Use the rock from pulling down the dividing walls for terrace paving. Make the stys into little grottos with lights inside, create a shade sail structure and build a demountable structure like a tent / glam ping experience. Less permit requirements. Outdoor bath. Composting toilet. Wildflowers. Garden fairy lights and lanterns. Magical.

They would make a beautiful garden or seating area. Ideally, it would make things easier if you could take out dividing walls between the pigsties so there is a better flow. Love the idea of a walled vegetable garden with seating area.

Wonderful episode! I just finished a renovation in Umbria and was stunned to find out recently that after a year of following all the exacting rules to qualify for the refunds, I would not get any money back. A list of acceptable amounts for each work had been instituted after the fact which disqualified all my renovation, at least for the cash refund. I am happy to hear that people are protesting because it seems a betrayal of peoples trust to offer this carrot to get old buildings restored, and then not come through as promised. As to the pigsty, it is so charming in its rustic state. Using the spaces outdoors for walled gardens and sitting areas, and the interior for storing tools, maybe a little workshop if height allows, and bypassing anything than involves permissions seems a good short term use. The unrenovated ruin!

How dreadful for you, good for people protesting, we need more protests in the world. It is cruel to think that rules are made and then changed just like that. This ‘control’ needs to be stopped for sure. Best wishes.

Oh Kylie, we are sad that your parents are leaving, too! We wish them safe, safe travels. Regarding the pig sties, I DO think various gardens in each site would be a great idea, plus (hopefully) no major, major construction necessary. The sites are really beautiful as they are...they look fantastic since they've been cleared off! I'm really so sorry about the delays with the chicken coop property. We will keep our fingers tightly crossed here in Maine, that things get back on track soon! Thank you for another beautiful episode! ox!

What about making the pigsty into a greenhouse and have the end unit as a little place to have tea or aperitifs in the evening or morning and then have the other exterior walled areas as gardens for vegetables…and berries and flowers. The interior space you can set up as your greenhouse and have an area for seedlings, a sink and hose for watering and a table for preparation etc. I think that would be lovely. If it gets full west Sun you might have to think about awnings to protect certain areas.

Turning the pigsties into walled and terraced gardens with a spot to read or just enjoy nature would be lovely, but unless you have running water at that location it will be a real chore to maintain. Highly recommend employing a drip line setup if you choose to create gardens. Also, using those walls as a starting point, you could create a cold frame to start cool weather crops, and use the inside of the sty (providing it’s dry and cool) to store onions, garlic and potatoes, etc.

Kylie, I have so enjoyed your videos. On the pigsties can you add rebar rods and cement around the stones to complete the walls. The rebar will give a strong base adding the cement and building the wall with the stones you already have this will preserve the incredible beauty of the Italian stones. Create a open roof with weather proof material and beautiful flowering vines and string lighting. You did not show the central area of the pigsties. Is that one solid room or separated into rooms? Can the area be used as a tea garden. I realize afternoon tea is very English, but the area can be used with small herb garden with small tea tables in each area. Or wine and, olive oil tasting your wonderful baked bread. With the chicken coop it appears that the primary foundation is set. Call the plumber and have them finish the area. All of the open areas fill with ceiling to floor windows with interior curtains for privacy. Finish the area on your own if that is possible. if you want to use this as a weekend getaway use the open floor plan and decorate. Get it up and going. As the area produces more income add more elements. I think you have really done a beautiful job on the renovations. Arrivederci

A pretty seating area in a walled in flower and herb garden, with climbing roses and hollyhocks against the stone walls, would be amazing. - And yes, make an opening in the midle wall, to connect the two garden rooms. I would suggest clearing out all weeds, putting down a good weed membrane, and then raking out gravel on top. Then, you can plant things by cutting an X in the membrane, and plant roses and lavender. A beautiful climbing rose arching over a stone doorway would look so romantic! Also, butterfly friendly plants, like Agastache and Echinacea, would add colour and 'flutter'.

