I really loved that the Kate Winslet and Jack Black relationship was so incredibly intimate and yet those scenes didn't end in sex. Nothing against sex, but it's so wonderful to see a man with other priorities who's capable of real vulnerability without a sexual agenda in a movie.

They got some kisses in at the end, but he "got" her, because their scenes took the time to allow him to do that. And together, they really helped another person in Arthur too, so... all in all, was really nice. I watch this movie every year and fast forward Cameron and Jude's scenes because I'm in it for Kate and Jack.

For all that's wrong with Amanda and Graham in the Holiday, at least they were able to show that it's okay for guys to cry, a good dad relationship, and I'm glad they showed that Amanda genuinely took an interest in Grahams daughters because goals and values are essential in a relationship, not just "love," so it's good that those aspects sort of aligned there.

I rewatch The Holiday every year. I'm not sure if I love Iris and Mile's relationship or Iris's friendship with Arthur more. All three just seem like lovely real people with real issues they are working through and supporting each other with in a genuine way. It makes the Iris/Miles relationship feel a lot more real to me than typical romance movie relationships.
@SarahRichardsGraba

I think Iris's friendship with Arthur is healing her of bad friendships in London as well. We don't know a lot about her friends but the one coworker she talks to in the beginning tells her that she's pathetic... Not exactly good friend material. So once she forms an actual friendship based on love (simultaneously happening with Miles), she can regain her self worth and then enter into a healthy romance. It's really brilliant. I wish there were more co-ed platonic healthy friendship movies. 😂
@juliewagner3023
@juliewagner3023 Жыл бұрын
@@SarahRichardsGraba Not only that, but Arthur’s encouragement of Iris to watch those old movies with powerhouse leading ladies was truly brilliant. Iris didn’t know how to assert herself, didn’t understand gumption, and didn’t know how to become “the leading lady of [her] own life,” and Arthur couldn’t tell her how. But, he gave her a multitude of examples, and she was able to be influenced by that and really grow as a woman and as a person. It was beautiful ❤️ Also, yes please x1000 to more platonic, healthy, co-ed friendships, and bonuses for intergenerational friendships!

There's a lot of people who absolutely love bad movies because they're bad, see the cult following of "The Room" (often referred to as the worst movie of all time) as another example. It's just funny to see how absurdly bad something is and have your mind blown at every moment about how it couldn't possibly get worse/cornier/make less sense etc., and then it does! And then people love movies that are really good or have really good elements they can hold onto. I think for Alan, the Christmas Prince falls into "it's so bad it's good", and other movies he likes fall into the "it's good" category, and (for him at least) The Holiday isn't bad enough to be a 'good' bad movie, but it's not good enough to be a 'good' movie, so he doesn't like it. Too in the middle! That's his opinion though, I love The Holiday lol. It's flawed, but it has enough really good elements in it that make me want to keep watching it and make up for the bad elements imo.

I can't help it. I love the Holiday movie. You may call it bad writing.. but until you've lived with the whole unrequited love thing for as long as I did (about three times as long as Iris did in the movie) the fact that someone could articulate so clearly what that actually felt like meant everything to me. And Kate and Jack Black's romance are not dissimilar to how I fell for my husband- we became friends first and he supported me at my lowest when he didn't even have to.

me and my friends watched 'Happiest Season' in our art class yesterday and once the movie ended we were all upset that Abby took Harper back. Harper was awful to her the entire time and then drove to this random gas station that she somehow knew Abby was at and then managed to get her happy ending. We were hoping Abby would end up with Riley, who treated her so much better and never crossed any lines, or to stay single and go home. We were all disappointed by the ending and complained about it for the rest of the afternoon.

I'm not saying I can speak for all lesbians as a lesbian myself, but, every lesbian that I've talked to about this movie completely agrees that Abby should have ended up with Riley, especially because there is already so little representation to begin with and no one should be subjugated to that sort of treatment from their partner regardless of the situation.

