Based on the actions the joker executed throughout the entire film, he resorted to prove that everyone deep down is like the Joker, a force of chaos that’s waiting to be unleashed like a dragon trying to unchain itself so it can kill and destroy. He wants everyone to be like him so that he can create a society where he can feed off of the worst of mankind and to satisfy his own desires, desires that he never got in his life prior to the dark knight. In a way, he’s not wrong, everyone is technically capable of killing if pushed far enough, but he failed to realize that people still have compassion and goodness, he was just so convinced of his cynicism towards people, thus deluding him in his own cognitive bias.

i love that one brief moment when this joker has a genuine reaction. he needs the world to be insane in order for him to have a place in it. when he fails to prove the world is as crazy as he is, he is wounded, and for the first time we see him hurt. for the first time, he thinks it's not funny.

@jackiecicchetti11515 жыл бұрын
This comment needs more recs. Indeed, this is the only time in the film in which the Joker is shocked, completely taken aback. Humanity dramatically revealed the genuine light and compassion that Ledger's character was attempting to prove didn't exist, and his mind, for one split second, can't cope with that.
@1neomonkey5 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but the Joker becomes humanized with having to cope with the failure of his plot and being proven wrong. Instead of owning up to that fact, he does exactly what the rest of us do, make up stubborn excuses even though he's already lost.
@speedracer20084 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The look on his face is just pure frustration. After seeing the Joker smugly point out throughout the entire movie how he has humanity figured out and expects it to collapse when pushed, seeing him be proven wrong is so satisfying.

only change i would make: instead of the one guy just chickening out and putting the remote back, i wanted somebody to stand up and say "hey, um, why are we trusting the homicidal maniac when he says that button blows up that boat's bomb and not this one's? how about we just not press any buttons?" that would be exactly his sense of humour. to make them blow themselves up in the attempt to save themselves. we already saw him switch the addresses when he told batman where harvey and rachel were, knowing he would go after rachel and save harvey instead. you can bet he gave these boats the remotes to their own bombs

@@brandonsmith9098 Nolan messed up this scene, because this is not a Prisoner's dilemma. For this to be a Prisoner's dilemma, there has to be an outcome that would be optimal for both groups if they both cooperate, but there is no such outcome (since they don't know that Batman is coming to the rescue). Detonate or not, one ship can never save the other ship.
@goranmilic442 Жыл бұрын
@@brandonsmith9098 Although I agree with you that madman is in charge (Joker), it doesn't matter. The fact is they can't save other boat, but they can save their own boat. Two destroyed boats is worse than one destroyed boat. So what was Nolan trying to say here?
@goranmilic442 Жыл бұрын
@@brandonsmith9098 I agree with your first three sentences. But Nolan (and his character Joker) didn't set the experiment correctly. That was my point, Nolan messed up. In Nolan's scenario, to detonate would actually be moral and logical. Since there is no way to save other boat (either you destroy it or Joker does), why not save 500 people on your boat? Surely you understand that, under Joker's rules, 500 people on other boat are dead whatever you do. Why does 500 people on your boat must die?
@goranmilic442 Жыл бұрын
@@brandonsmith9098 Please remember the Joker's rules. If you detonate, other ship is destroyed. If you don't detonate, both ships are destroyed. Therefore, you can't save the other ship. You can only save your ship or no ship. Since you can't save other ship, why not save yours? By detonating, you're not snuffing other's lives, you're saving 500 people. And it's not about math, it's about saving 500 people.

Lines like that make The Dark Knight one of my favourite films of all time. The whole conflict of the movie is about the morals and humanity of Gotham, something the Joker lacks and is trying to prove everyone deep down is deprived of. Through anarchy, chaos, and "upsetting the established order", he attempts to unravel the darkness of man's heart. Yet at the end of the day, the Joker's efforts were futile. The people on the ferry, while they were desperate to save themselves, could not bear the thought of being responsible for murdering an entire ferry of people - even if they are criminals. The social experiment on the ferries was a demonstration of the humanity, compassion, and empathy the citizens of Gotham deep down possess; which is something Batman fights so hard to preserve amidst this chaos.

