Nice job! I think I'd start with Boeshield Rust Free to reduce the iron oxide (just because I keep it in my shop), then onto sanding and paste waxing, just like you did. Rust Free would work well in your miter slots, but would still require a bronze wire wheel (softer than iron, harder than rust).

Hello. I used spray nine between passes to degrease the surface. I did this to increase the life of my sandpaper.