Absolutly wonderful work and the land makes the heart sing so very enchanting. Olive leaf is medicinal and is sold here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as a medicinal supplement : reduces cardiovascular risk, like atherosclerosis. lowers blood pressure, helps treats type 2 diabetes, supports weight loss, eliminates free radicals, also boosts immunity and reduces inflammation. You are in paradise to the best of earthly capacity. Blessings to you and all of your loved ones. Kara

I loved this week’s content - I could have watched this for hours. I love this kind of work so much - it’s immediate gratification. So sorry for the bureaucracy nightmare. As to the pig sty - I can see a pergola coming off the existing “roof” over the stalls and covering the open sections out front. Wooden and open and if there were electricity, strings of lights. If not, tables with lanterns for the evenings. Perhaps if you put a new roof over the stall part, you could have rooftop container gardens with herbs, veggies, lavender etc and below tables and potted lemon trees, etc Use the stones to repair the walls. Keep filming beautiful Kylie and hopefully your amazing parents will return soon.

Another thought - also you could use the stones to build a sort of firepit/grill there so you could cook fish with the olive branches burning underneath, etc. it would add to the atmosphere as well as be functional

Re purposing the stones and bricks is the best idea. The stones and bricks are beautiful, you could take it all down and use them to build raised garden beds elsewhere, long lasting usefulness in that idea. Vegetable/herb garden beds created from those beautiful old materials would be gorgeous even if nothing was growing in it.

Like pearls on a string our fortunes do swing. Once shiny and bright, they turn black as night. But nothing does last and soon will be past. As long as we last, we learn from our past and tend to just swing like pearls on a string. All of your hard work will pay off eventually and all of the buildings will find their purpose. With a little patience even miracles might happen. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻😊

Kylie, I just love everything you do! I can literally feel the sunshine and smell the plants! You are so talented. Why don't you set up maybe weekend art classes where people can come and paint the views from the little pigsties? You could fill the edges in beautiful plants and flowers with cute tables and set up picnics for them too. A whole day package and get yourself on Trip Advisor or ask hotels to offer it with concierge service. I would absolutely pay to come do that if I was a tourist. It could be an art class + flowers creation + picnic + maybe a 'film class' + apero and then they leave. Good luck in all you do. For one, my Fridays are now even more fun when I see the videos. Thank you for the happy feelings!!! ps re money and budgets, you have to think in abundance mindset to attract money. eg 'I'm so looking forward to more money coming in', 'I love how things are always working out for us'' etc etc etc. The mood and emotional set point attracts the money, easy life etc etc etc. hope this makes sense. It does work. ciao

I love the garden and tea space ideas for the pig sties. Maybe you could put glass windows and roof around one of them and create a small green house for your seedlings or winter growing, or even to create a warm winter space to sit on those colder winter days. I'm really enjoying watching your adventures. About 15 years ago, my husband and I began building our own homestead, with our own hands. It was a very different type of structure, (cordwood with a living roof) so we were always uncertain if things would get approved or if we would have to scrap the whole project. But, now we've been in our home for 13 years and it brings us so much joy. I wish you luck and love with your journey!

Kylie, your stamina is incredible! I am constantly on a farm, my Mom's property here in Puerto Rico, it's seven acres, and upkeeping a property is NOT easy. People want to romanticize these things but it really is a lot of work. Very satisfying, yes, once you get things done. My brother-in-law is planting exotic root plant right now called yautia. (Some of the readers here might know what that is.) It'll take a few months before everything grows and be able to be sold to the market. God has blessed you wonderfully. Thank you for showing us such excellent footage of the tasks you and Guido do. I wish your parents God speed.

You could get a bank loan and create a little agritourism boutique hotel, with little guest houses. Definitely keep the stone walls and the traditional beauty of these little apartments, this is what people who go on holidays in Italy are looking for. Since you have the church, it could also serve as a venue of weddings and other events. It is doable, and you will have your own business in your backyard with travelers from around the world.