I have an idea on how they could have... seeing how the 3rd movie was based off dark knight returns, the joker was I that story, and 2 pt. animated movie, I think in Nolan's DKR joker could've been like that. make joker a vegetable, inactive, just another Arkham nutcase. the way he was so obsessed, and all over bats ,and with bats taking heat for Harvey/dent he had a mental breakdown that happened b/c no batman. his hair; head and face grows out, barely talks, basically goes insane when he sees, or at least believes, he broke batman into retirement and can't stand it/stand being without him and A why he is not around or B like in this, he comes back when batman resurfaces in DKR. only now while still joker from dark knight, is also like the comics/Arkham, or at least suicide squad (2016) joker in terms of personality, mental capacity, and mannerisms. heck the Arkham staff could of, via plastic surgery, surgically fixed his face. By contacting and manipulation bane, he could get him to help him out of jail. When it is winter in gothum, the breakout could parody batman TAS Christmas with the Joker 1st scene. and he could get away with the wall blowing open, the ceiling or a window, or a/the wall with a rope and harness dropping down and joker strap in and a copper or plane like in Dar Knight china scene, gets away with him daggling from it. he could say something like, jingle bells, batman smells, Harvey dent is dead. the batmoblie lost a wheel/it's wheels and the joker got a waaayy. crashing out of jail, now I'm finally free, busting out I go, laughing all the weee ha ha haa. And all up till the he could be barely talking, and his visits could be alone with no one else but him and visitor. and phone conversations w/ visitors could be short, and “in code”. Plus how in Arkham asylum (2009) when he dances after breaking free, could have done similar when singing jingle bells. So his breakout and escape would be even more impactful. Even if the would recast it would/ might work b/c and option could be the surgery reshaped his entire face. Plus his voice could change,(recast or not) all to show how much of a phase he went through. Like joker is now a completely different person.

As someone who's seriously tired of the "Humans are evil and bad" message that gets repeated in media. I love this movie for the that it showed the beauty of human compassion. Neither side was happy about dying, but neither side wanted to kill the other either. "What were you trying to prove, that deep down everyone's as ugly as you?"

4:07 Interesting note: In the shooting script, the Joker says, "I brought him down to MY level," while in the completed film, he says "I brought him down to OUR level." I don't know if it was Heath Ledger or Christopher Nolan's idea to change the line on-set, but I like how the alteration makes Batman sound as if he were a partner in crime to Harvey's downfall. Let's take a moment to recognize an excellent performance at 1:10, by, you guessed it - Doug Ballard. The Businessman. I love the short arc of this character. He is the rational man. The smart man, the successful man, who knows how the world works and is proud to have earned his place in it. He makes the hard choices when nobody else will. (Note, his arc starts before this clip. But this clip shows the best part of his arc.) This man, at what he believes is the end, discovers that his humanity means more to him than his life. He did not know this until now. He sits down, saddened by his imminent demise, and perhaps disappointed that all his ideals of smart decisions and optimal outcomes were for naught when it came time to turn the key. But in death, while the name of the one with the most difficult choice would not be known, his sacrifice would still be legend in Gotham. Instead he lives. And his life will be richer for that choice.

When one thinks about it, The Joker and Batman are Yin and Yang. The Joker is evil and Batman is good. Neither can live if the other survives yet both are needed for ultimate survival. It is the great paradox in Batman. The Joker needs Batman to be completed, and Batman needs a villain. Batman can never stop because then he will be without purpose and will have nothing to channel his darkness onto. Joker can never stop because without the Dark Knight, he will have nothing left to live for. Both need the war of justice to continue. Batman: You'll be in a padded cell Joker: Maybe we can share one. Such an awesome exchange, i tell people all the time Batman is not a hero, he's just as insane as the villians he locks up.

He may not be a "hero" in the traditional sense but he isn't evil either.

Christian bales acting is underrated in this scnee delivering a serious line while doing the voice “what we’re you trying to prove? That deep down everyone’s as ugly as you? Your alone !”

"What were you trying to prove, that deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone." Remember that line the next time someone tries to hurt you.

Samar Fattouh Same here! I was going into 10th grade when I seen it in theatres, now I'm a senior in college. It's funny, I saw this movie 5 times in theatres lol. First time though was opening day, the 11 am showtime of it.

Ironic how Joker said "madness is like gravity and needs a push" when he's the one floating upside down. That ultimately defines Joker's pure insanity.

I always enjoyed how in Joker's last laugh he goes from angry to sad and they're unlike any other laughs he has in the entire film. He acts like it doesn't bother him that Gotham's citizens didn't play his game but it really did.
