The issue is the price. What did an entry level iMac cost a few weeks ago? This is that product, redesigned and significantly downgraded, for how much? Apple gear is great, this display is great, but this price, by Apple’s own standards, is just wrong
@StrangerNoises2 жыл бұрын
I am getting one. Hopefully arriving this week. The price is a bit mad when you compare with that of the low-end Intel 5K iMacs, but relative to the Ultrafine 5K, it's easily $300 better than that (and here in Europe it's wholly discontinued anyway, so it's not an option). But it's what I've always wanted, and no-one else is making anything like it, so I kinda have to get one now. 😀 Pixel density is everything. Wish Dell was making one... (I'd actually really have liked standalone versions of the 4.5K screen in 24" iMacs. I might have got two of those. But I reckon if that was coming at all it would have been announced at the same time, and we'd be talking now about the Studio Display 24 and Studio Display 27.)

I'm not getting one, the price / performance just isn't there. This is a 'STUDIO' display and therefore meant for professionals and it doesn't meet many professional requirements. The advances in display tech including; 10 bit colour depth, colour consistency, HDR, local dimming, higher refresh rates etc.... all add up to make real benefits for a professional user, just comparing it to a MacBook pro xdr pro-motion display shows this only too well, especially when your looking at a display 8+ hours a day, every day! No, What this is, is a really really nice home monitor for non-professionals and I'm sure apple knows this. Why have centerstage on a business monitor! The last thing you want in a business environment is the camera panning around an office showing things it shouldn't, you need that cam fixed on you and only you! I'd love you to do a large comparison of displays with 4K USB-C monitors, the likes of BenQ, Dell, Huawei, and many others, to see if there is an up to date option at the same or lower cost than the Apple studio display (enough of the 5K LG UltraFine comparisons) which is basically the same monitor.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

Excellent review. I think you hit it on the head that Apple is prioritizing the Centerstage functionality over a sharper - but static - webcam. I’m not sure that was the best play on a non-portable device, tho. I love Centerstage on my iPad Pro because I can set it anywhere and the camera just centers on me. But a big 27" display? It is just always going to be planted directly in front of my chair. Who is using a Studio Display while cooking dinner or working in the garage?
@incredibilistic2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I could see the M1 iMac having Center Stage but the Studio Display seems to be more for pro environments, who are people that are less likely to want or even care about such a feature since they'll more than likely be working solo anyway. To borrow a phrase from Brian Tong, it's a "bad apple" when Apple's charging $1,600 for a display with a "meh" web cam. That said, if the web cam was pixel and picture perfect and the adjustable stand wasn't a $400 premium, few if any would have an issue. In a perfect world the Studio Display would be $999 with a $400 stand option that has both height adjustment and rotation. Or charge $1,599 with all of that and $999 for a VESA-only option. I don't often scoff at Apple's pricing schema because I believe in the value they bring over competitive products and while I have every intention of buying the Studio Display and a Mac Studio I'm not thrilled about the Studio Display's price. I feel like this is one product Apple could've priced lower and still made a killing on.

On Friday, I visited my local Apple Store and had "eyes on" time with the Studio Display. Because they were out of stock, I could not take one home with me at that time. But when I returned home, I did go online and placed an order for the $1600 model. It should arrive around April 11th. Would I have enjoyed Pro Motion capability? Absolutely. (Personally, I value Pro Motion capability above HDR capability on the desirability scale - especially on a display with a sustained 600 nit brightness level rating.) Still, I mainly deal in photography and image editing and processing so 60 Hz is perfectly acceptable to me in a display. What I do insist on is clarity, sharpness and color accuracy characteristics in a display and the Studio Display has those qualities in "spades".