Love the idea of a garden in the pigsties. Was also thinking about not changing the structure but building big windows on the walls. So you would have like a epic green house. Or if you would want to make it Liveable like a Wintergarden for tea time and reading. Laying cables for electricity and water underground connected to the main house or the nearest power source. But keeping it just with the necessity’s for a garden Or if you become a millionaire in the near future turn every little compartment into a spa . One for the sauna , on for a shower place a cold plunge and massage area 😂 Or little mini guestrooms with a terrace. Would be the greatest dorm situation for young travelers.

Ahhh the pigstyes.. what wonderful simple one roomed glamping modules they would make.. pointed with lime and secure the walls with ceilings of glass..... but; the paperwork, the cost and all the bureaucracy! Herb gardens would be lovely - but you have so much room to do that without taking up a building space? How about a plunge pool with an outdoor kitchen and bedroom open to the stars? Sometimes it's perhaps just best to repair what is there and wait for the day when you can afford to continue.. Thanks for the vlog; it's really interesting 😊

Bon voyage! It is so sad that your parents have gone, but I hope once this craziness is over that they will be back again for an entended stay! They've done a wonderful job and I'm sure you'll miss them terribly. I was thinking the same for the pigstie. A combination garden/patio where you could grow herbs and flowers and keep all your gardening supplies. Perhaps an outdoor kitchen with a stone oven you could cook with using those herbs and, of course, a lovely place to enjoy it all. I think it will come together in your mind soon enough. ♥️

A ruin can make for a very romantic garden! Good idea. I would plant veg and cutflowers and add different climbing rose varieties (that flower at different times). Perhaps also a rock rose (not a rose but beautifull climber). Perhaps also a grapevine over a small pergola for shade. Add a bench or a few chairs and a little table.

Dear Kylie, I love each one of your gorgeous videos. Thank you for all you do and share. Your videos are such a treat for me to watch, and your energy is so beautiful and inspiring. At the end of my full day something inside me said to check if you posted a new video and I was so happy to see that you had, and so I watched even though I was so tired and it was really late. I am so happy you received the package, and that the bracelet fits you! I was so surprised to see you mentioned this on the video... thank you so much Kylie. You are so kind and so sweet. xoxo You brightened my day as I saw you wearing it while walking on your gorgeous land and showing the beautiful projects you are working on, and I was excited to show to my girls! Sending blessings and love to you and your family, Aimee from Ontario, Canada.

Kylie, what you have there is the makings of a beautiful "Secret Garden" type space, where even the inside walls could be a glorious green space with a fountain, seating, etc. My only other idea that would not cost lots of $ but may help you grow your own produce would be to use reclaimed windows in their frames to build a kind of greenhouse roof to rest over the existing walls, held up with planks (so no construction work/permits necessary). Imagine the produce you could grow year round, a romantic green space that gives in abundance!

Perhaps make the "indoor" space the focus? Put a pergola over the indoor space since there's no roof and create a large outdoor kitchen, lounging area, or greenhouse (with polycarb panels on pergola). Like a cloister garden. I agree with the comment about removing the partition walls between the stys. Or, if that's not feasible, you could create the gardens you mentioned or give each a distinct purpose. Maybe a wood-fired hot tub sty? You could even use one for a very simple compostable toilet bathroom? Do you have any plans to raise animals? Instead of pigs you could raise chickens, bees, etc.

Kylie, your intro music brought tears to my eyes. My dad, who passed away 12 years ago last week, used to play this waltz and dance ballet with my girls when they were 4 and six years old. They'd dress up in my mum's nighties and argue who was princess Aurora. Although it is hard when families have to separate for a while, modern technology now makes communication so much easier, and your parents will always be there with you in spirit during your daily trials and tribulations. They too are lovely people, eventuell though I've never met them, and they have an equally lovely daughter. I wish you and Guido all the very best in your endeavours - even when yet another governmental promise hasn't been honoured - as are so many, when it comes to money. Keep your chins up.!

@@KylieFlavell absolutely! Due to the long distance between Germany and NZ/Australia my children didn't get to see their grandparents often but when they did those moments were special beyond compare. We exchanged phone-calls and videos (no Skype back then) and as soon as they arrived everything else was put on hold! My children have very happy memories of their grandparents and that's all that counts.

