Thank you, very informative video . I also have a 1996 era 550B, but just ordered the 550C upgrade kit . From looking at other videos, I think it's a good idea to hold the bullet to keep it straight up as you seat it, that way it will reduce any strain on the case neck if bullet was really leaning over as it goes into the seating die . Been loading pistol on a 550 for a few years. Now I'm going to start loading .223. Your vid is a great refresher on loading rifle cases. I like where you mention not going too fast because of the powder drop-not finishing before the case is pulled back out. Also checking the case for powder at station 3. I have a little led light velcroed and pointed right down at the case. Good stuff! Great basic tasks video of the 550. Thanks for sharing. Lastly, I gotta clean my bench!

Nice vid, two simple rules I follow with the Dillon. First never short-stroke the handle always complete the motion so you reduce the chance of double charging the case. Second, choose a powder no matter which caliber which fills the case at least 3/4 full that way if you double charge a case it will be spilling out of the case and you'll know you've screwed up. Dillon makes a powder checker as an option you can buy which should reduce the chance even more. I've only run a few thousand rounds a year through mine and with the noBS policy expect the press will outlast me.

On the subject of your flashlight. I have installed self adhesive strips of high intensity LED's on both inside uprights of my RL550B. I power them from a 12 volt wall wart. They provide an imense amount of light to check powder charge. Thanks for the great video.

Hey! Thanks for the support to my channel and the comment. I have always liked the powder that I used in the video. It shoots great. I love ball powders too. they measure very well. I havent had any troubles metering it at all on my Dillon. When I meter it in my Hornady powder measure it binds up at times. No real problems though. My targets hold a good group! all of your videos are very helpful. instead of a flashlight you should try a Inline led light system. the light mounts to your press with some two sided tape and plugs into the wall. Keeps your hand loading and press lit rather than having to stop and use the light. Plus they are relatively inexpensive (about $40).

Yes it’s is true with most if not all purpose made rifle powder if you double charge the case it will overflow all over the place. HOWEVER let’s say your doing some cast projectiles. And you found in a old reloading manual some data that’s like 7.0 to 9.0 grains. Then you look at it again and it’s a very fast powder like 700x. You better be making darned sure your paying attention to what your doing. Yes that type of data is extremely useful and economical as well as accurate. But it also has zero tolerance for any kind for mistakes. As a matter of fact in my personal opinion. Those types of recipes require individual attention. My point is do NOT ever rely on the powers case volume. Most veteran reloaders are all really well aware of this. This is for the new guys just getting into it.

Hornady has a little light strip out that you can stick on the inside of the press so you can see the powder easily without grabbing your flashlight....just lights up the whole inside of the shellplate!

Sounds like you may need to run a brush down through the case mouths to clear any debris. Possibly lube inside the case mouths a little bit more. What kind of lube are you using?

Muzzle velocity depend on the length of Barrel. For my reloading data. Im using 22.8 g vihtavouri 133 of my 20" barrel getting 2800 ft/sec. Give me 2" grouping at 300 meters.

Watching you trim, I assume you are aware that you are not reloading .223. You're reloading 5.56x45 which has pretty much the same external dimensions as the .223 but has a different case wall thickness. Glad you backed down the charge from the .223 because in general the 5.56 uses a slightly lower powder charge than the .223 for the same pressure/velocity. BTW, I purchased my RL 550B in 1993. It's still working like a champ thanks to Dillon's minor tweaks and noBS guarantee. I've got well more than 200,000 rounds through it.

Overall a great video with emphasis on safety tips where necessary. One critique is your misuse of the term bullet. You start off referring to the case as "brass" which is good. Then around 18:38 you call the brass a bullet and call the actual bullet the tip. You then refer to the completed cartridge as a bullet.

believe me, I understand many of these terms. in fact, I have a video on this exact topic. it's not released yet. when I film videos sometimes I use many different terms. sometimes I do this accidentally and other times I do this purposely. when I do it purposely it's used as a teaching tool for beginner reloaders. I do this sometimes because the terms that I might call things could be the same terms that a lot of general people that don't understand called them as well. in the case of this video I believe the terms were misused accidentally. sometimes I'll be in the middle of filming and can't think of the exact correct word at the time so I use an alternative word. thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a beautiful day!

Im pretty sure you would vomit and bleed from your eyes if you saw me behind my 550 lol. Some time in the tumbler is generally the extent of cleaning . Ive done tens of thousands of pistol rounds, (9mm, .40, .45, .38/357, and 460 mag, but .223 is going to be a new one. How important is case trimming compared to pistol ammunition? I have never trimmed any of my pistol ammo. 460 Im on round 3 and 4 and haven't trimmed without issues.

For the 223 did you have to get the conversion plate and did it come with the funnel for the powder????? Also with the same die set can you make the 556 form those dies.

the 223 kit comes with a shell plate, locator buttons and a powder funnel. you CAN use the 223 dies to load the 556, but make sure to double check your load data! the cases look alike, but are different and require different recipes.

I looked on the Hodgdon website too for that bullet and powder. They provide 3 loads ranging from 24 grains compressed to 27.5 compressed. In a previous single stage reloading video where you were doing more .223's, you mentioned you don't like to reload compressed. Did that change because of the Dillon ?

I think if you look closely at the Varget label, it says MAXIMUM LOADS - DO NOT EXCEED - REDUCE BY 10% TO START. So if the maximum load is 27.5 gr. and you reduce it by 10%, that's 24.75 gr, or ~25 gr.

I just bought one of these but am confused. Since u want to resize before u check for trimming when you resize do you take all the other dies out and after they are trimmed do you take the resizing die out of station one and just worry about priming.

Hi JJ Great video keep up the good work. I have a problem just got my 223 conversion kit and got it all set up When I place the 223 case in station one and start to raise it to be deprimed I have every time to guide the case into the die. it wobbles all over and I have to guide it in every time . it seems that the case is not stable in the 223 plate. can you help in any way. Wouldnt it be easier to just graught for half an hour and buy the shells from a shop? The national wage in America is 7.25 per hour, so half an hour (the length of this vid) graughting earns you $3.62. 22 shells of .223 calibre costs roughly $4, so, given you are already spending 30 minutes of time either way (graughting or reloading) you only have to pay 38 cents out of your own pocket if you buy them, would 38 cents pay for the bullets, primers, gunpowder, lubricant, plus their share of capital costs like presses, dies, grinders etc?

You should trim each time you reload dude, the whole point of trimming is that your brass stretches every... time... its... shot. Trimming reducing jams & problems. The process must be followed.
