This is why Bale is the greatest actor of all time, he goes from batman, to white boy cholo, to loosing like 100lbs in the machinist, then playing a magician, and then back to batman all in like 3 years lol

@@theoldbarrio9589 Holy shit, I'd almost forgot about that movie! Vice was fantastic, and Bale did a great job doing his thing where he seems to actually physically become the character he's playing. Many great actors get into their roles, but Bale goes a few steps farther by genetically modifying himself so the character becomes part of reality. Unless the role is a real person/historical figure, then it's more like some kinda self-cloning situation. Personally, I just think that Bale loses/gains absurd amounts of weight, becomes an actual drug addict (not verified), or whatever other crazy shit to find out if it's possible for anything to actually kill him. I bet in 3:10 To Yuma he told the prop guys to load Charlie Prince's revolver with live ammo because it would serve the scene better if he actually got shot like 6 times.

@@weshouser821I’m conflicted by this comment. 😂. On the one hand I’m like… yea but that’s pretty much most Christian Bale roles… I mean literally from Newsies to Batman to Ford vs Ferrari he plays characters that feel like “they might drag you into some bullshit” 😂😂😂. And than in this movie: he actually DOES drag his buddy into some bullshit. Like damn dude, I hope that $13/hr job is enough when they find your DNA all over that fucking car. Seriously, even at the end: Jim couldn’t help but bring his buddy down/endanger him. That’s what I think about most Ayer films, half the time the end and I’m like: what where you TRYING to say? Because I don’t think the takeaway matches the message… Sorry I’m kind of drunk 😂😂😂

After awhile though, it got old. Funny thing is nowadays he's got his shit together way better than any of our friends. Had a kid a straightened up, just like that. This character is for reals. I was a Marine infantrymen at the front end of the Iraq war. I was somewhat like this getting out and have a couple of friends who ended up in similar situations after separating. One ended up doing 7 years in prison after being involved with the cartel serving as an enforcer. The other got caught up in marijuana smuggling across the country but somehow got his charges dismissed. Dudes who come from this type of background without proper support after getting out end up going through an identity crisis and just end up going back to what they know as a way of quelling the dissonance that can drive you mad. Add in PTSD and the rage and aggression learned in training and solidified in combat and you wind up with a Jim. People have no idea how HARSH life can be. Pun intended

His portrayal of a special operations vet was on par. Anybody wanting to join the military in a combat role should watch this movie, because this is what you could become. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, it's the raw truth most people don't wanna hear, and I've seen it many times
@rs72098
@rs72098 8 ай бұрын
The problem is he forgot his military bearing. He acted worse than his friend who was a regular civilian. Perhaps it was related to his PTSD, but many vets forget the fundamental morals that made them who they are. You can be the greatest warrior, but if your morals aren't intact, you can fall by the wayside like all of your enemies.

It sucks but I agree. I think some people who have physical gifts and the gift of a certain moral “flexibility” get into that world without fully understanding what it really is. That life changes a person. And those changes aren’t always pretty. You can’t cross a river without getting wet. Thought the movie represented that very well. Bale killed it.

@@metalhead9315 Hell yeah! Freddy Rodriguez was so empathetic in this, because you could see his concern for his brother even as the strain began to weigh down from all the crazy shit Bale would do. If you like movies with dudes being bros I'd like to recommend They Look Like People, which is completely different from this one but has that same type of relationship with two guys being friends through some tough situations. It's got some horror elements, it's got tension, it's got a little romance but not too much, and it's got two lead actors you probably never heard of (nor have I) who are fucking fantastic.

Yo, I got a little story, one time in Texas. I was with my cousin and he was definitely lost in the cholo sauce. He was driving so reckless and I told him multiple times to chill out, and he was like “they going to have to chase us” we got pulled over we had dope on us. We both ended up having to go to jail, but at least he took the charges for the dope because it was his. but definitely was having me feel uneasy the whole ride. All I can say is try to stay away from reckless people because they will put you in a situation. You don’t want to be in. And I seen this movie it was pretty good and yeah, my cousin was kind of like that not so cruel as Christian Bale’s character, but definitely messed up in the head.

I love this movie. I consider it a guilty pleasure of mine. 9/10 for sure. First watched it in 2009 and immediately loved it. Watched it for the second time last night (14 years after first watching it) and loved it the same. I really enjoy Mike’s character. He’s conflicted. He seems to be a good guy deep down and wants to do right by Sylvia but keeps getting caught up in Jim’s crap. Jim is a dominant personality and Mike can’t seem to get away from that. The end scene where Mike runs home to find Sylvia packing and embraces her as he’s crying was moving. I also felt bad for Jim, even though he probably had it coming with all the crap he was getting into, I felt sad for him in the end. Almost like he was so mentally fucked up he just couldn’t help his actions. Great movie.

Also, yes those rounds would definitely go through that car like that. They would be 00 buck which is basically like 5-8 .380 rounds packed in a tube! Heavy buckshot ain’t no joke and will tear you up regardless if your a sick ass foo or not!

Dude you have to do Training Day some time. It's the undisputed masterpiece of the Ayerverse and Alonzo is maybe the sickest ass foo of them all. I know their isn't that much hispanic stuff in that movie but there is more than in American History X and you covered that movie.

Seeing as you’re on a David Ayer kick, do Street Kings next. It’s cool watching Keanu as a proto-John Wick before that movie came out.

I went and rewatched this movie after checking this review and i suddenly had the maculine urge to enact everything in this film (well besides the whole trying to kill your pregnant gf). This whole movie was just a big shock to me when i first saw it years ago but just forgot about it until now and i have to say this is a street classic. From the Turkey Baster scene, to the Bar scene and ultimately to the tragic ending, it keeps you on the edge the whole time and really makes you glad you aint fudging around being a malandro like Jim, even tho cruising and smoking in L.A. while wearing suits, does sound like a good time.

thanks for covering this film. There's a lot of relevance to the crazy ptsd, civilian assimilation i thought was interesting. Also how Bale plays another unhinged chameleon with charisma to keep himself afloat in society. Suprised the movie hasnt been reviewed more

I'm a gun nut so I'll go into it...lights are hollow, a very thin layer of aluminum or fiberglass or even plastic covers the back, then after its all cloth and plywood, old man used buckshot so tbh it is possible but very unlikely at the range the old man was at for all the pellets to hit so perfectly...but plausible I'd believe it if I saw or heard it...but if it was a slug round or even slug magnum I'd believe it wayyyy more
@theoldbarrio9589

Good catch/argument also it looked like the old man’s shotty was a street sweeper so the barrel length wouldn’t Ben that long, making the velocity even less able to penetrate

The p series pistol they get in this movie is an iconic pistol from the 80s. I have that same pistol just because of all the movies it was in and sentimental value as it was the first gun I ever shot. I absolutely love it and it gets plenty of attention whenever I take it to a range