For me, the biggest problem with the movie is that Harper doesn't suffer any consequences for how she treated Abby. I think the movie would have improved a lot if Harper had chosen Abby over her family, but by her own decision and not because she was forced to come out.
@jazzyfreshh14
@jazzyfreshh14 Жыл бұрын
Ths whole problem in the movie could've been solved by Harper just telling Abby the truth from the beginning and letting her know she wasn't out vs lying and then telling her 5 mins before she's expected to meet her family that they're just gonna act like "friends. The fact that she didn't give her a choice at that point is super fucked up

I had loved Kate Winslet before, but The Holiday - the silly movie that it is - really drove it home what a great actress she is (that was before Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown): she was so lovable and charming and relatable as Iris. Maybe it's because her character was just a regular woman going through stuff that most of us go through, it was easy to see how comfortably she inhabits that role. When she arrived in LA and couldn't contain her joy at being in such a beautiful house I kept thinking: yes, that's _exactly_ how I would behave too. And when she finally shows the door to the guy who was using her and then just checked herself for a moment to see if she was _actually_ happy about him being gone, before she proceeded to whoop for joy: that was perfect!

One Christmas movie dynamic I will never get over is The McAllister's and the McAllister adjacent family (the uncle and cousins and such.) Like Kevin is full on bullied and emotionally abused by his family and then blamed for their behaviour and gaslit into thinking it is all his fault and made to be the bad guy for lashing out. Kevin's parents are terrible parent's and his siblings and cousins are also awful people. Like that is a toxic family and household. No wonder Kevin wished them away twice. And the fact that social services didn't have the family on their radar after the first time only for it to happen again is unreal. Kevin is smart and savvy and a victim. He single handedly stops two home invasions and also shows kindness and empathy by reaching out to and befriending people who have been outcast by the society around them in the bird lady and the old guy who is the neighbour (can't remember his name). But like honestly if I were Kevin as soon as I became old enough to leave of my own accord I would get as far away from that family as possible. they feel incapable of changing. okay rant over. Merry Christmas you filthy animals.

True! I just watched both films, and while I do think in Home Alone it comes off a little more as just everyone is irritable because of travelling, and everyone's at fault for different things, Home Alone 2's beginning is kind of messed up. Kevin gets a solo at his Christmas Pageant, but his brother makes fun of him on stage, causing the entire auditorium to laugh at Kevin, including his uncle. Kevin pushes his brother, which causes a chain reaction of everyone on stage falling over, but it's clearly an accident. Then the family holds some kind of family meeting so Kevin and his brother can apologize to them??? Like, why does the family need an apology? And why would Kevin be expected to give one? The family accepts Buzz's half-assed and clearly fake apology with warm smiles, but does nothing to help Kevin. He's a 10 year old kid who had his solo ruined and was just embarrassed in front of a huge crowd of people, and the parents don't even tell Buzz he was wrong to do so, they just say "That was a lovely apology Buzz!"

I wish he were in more romance movies, idk, another thing I loved about their pairing is that it wasn't the overplayed HOT PEOPLE HOT PEOPLE couple we see so much. Even Aubrey Plaza thinks that Abby should have ended up with her character Riley in "Happiest Season." Although it's understandable for Harper to be reluctant to come out to her ultra Conservative parents, she still threw her own girlfriend under the bus repeatedly, and still managed to get a happy ending.
@PianoCatProductions

Agreed! No disrespect to Jono and Alan but I hated Happiest Season. Yes Harper makes some steps after the whole debacle - but that initial mistake of not telling Abby she wasn't out until they're almost at the house?! And the whole time she's pitied as the orphan?! That's so much to thrust upon someone. Like if Harper had warned Abby when she invited her - something along the lines of "I'm not out to my family and we'd be considered 'just friends' but I don't want you to be alone this christmas. Please come with me." I would have been so much more understanding of Harper.

@@PianoCatProductions I completely agree, my fiancee and I were excited to watch this movie just to be disappointed. We were thinking it was gonna be more comedic but we were just mad and annoyed most of the time. Not saying any relationship is perfect, but my heart would break if I saw my fiancee flirting with her ex! Harper may not have had any romantic intent but the physical touch was flirty imo. Harper is an inconsiderate person and just unlikable as the movie progressed. Riley was a much better person, she was never flirty with Abby and was there to support her but never crossed the line. It would've been fine if Abby just didn't end up with anyone! If someone wants to watch a better LGBT Christmas movie, watch Single All The Way

Agreed, it's not that Harper couldn't come out to her parents, it's that she lied about it. Even worse, only told Abby about it when they're nearly there, in a car, so Abby had no choice but to go along with it really. And then I felt like Harper for the rest of the movie just makes these grand, empty statements and "I love yous" to Abby in private while doing nothing though her actions to back it up... it really dampened the romance part of the film for me.