I am super on the fence on this. I did order the Studio Display two weeks ago and it is supposed to ship soon. While I have been waiting, I have been checking out reviews and alternatives. On specs, there seems like there are so many "good enough" options (LG, Dell, etc). I did go out and have a look at those and in-person with my own eyes it is clear that there is a huge difference in monitors. Not that the alternatives are bad, but they are not that good. Plastic bodies and displays that are "okay". While cheaper, a close to $1000 display with not great graphics is disappointing. The Studio Display costs more, but it is a far superior product. I have and love the display on the new MacBook Pro (it is stunning!) so my eyes are used to really good displays. Hypothetically, if Apple did release an LED, blah, blah, blah (closer to the MacBook Pro display, but in 27 or 32 inches) I don't think I could justify the price. While there is a lot to knock, I think this display is going to be a perfect compliment to my workflow for music, photography and video production.

The truth that is not being said here is that consumers asked for that half a decade ago… the monitor improvements to the 5K mac are the lowest bar Apple has probably ever strived to reach. No one is asking for older technology, I promise. The justification that Apple nerds will buy this because they don’t want to own outside of Apple is also a lazy excuse, I’m sure Apple is expecting this monitor to sell to mainstream, treat it as such compared to the rest of the competition. Some new (not new monitor related) features were added… that’s fine. One is a hit (speakers), one is a miss (webcam) and one is cool to have but also why, in the grand scheme? (A13 processor). $1,599… an insane price for a bare minimum monitor revisit, with a few sprinkles of side tech. It’s sad to even anticipate the mini LEDs market price if this is Apple’s low tier monitor. A side note: Trying to make consumers happy about their purchase, rather than lean into a product’s shortcomings at Apple’s price points, doesn’t really help technology get pushed forward. Also, trying to convey that no matter the tech inside, you’re always going to want something better anyway, is another quick dismissal at an otherwise opportune moment to judge a product off it’s real value compared to what’s being advertised and sold to hard earning consumers. 🤷🏻♂️
@ReneRitchie2 жыл бұрын
Nothing has changed in 6 years though. There haven't been any monitor improvements that would meaningful for this spec at this price. You still can't transit high frame rate over Thunderbolt 4, and at 600 nits, you're getting better HDR than many so-called HDR panels, and to get better you'd need OLED or Mini-LED which no one has marketed at 5K yet... so?
@winky2252 жыл бұрын
@@ReneRitchie respectfully, those are all constraints that I understand and do not know how to solve. Apple chose to not solve those issues here either. So if they can’t because “current capabilities” then that’s fine but should charging $300 more for 2/3s of better features along with 600 nits be the answer? Also, I can’t stress enough how the quality of that webcam, as it stands, can be included in the conversation of “look, they added more than just screen” to justify the price. My larger question to this product is why does it exist if a better version from Apple is on the way soonish (according to rumors), and at this price point? It’s overpriced. The sad thing is that consumers will look at the Studio Display as a bargain when they see the “Studio Display Pro” and what it costs, bringing in the real features everyone (including Apple nerds) wants today not 5 years ago. Which when looking at it from a sobering point of view, explains why the Studio Display exists. Just to see how far they can push it when keeping those prices high, and creating new product categories. It’s not solely because “Apple wants to use premium parts and features” to justify their prices in this case, isn’t it? 😕

*Most professional film makers who are working in the day to day commercial, cable TV Network, and industrial/freelance sector don't work in an HDR workflow. HDR is still pretty much considered to be a (specialty) delivery - special order type of production. The majority of work is still acquired and delivered in a Rec.709 image workspace. Even at best, HLG is the prefered route, since it can be derived from Rec. 709 sources and re-processed by shooting in a special Rec.709 Log. This is why it's called (Hybrid) (Log) Gamma. You acquire in a standard Rec. 709 and produce and deliver a compatible delivery which behaves almost identically to an HDR Gamma Curve. Also, given it has an A13 chip in it, I think it would be cool if they put tvOS on the Studio Display. It would make a cool little Apple Tv display to use from time to time and would have a nice level of integration between the color calibration, movies, and dolby atmos/spatial audio. Its interesting because at first I thought this display was absurd being priced at 1600, but now that Ive looked around at all the other displays available, it is difficult to find a display of the quality of the studio display at 600 nits at all. Most monitors top out at only 350-400 nits. The specs of the monitor don't jump off the screen, but if you've used one of the recent iMac displays(then add 100 nits brightness) you would understand how much higher quality those displays are versus the other monitors on the market.