Gardens on the outside and greenhouses on the inside! That would be perfect. With the Italian heat and cold(ish) winters some sheeting just for the roofs would be enough to give heat yet also protect seedlings. Then plant them out in spring ( or winter vegies like Brassicas ). Make one area into the potting shed. You'd find me there day and night!

It is such a pleasure watching you, Guido, and your parents working together ❤. I remember all of the hard work I did at our home and property when I was young. My parents always were ready to help out. Those are some of my best, cherished memories. Guido and their relationship has definitely blossomed. What about using your area as a gardening cottage with the walled garden around it? It would make a beautiful studio for your artistic pursuits, also. Loved this vlog!

try to use the stones for a little hidden fountain and use the space as a little hidden romantic corner, with a running water and planted roses... I can imagine sitting there and enjoy chilled wine, watching sunset and listening the water from fountain... or at the morning, with a cup of coffee or tee, take a deep breath and take a energy from the sun

I love the pigsties. They are beautiful and celebrate the memory of times past and the people who tended them. They would be beautiful decorated with a gravel floor, statues, water features, and garden of both flowers and herbs. A perfect place to sit and watch the sunset and sunrise. Use the old stones to build an outdoor firepit with seating around it and some beautiful handmade plaques honoring your families and their heritage. I'm so sorry your parents have left and for your sadness in missing them. I just returned from Ireland a week ago leaving my daughter, son-in-law and new grandson. My heart is hurting and longing to be with them. We are both blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives. Thank you for sharing your life with us and for letting us escape our troubles even if for a moment to a place of such beauty. 🥰

When it is chilly and windy, feeling the warmth of the sun in your videos is just wonderful as is the warmth displayed by you, Guido and your parents. I am going to miss seeing them in your videos so you must be very sad that they have left, for now. I love the idea of having some walled gardens in the pigsties and to be able to sit out by them and enjoy the view. Kylie: You work so hard to make everything beautiful and give us such amazing films. I think it is hard when you are doing it by yourself and you are a film maker so it takes up more time than if you just did vlogs on your 'phone as others do (and even then they often have someone helping). I was wondering if you could go down the volunteer route to help free up more of your time? Doesn't have to be all the time, but I am sure you would get plenty of people happy to come and learn from you.

Thank you Ann. I’ve definitely considered an assistant but honestly, I’m a bit of an introvert and we’re quite isolated so we would need someone to practically live with us on the property, which could make it feel a bit invasive. I guess the lovely part about this job at the moment is that I can manage to film discreetly and edit when Guido is asleep and it doesn’t feel like it encroaches on our privacy or intimate moments like breakfast with my parents and Guido. 😊🫖☕️

When l saw the little stone walls dividing each space, l could see each space as a little Bunkie(a little sleeping area only) for family or guests to stay in while visiting. I've seen ruins like that turned into beautiful fragrant garden/retreat area. It would be a lovely spot for afternoon tea or a glass of wine while watching the sunset. Whatever you decide will be lovely. I hope your parents travel safe and return in the not too distant future.

I like the idea of the vegetable and/or herb garden compartments…but in one of them I would put a sauna with a garden shower and on the front uncovered part a little terrace with sunsets to relax….and maybe one day you will have a nice pool on the premises…not a modern bright blue one, but an elongated one to swim laps in a dark petrol blue……(covered with mosaic tiles maybe)?

Vegetable garden thought to grow edible flowers and some rareties of bothanical mediterranean plants!! like PANCS endemic to this region!! This garden can be a laboratory of ingredients for some special menus. Food producing gardens with unusual semi hardy plants like Tomatillos & Cape Gooseburys mixed with lots of flowers for pollinators and predators would be great. To keep the aphids & ants off the vulnerable tips, not to mention your atichokes nearby, use the pig-styes as roosts for quail which are fairly home loving. They will roam and some will revert to wild, but the 'alpha group' will stay put, live nest and eat as though they were always meant to. The wild ones will clear the garden of unwanted insect and slug pests.
