This was a mashup out of 4 songs (one is not in the title) "I shot the sheriff" from bob marley, obviously, "Road to Zion" which is from Damian Marley and after that they did a little section of the song a "little bit of luck" from DJ Luck & MC Neat and the last song is "Hip Hop" from the rap group Dead Prez. While ending it on the riff from I shot the sheriff again at the end.

Just as another layer, each song relates to Bob Marley in some way. I Shot the Sheriff, of course, is a Bob Marley favorite. Road to Zion is by Damian Marley, Bob Marley's son. A Little Bit of Luck is cheeky. It was originally by DJ Luck & MC Neat (and later sampled by Bugzy Malone). It doesn't draw from Bob Marley at all, but, of course, Marley did have a song, Help Me Make It Through the Night. Finally, Dead Prez use a Bob Marley quote, "one thing 'bout music, when it hit you feel no pain" to open Hip Hop.

ThisThisThis. This performance would be astounding enough, completely legitimate for fans to lose their shit over in the years after its upload... ... but then it becomes apparent that they have significant room to play around in with it, and are super attuned to Ren's bandleading. The only misstep is that Gorran missed the cue to head back into the Sheriff riff at the end of Hip Hop, and they "had" to repeat it to close the song out with the guitars in proper unison. Just an absolute masterclass in existing within the music together. On top of Ren's killer vocals.

I love how he manages to put his own sauce on a cover so it doesn't sound like the original, and yet it sounds so much like the original. I have no idea how he does it (or how to articulate it, lol). Thank you. I think the thing that will help Ren most is actually exactly this - keeping reactions going and his name in people's consciousness whether he can release new content for a while or not. It would be so sad if he lost momentum yet again. And singing reactions serve every bit as well as rap, since he intends his next album to be singing. As for the scatting, I can't remember whose reaction it's on since I have watched sooo many in such a short amount of time, but Ren commented to someone saying he didn't actually ever memorize that verse of Road to Zion and he just sang something he thought loosely resembled words 😂 I'm not sure that's the entire explanation, though, because it's something he also does in many many other situations. Definitely a natural part of his flow state!

"He's good at being interesting ...for humans." Well, not just humans. One of his busking videos shows a dog walk up and sit in front of him to watch/listen. It's sooo funny. You know those videos of people going out to fields to play an instrument and out of nowhere comes a stampede of nearby sheep or elephants or geese (or other animals)? I think Ren could do the same. I told them they had to check Hi Ren out next!! Hah! I just hope he knows he shares joy with my feathered dogs, too!!❤😃

You'll find as you dig deeper into the Big Push that all their covers are creative - Fatboy Slim's Praise You being a prime example. Just think about it for a second - 4 friends with varying musical backgrounds having the time of their lives playing purely for the love of the music. You can see the joy radiate out - for me this is Ren at his happiest. The band are so tight and skilled and as you see here and elsewhere, they swap the arrangements around seamlessly on the fly. No two performances are ever the same. This "red suspenders" set is a real go to for Renegades and gets more wild as it goes on, Also should be pointed out that their covers are great but their original songs are equally as good if not better - the band is just that damn good.

His vocals are great but I think this is a guitar tour de force. That intro is just butter. Some blues, some jazz, the obvious reggae notes…there’s one point where he does what I’m pretty sure is an adlib run and you think it’s gonna end but it just keeps roaming around the fretboard. And then in the “sheriff John Brown” section, he’s duetting with himself on guitar. He is well proficient at that choppy staccato rhythm for reggae. Then picks up the pace for ska and dub! All while singing. Big shoutout to Romain Axisa on lead who just exudes such joy.

This video - the first time I saw it, it just had a new and totally unexpected and gorgeous surprise around every corner, just delight after delight after astonishing delight, and at that point, I think I had probably not laughed freely and deeply, out loud like I did, in probably three years. (It's been a very rough few years.) I've lived in a number of places all over the world, plenty with active "street music" or "pub music" scenes, but I've never seen busking crowds like this. And I've certainly seen and heard some transcendent musical performances across so many genres. But the Big Push? It would take too long to try to articulate how this serves up something that just clicks in all the crazy eclectic right places for me, and the attempt would be insufficient anyway, but I come back to watch this one all the time. It just feels epic, maybe even historic, to me. They were on freakin fire that day.
