ground? Your shoulder, upper arm, hip, and feet. So realistically if you put some of your gear at your feet you only need from your pillow (which again can be your gear wrapped in a shirt) to your hip. That's three or four feet by about six inches wide, double it for extra comfort. You aren't rolling around in the night, so four foot by one foot is enough of a bedroll. I suspect from the amount of material that your tarps are ridiculously oversized like your huge bedroll too. I suggest something small enough to cover one man uncomfortably with tie points to join two or more together. Thus three men can tie theirs together to make space for three men to sleep (no homo).
@HandsonHistoryAS

How small do you think we are? ;) This is the same size bedroll we use on every hike, and we've been on a lot of those. We use the lightest reindeer pelts for hiking. Either small ones with thick winter fur, or slightly bigger spring pelts with thinner fur. These pelts weigh very little :)
