I have replaced the agitator part 3 years ago, and I have to again now in 2023. I have a whirlpool, same design, and I’m trying to figure out how to keep it from stripping the metal out of the agitator. My wife and I discovered we would have been better off with an actual agitator and not the impeller type, we need that more aggressive agitator for our work and day to day clothes.

My Maytag seems to have a great design that doesn't allow coins to fall below the wash plate. I noticed a penny fall in the gap at the bottom of the tub and worried that I might have to remove the plate. Then found several more coins stuck in the gap. I got all but one out using a wire but a dime wouldn't come out. Tried a shop vac, and magic. Sucked that coin right out of there. Glad I could get them out but there is no guarantee that none have fallen below in the past.

I worked a coat hanger under the plate, it still wouldn’t budge. My son was lifting the whole machine up when pulling on it, wouldn’t come apart. We tapped on the center too, no good. I saw another video that they destroyed the wash plate, then used a gear puller on the remaining metal piece that was still rusted to the splined shaft. I’m thinking I’m going to have to do that, I ordered a wash plate already.

Get some PB Blaster and give it 2 good shots, let stand for 5mins and repeat. The bolt screws into the end of the transmission shaft For the wash plate removal I used 2 cotter key removal tools, AKA hook tools for us autoglass folks, and pushed into the holes on opposite sides and gently pull up while vigorously moving the plate back and forth. Popped right out. I think it worked because the splines were not exactly aligned, as one side was almost smooth, with the splines on the transmission shaft.