Sigh… Happiest Season… As a woman who dates women, I love the representation of how scary and messy it is coming out, and what that can look like from a partner’s perspective. I related to Harper so much, but when she started actively hurting the ones she loved without ever drawing a single boundary she lost all respect from me (and a lot of queer people). To set a boundary you don’t have to come out, but she could have communicated to her parents that they can’t control her, or at least defended Abby (ya know without being threatened with a break up) and hello! Not framed her as a charity case?! Not to mention the immediate lie at the beginning, where she fully manipulated Abby into agreeing to hide everything when there almost already there (Abby also had no escape either :/ ). Harper was just not mature enough for this kind of relationship. Harper never really gets how bad she is either? At the end there’s a glimmer, but everything she does is so self serving. Even when she goes after Abby at the end it is to preserve her own happiness. They weren’t together that long, Abby is totally alone except for the fish (RIP) and Dan Levy, and based off the way Harper treated Abby at the first test of their relationship… idk. She was so toxic, in a really real way that was so triggering 😅 Plus! Aubrey Plaza is RIGHT THERE! Looking perfect in navy. IDK if it is just me (or rather me and all of my friends who agree) but we’d ditch the gf for Riley 😂

Usually I really love your videos and your insights! That's why I was excited for this video, also because I saw The Holiday would be in it - one of my absolute favorite movies. And then I found myself nearly screaming with frustration at my screen around two minutes in... I pushed through and watched the whole video but still I'm frustrated. The movie follows the story of two complete different women and thereso different couples but basically it's the "love/lust at first sight" and "friends turned lovers" tropes and to see these two kinds of relationship beginnings makes the movie interesting and fun. To say that a relationship cannot be healthy just because it started with casual sex - no matter how much insight the couple shares with each other afterwards - ok, you're a family therapist Jonathan, I can get your take on this. I don't agree with you though, because I think it doesn't matter so much how a relationship starts (Graham is not that drunk by the way and he totally gives his consent!), it matters what the couple does with it and how they work through things, how they communicate etc. And Amanda and Graham do that, they spend time together, they share laughter, silly and serious, emotional things with each other, they put in the work. I totally don't get Alan's criticism of the dialogue. How is the dialogue in here worse than in A Christmas Prince? I share with you why I'm so defensive: there are two scenes, one with Amanda (talking to a not totally drunk Graham about how she thinks she's bad at the "sexual stuff" because her partners told her she is bad) and one with Iris (where she told Miles how long she held up hope for Jasper to come to his senses and how he used her again and again) and in both scenes the dialogue exactly says what I felt in my toxic relationship in my twentys. Like exactly! The first time I watched this movie I was crying so hard, 'cause I felt totally understood for the first time in just these two scenes. I call that very good writing! But yeah, different people, different opions, I guess.

Love the Holiday! I didn't think the script was that bad; certainly better than most modern romantic films, though it admittedly still keeps a number of Hollywood tropes and staples. While I like both couples, I can totally understand and see the issues with Amanda and Graham - because yeah, it would be obviously sketchy had the roles been reversed. It's a "sweet in a movie, unhealthy in real life" Hollywood moment. I just appreciate that the Holiday felt like it subverted a lot of cliches that you see in Hallmark and B-rated romcoms. Like Iris' storyline is about finding her self-worth, and though it involves a lot of romantic themes, ultimately the end of her story happens when she finally realizes that the man she loved for years treated her horribly, and that she should treat herself and her life with more integrity. Amanda and Graham's story is much more focused on the romantic relationship, but I liked that with Amanda initially coming out of a long term relationship where her boyfriend cheated on her, she had to learn how to be vulnerable while also finding someone who viewed her more as an equal, which she deserved. Plus Graham being openly emotional and crying at the end was nice to see; he never pretended to be some super tough, closed off guy. (And Jack Black was perfect in the film).

I have a soft spot for that film, but. The story isn't that bad, but THE DIALOGUE. Ugh. The problem with Last Christmas is that it is absolutely heartbreaking at a time when a lot of people may already be feeling sad and missing loved ones, the Holiday is good because everyone is sad at the start and happy at the end. Seriously for Christmas movies I think the only criteria is that you feel good at the end. It's already a stressful time, why watch stressful movies?

The problem with Last Christmas was that the AUDIENCE expected it to be an erotic romance, when it is actually is more of a romance of self, family, and people in general. Most people will not find their soulmate over the holidays, but people can create more meaningful friendships with family members and community members. It makes me so sad that audiences don't see non-sexual relationships as rewarding as sexual ones.

