One of my favorite episodes, too (among many, of course - "Citizen's Ar-resst!!") The most touching moment for me was after he had been so hard on Opie, a frustrated Andy was wandering around the woods where Opie had shown him where he had met Mr. McBeevee. Andy throws down something he had picked up off the ground and exclaims, "Mis-ter Mac-Beevee!" From the treetops comes a a jingling and the voice of Mr. McBeevee responding. The look on Andy's face as, with open mouth, he slowly lifts his eyes into the treetops speaks volumes. Not only was his face expressing, "I don't believe it!", but, in that same instant, out from almost a single frame of film came pouring a look expressing a love for and a pride in his son, Opie. That man, Andy Griffith, could act! Then came that beautiful, wide Andy Taylor grin... Thanks, guys, for the mem'ries of The Good Stuff!

Gotta love 'The Pickle Story', but yeah, there are so many that could be mentioned. These are very talented actors and writers, who didn't need profanity, half naked women, sex and death to entertain. Many young people today just don't get how funny this stuff is: "Bye, Aunt Bee! I'm leaving on my trip to my cousin's house!" LOL!

@@scottmcman7659 while I agree with you, you have to admit the episode where the boys have to hold a female prisoner overnight, that the silhouette she left behind the sheet hanging in front of the cell could put impure thoughts in a man's head.

@@johnharris7751 - It could, but not now. Today, that wouldn't even cause a teenager to look up. However, that girl had "it". When a woman has that special something that can make you instantly fall in love, that's when it becomes dangerous. In fact, she almost broke Andy. Frankly, within an hour of taking her in, I'd be letting her out. LOL! Her: I just need some fresh air. Let me out to walk around a little and I'll come right back. So now it's a treasure that brings back memories of Family.I too grew into the Marine Corps and the DI's were frightened of me. Not a Gomer Pile here. I would think of Andy Griffith in Nam. I find the Mr. McBeevee episode very powerful as it illustrates how smart the writers and Andy Griffith were throughout the early part of the series. Andy was a faith-based man but the show was being broadcast to a broad secular audience therefore, the messages they wished to convey (the golden rule, honoring the ten commandments, why Andy did not wear his gun overtly, etc.) had to be indirectly addressed as the values of the character without explicitly calling out a specific religion as his guide / belief system. Notice how the Andy character treats those who would otherwise be judged harshly by the public-at-large (Otis, the mayor, the main store owner, Ernest T. Bass, etc.). The episode: Ron Howard had the hardest part in the episode: 1) Convey the innocence and magic of youth, 2) Demonstrate through taught values that honesty to his family was more important than anything else - anything, 3) Maintain faith that his father's love and belief in him was boundless and his honesty to his dad could not be traded for short-term-relief. The scene where Andy is in the woods struggling with the challenge of maintaining his faith in his son (when all signs point to a breakdown in trust between father and son) has elements of scripture tied to the moment BUT as this is light comedy Mr. McBeevee emerging as he did was the climax of the episode. Excellent writing where one feels it was a time and place when 'the Better Angels of Our Nature'. were on display. Thanks for sharing....

@@jdsundstrom I enjoy your channel very much as you provided a curated glimpse into a TV world that shaped us as kids and in many ways educated young parents needing an example to model. The references to your childhood in your videos point to a time / place when parents attempted to balance the values they wished to instill in their homes against the values presented on TV (a tricky balance). Sometime in the future, maybe you can have a Mayberry Memories podcast on 'Opie and the Spoiled Kid' as it aired 57 years ago. It's hard for me to grasp how young actor Ronnie Darpo (Arnold) could play such an intense role at such a young age and never break character in his scenes. The father played by Harlan Warde had an acting CV others would envy. Certain lines in a performance never escape a person: "If we don't teach children how to act in society today, how are they going to act when they grow up?" - Andy Taylor 1963. Thanks to you and your brother.... P.S.: I have it on good authority Arnold Winkler was seen at his local Target last month berating a clerk at the register because he was limited to only two packs of TP and was overheard shouting 'he had to have it (6 packs)'. 😡

One of my top favorite Andy Griffith Show episodes. What really makes Andy’s faith in Opie really special is that he doesn’t punish Opie even though the boy wasn’t able to produce/introduce Mr. McBeevee out in the woods to his father. Mr. McBeevee wasn’t there to explain about the ax or the quarter. The ending was extra special when Andy goes back to the woods and frustratedly calls out “Mr. McBeevee” and Mr. McBeevee answers him while climbing down the telephone pole. I always got a little tug on my heartstrings. 🥰

But as always, Ernest T. Bass tries to mess things up and plans to kidnap the bride. Andy came up with a brilliant plan, which was to have Barney dress up as the bride and be the decoy. As the wedding ceremony began, Ernest T. kidnaps who he thinks is Charlene. Great as always Dave. There is one thing that really annoys me about the airing of these shows and it seems TAGS is one that suffers a lot from this. I don't know if it's greed or what, but IMO, they cut the episodes down too much to make space for more commercials. It may seem strange, but I'm an old timer who prefers to watch these shows on regular TV. Probably because that's what I had for most of my life. However, cable channels and networks really take advantage and those who've never seen these shows, are getting cheated out of footage that IMO is important to the episodes they are cut from and I noticed that it's especially bad with TAGS. Of course, I've seen them so many times, I know when a scene is cut out and it's very irritating. That said, I wonder if anyone else notices this?

Stopped the video early to go watch the episode on Amazon. Hadn't seen it before so was glad I missed the spoilers. Such a tense moment between the two actors and I really expected the worst, considering the era. Not only did it speak well of Andy's character, but Opie's too. At that young age especially, it's easier to simply do what you're told when you're afraid. And Andy seeing Opie stick to his guns even in the face of that fear is what really changed his mind, that punishing him would've gone against all the values he'd worked to instill in him.