@@codechannel528 The non-removable power cord makes it much harder to move the monitor if the cord is, say, zip-tied to the desk. With a normal monitor, the user can unplug the power cord, move the monitor, and use a new one at the new location. With this design, that becomes impossible. I agree that power cords rarely fail, but, in this case, the design makes the product unnecessarily inconvenient to use, with zero benefit for the user.

I think a big and fair complaint is lack of compatibility outside of the apple ecosystem. The lack of other inputs or full support for Windows/Linux machines makes this monitor not only less flexible (even for users with multiple devices) but less sustainable as it requires users to have multiple displays for things like consoles or second machines, and will be less useful to non-apple users at the end of its life. This combined with the pseudo-non-removable cable really isn't a good look for apple. It's the thing I dislike most with current apple. Theyre all for sustainability where it benefits them, but when it's people questioning why they need an M1 iPad AND an M1 Mac to run final cut and procreate, sustainability stops mattering. They're actively making products worse and less sustainable to facilitate their ecosystem

I don't really get the hate for this monitor. There are few if any competitors in the 5k range the most notably the LG Ultrafine 5K but it has been very iffy quality wise. I can tell you Apple has probably procured the top spec and tightest tolerance panels of the 5K, quite possibly made adjustments to power supplies and most definitely in firmware. Put it in a better enclosure added better speakers and webcam and really for the price, quite possibly due to having LG make the Ultrafine for the Mac having to price it slightly higher due to a competion clause in a contract. Everyone wants it to be a 32" 5K mini LED with 120HZ refresh rate with all the bell and whistles in the same or bezel less enclosure but the cheapest monitor with those specs is $2600 Can. If I was just a average person or a photo or print professional I would have no problem shelling out the $$$ for it. But I had mine next to my 5K iMac, in the "Looks like 2560 x 1440" scaled mode so it matched... and it's blurry. Headache-inducingly blurry. I can only use it as a second "glance-across" screen, and pull windows to the main one to actually pay attention to it. In the end I couldn't stand it (and besides I'd bought a 14" MBP) and am now using a Dell P2415Q in preference. That is 4K at 24", which is still not full "retina" resolution, but it's closer. Which is probably why no-one makes 4K screens at that size any more. On that screen macOS actually offers a "Looks like 2304 x 1296" scaled mode which has the right metrics and still looks reasonably sharp. That's why I'd have been equally happy with the 4.5K screen from the iMac 24. (Especially if it cost a bit less!) Pixel density. Is. Everything 😀 But seriously it's obvious people have priorities based on what they want to use it for, and what their own eyesight is like. For some, colour accuracy is critical, and P3 SDR is not sufficient; for some, high refresh rates are critical and 60Hz is just ridiculously antiquated. For me, and probably everyone else buying it like someone who's staggered across the desert to fall at the shore of an oasis, it's pixel density, and no-one else is doing it. Price - you could buy a whole computer (imac 5k base model for 1750 usd), it’s an old panel with old tech so it should cost around 800-1000 usd just for the screen. It’s not a bad consumer choice but it’s only good for sdr - rec 709, srgb content creation. Color work - It doesn’t cover adobe rgb for photography, it’s not accurate for dci-p3. It has the spec on the paper but I had to replace the panel 3x in my imac due to not even colors and eventually I gave up. It wasn’t bad for content consumption but it’s not good for critical work, even on basic lvl. No colorist would even think about using for work in dci-p3. It’s only good for viewing material to estimate general look not for accurate work. 5k res is nice though. Since it’s cheap old tech that apple used for many years it should be the choice for people who have basic needs like developers, music producers, basic content creators for around 800-1000 usd. It should be a complementary device for mac mini. For 1500-2000 usd they should offer a hdr screen 800 nits (maybe oled panel), 10 bit, 27 inch 5k. Something like lg c1 panel but with more ppi and 27 inch. That would be good complementary screen for macbook pro with mini led and iphone pro which shoot hdr video. Pro display xdr will be upgraded soon. It’s bigger, brighter and has bigger color accuracy so it’s still a different league.

