Watch the pilots of this Wizz Air Airbus A321neo taxi and backtrack on the runway, blast the plane spotters, but then reject their takeoff for unknown reasons. While every departure from Skiathos seems routine, this RTO proves how vigilant and professional pilots must be for each and every takeoff, to ensure the safety of their passengers, especially on Skiathos' short, narrow and sloped runway. Listen to all ATC communications from taxi, to rejected takeoff, to taxi-back, to departure, and watch the aircraft's second attempt at taking off, which was successful and equally as powerful!

Funny, the call-sign is really Wizzair 123. That is such a typical call-sign in the simulator when practicing situations like an RTO that I always fear, I will use the very same numbers (123) when rejecting the take-off in real life…

At only 1748metres long its a very short runway, the a321 used by wizz air are currently the largest aircraft to operate into skiathos.

I used to go there often and sometimes the aircraft had to refuel at Thessaloniki- something to do with the mountains/short runway and not being able to have enough fuel on board to reach the UK unless they do a full refuel on the way- not sure if that was real reason or not.

We went there on our first visit to Skiathos, but no one warned us about the jet blast and we were blown off our feet! Such a shock! Lol 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂😂

@@dianamarner222 There are large signs warning about jet blast. You could be blinded or otherwise injured by gravel and other projectiles. That jet blast powerful enough to hurl cars through the air.

Do you use vegas editing? when you see double tail when panning left on pause, usually happened to me, had to right click on clip and disable resample for progressive frames. Interlace though might make that happen too

@@greatflyer_aviation ah yes, when you press pause on the youtube video sometimes you see there is the tail and another ghost tail. It's the vegas's annoying Resample click box. in the old version movie studio 10 It was possible to Disable Resample by right clicking on the video and theres a few text, i forget what and then says disable resample on one of those arrows. In later versions they took the ability away so you are just left with it until you buy the other versions :( annoyed me for a while. I had moved to another editor for free.

Yeah and with your assumption about the brake cooling rules you were right. Most WZZ A32X s do NOT have Brake Fans installed which means for a RTOW at least twice as much time is needed for cooling down the brakes until they have 150 °C reached savely. Its the recomended MAX brake temp for the 32X family

Not quite right. There's no brake limitation for taxying the aircraft. The limitation is for takeoff. And without brake fans on, the temperature needs to be below 300 deg C, not 150. 150 is if you have brake fans and they are on. This is because the cooling effect reduces the reliability of the temperature sensors.

@@schillaci5590 well there is a recommendation for taxiing. And its at or below 300 C°. The 150 are for take off and thats what I wrote above. So yeah. And Brake Fans are OFF for take off. So at around 100 to 170 C° at normal 4 leg or even more route ops a day, fairly common to see :^)

Thanks a lot! Yes, Skiathos is an island in Greece! I considered dual cameras but didn't have space to carry two tripods, plus less and less people stand behind the blast as they are becoming aware of the danger (thankfully!).

Not below 100kts, but below V1, which varies from flight to flight depending on the runway length, plane weight, air temperature and pressure and flap settings 😉 same on any aircraft

Well, he is actually right. In Airbus aircraft a rejected takeoff is performed below 100 knots for any caution/warning. Above 100 knots the decision to reject a takeoff is a more serious matter because of the high speed. Above 100 knots most cautions/warnings are automatically inhibited in Airbus aircraft up to a certain altitude after takeoff. Above 100 knots and below V1 you should only reject the takeoff for serious failures like engine failures, fires, unable to fly.

Lots of rubber right from the start of the runway. Not a place an aircraft would want to get stranded with technical issues, as local support would be limited.

the blast from the jet blast seems very violent. it must be difficult to hold on to something and very difficult to stay upright. it must be dangerous. I would not do that because when I see how people are pushed, it would be too violent for me who is light (I am between 40 and 50kg).

Watched a Wizz plane land there 2 weeks ago on Skiathos, they landed well down the runway that time! Never liked the AirBus from Skiathos as they need to do a fuel stop somewhere like Corfu or Thessaloniki to be able to take of loaded from Skiathos which is a pain

Yes and wanted to get off !!!but pilot reassured that it was false alarm ( a light switched on while taking off and for safety reasons they had to abort the take off) . We had to wait for the brakes to cool off before departure

Rejecting take-off is evidence of an alert, risk averse and well-trained crew. The gung-ho thing would be to continue and take the problem into the sky. Wizz Air operate virtually the youngest fleet in the world so if you're suggesting their crew or aircraft are in any way inferior you couldn't be more incorrect.

Good point. When I went there there was a sign telling you not to stand there, with red flashing lights (it might be illegal in fact to stand there!) 🙂 You can still get a quite good view from slightly up the road.