I actually like the Amanda and Graham’s storyline in The Holiday, too, because they are both broken people who are on their way to becoming whole again. Both relationships are about healing. When I find myself feeling despair I remember Iris saying “Low point! Low point!” It helps me to find equilibrium. Such a lovely, funny movie. 💕💕💕 Have you seen Love Hard? I have not laughed that much watching a movie since Rat Race.

I felt the lesbian closeting dialogue so hard... Not the same, but my husband and I are both bi and polyamorous. He's pretty certain he will lose his homophobic dad if either of us are ever totally out, and he isn't ready for that, so we aren't. While he isn't hiding me or our relationship in the way they are in that film, it still results in hiding pretty big parts of who I am, as well the women I date. And this is actually painful.

If he really loves his dad because of his good qualities (and not because of a toxic bond), then I would just lead the conversation by saying how much he cares about him and how much he doesn't want to lose him and that that's why he put this off even though it's really important to him. I believe hard conversations are always worth having. Consider reading the book "Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High"; it might change your life.

As someone who's been the hidden person in a polyamorous relationship where we all were queer (he was a bi cis man in a marriage with a bi cis woman, and I am bi/pan but was at the very beginning of my ftm transition at the time), it takes a huge toll. Honestly everyone involved suffers in their own separate ways, some more than others. Have you talked with your husband about how all of this effects you? And as someone who had to cut ties with all of my family, honestly it was all completely worth it even though I am horrifically poor now lol 😅but I understand not everyone is willing/able to let go of toxic family for multiple reasons. I just personally can't see the worth or point in holding on to people who deny your existence and basic rights as a person (again though I totally get it's hard to get to that point, and I kept trying for a decade to get my family to even try to understand. Also the potential financial hardship involved in cutting off family is a pretty big deciding factor lol)

@@its_the_bird I'm totally with you. I hate it on so many fronts and am so done with anyone who wouldn't accept me for who I am. The thing is, he has lost two father figures (one abusive ex-stepfather and a good stepfather who died literally in his arms), his mom has terminal cancer, and he knows how tenuous and superficial this relationship with his dad is but I think the trauma of these losses make the prospect of losing another parent feel immense. He knows it affects me and feels guilty about it, but he also gets panic attacks every time I bring up the subject. I probably need to badger him back into therapy again so he can work on this. I'm fortunate that I haven't been seriously involved with anyone who particularly wanted any involvement with my family, but that day will come and, as you rightly point out, it's really not right or even sensible to hide them at a certain point. Unfortunately though, this will probably have to come from me having to force his hand. And I don't know if I have the right to ask him to sacrifice this relationship just so I can feel more authentic but I think he would if I gave him an ultimatum. Though I worry that he may resent me if I did. Financially, though, we would be fine at least. My parents are well off and have honestly given us way way more help than his have.

You guys should review Last Holiday with Queen Latifah. It is _by far_ my favorite Christmas movie as a pagan witch. It's just so wholesome and encouraging. All about being yourself with everyone and showing enthusiasm and kindness to those around you. It shows that you can rock people's entire fucking world just by being a good person in a bad situation. Plus, Queen Latifah's acting is always so, so good. That woman is my bias and she's so talented between her acting, rapping, singing, just being amazing...

The Holiday is one of my all time favourite comfort movies - exactly because of Kate Winslet and Jack Black. A fun memory I have of this that I always think of when I watch it now is this one time i was talking to a friend about how people in movies doesn't cry realistically like - it is SO HARD to find a movie where the character just really ugly cries, because of many reasons and I jumped up from the couch like I know 1 movie where one of the protags ugly cries like all. the. time. Which is honestly something I relate to a lot. That uncontrolled emotions when you start talking about something you're vulnerable about and like how she walks around sobbing but still needs to feed the dog and do shit. It's so fucking relatable (and a little bit funny). Also Jack Black is so damn charming. You can't tell me that cheeky smile won't melt anyone.

Ngl I low key love The Holiday. Kate Winslet can do no wrong. The way they all meet and rush into everything by creating two love stories in a two week timespan is a bit toxic but the charming English cottage. The unrequited love backstory. I see Last Christmas at the Library, might have to scoop that up.

I think that's why the Iris/Miles side of the film is a lot better than the... you know, I can't remember the characters' names, either, and that probably does say something about that side of the story. 🙄 Iris and Miles don't rush it; if it wasn't for the last wrap-up scene of them all in England at New Year's Eve, nothing about it would feel terribly rushed, I think - it's left fairly open-ended, just "I enjoy being with you and I'd like to see if we can actually turn it into dating".