You can shoot HDR on iphone 13 mini (699$), you can edit it on macbook pro 14 (2000$) but to view your content on a bigger screen you need to pay 6000$.... that's why I'm disappointed. Next one would be Apple Studio Display 27 inch with HDR for 1600-2000$ and in the end would be Pro Display 32 inch 6K HDR with better specs like less blooming. So OK, lets sacrifice a little resolution for Budgets sake… Then we hit thee Brightness question… 500nit seems to be the industry standard, that’s about 20% darker so we re now looking at bother 20% less resolution, and 20% less brightness. Next check color accuracy yah it can be found, But at this point you are looking at monitors that are generally starting at $1300.00 and are still 20% less. Seriously if you want something that is legitimately competitive with the studio monitor on Features you are looking at things that cost about $2000.00 and then their speakers flat out suck if they have any, and a camera? The LG display in the Studio Display is just a stop gap.That will be fixed with so to be released Thunderbolt 5. It seems pretty clear Apple intended to use a Pro-Motion variable rate mini-dot LED in the 27" Studio display - with multiple some solid sources saying the panel is already in production. The issue is as you mentioned Thunderbolt 4 doesn't support a 27" display running at 120hz. so impossible with Thunderbolt 4. However, a 27" iMac COULD use the mini-dot display, because the display would connect directed without Thunderbolt. But then, Apple would have an iMac with an awesome display - while the Studio display is stuck with an 8 year old 60hz LG panel with no local dimming, good but rather doggy when compared to a great mini-dot display (similar in quality to the one's being now used in the 14" and 16" MacBooks). Obviously, that would attract a lot negative criticism when the eye popping mini-dot iMac is compared to the old LG panel Studio Display - so Apple had no choice; use the old LG panel and delay the 27" iMac. As you said, the problem with the Thunderbolt 4's 60hz limit gets solved with Thunderbolt 5 which has double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4. Last week Intel's CEO accidentally leaked that Thunderbolt 5 spec was resolved when his tweet from Intel's Israel based Thunderbolt lab showed a poster on the wall with the final Thunderbolt 5 spec. That tweet was quickly deleted but not before it was screen shot. Apple HAD planned to have Intel 5 in this generation of Macs but Intel was (as always) a year behind. So, for the fall update, look for M2 chip upgrade, Thunderbolt 5 upgrade, Studio Display with upgraded with variable rate mini-dot panel, 27" mini-dot display iMac, and Mac Mini M2 Pro.

I'm happy I found this video! I bought an Apple Studio Display and a 2023 M2 MacBook Pro with 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display. The whites on both displays are completely off: more red on the Studio Display, and more yellow on the MBP. When I compare with all the iPhones and iPads in the house, NOTHING looks alike. I'm curious: which Reference Mode are you using on your Studio Display? The default Apple Display (P3- 600 nits)? If so, are you using True Tone? If not, don't you feel like its D65 White Point is way too blue/red? If you're not using its default Reference Mode, which one are you using? Design & Print (P3-D50)? Photography (P3-D65)? Did you calibrate your Studio Display? If so, what device did you use? I bought the ColorChecker Display Pro, but I can't use it on my MBP because it's XDR! I've been living a pure 6000$ CAD nightmare for a month now. Please help! Thank you!
