In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we want to give the downstairs of our boat a complete overhaul. We have been living on Nandji for 4 years now and we have steadily been upgrading her as we sail around the world. We have always completed upgrades for her safety and sailing performance but we are finally upgrading for our comfort and appearance! We rip out the old carpet that decorated the walls and replace with some fancy carpentry to match the rest of the boat. We want to give her a fresh new modern look whilst keeping the traditional boat feel and not making it look like an ikea kit!
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

I was a little unsure of the vertical wood at first but I have to say it looks great! Adds depth to the interior! Whit paint on that one bulkhead is going to brighten up the whole saloon. Good choice! I am impressed with your work Yosh and even more impressed with how you involve Bonita along the way! Smart man! Nandji is going to look so good!👍👏😄❤❤❤⛵🌏

Once you have all the vertical areas painted white, you may want to reconsider painting the bulk head. I have updated my v berth and aft cabin with horizontal white tongue and groove and it really lightened up the space. While you have the time, you may want to consider overhead flat profile LED lighting to also brighten the cabin. I completed that this fall and what a difference it made. I am in the process of refinishing some more teak to lighten up the space as the teak had gone dark red with age. This is a very tedious job but it will look great when you are done.

There was one other boat where the owner went with vertical pieces instead of the traditional horizontal. He also used bamboo and I must say that when he was done it looked good. No need to be like everyone else, be unique, its your home after all and a big plus is that it is admiral approved.

Us landlubbers had 30-yr old pine furniture in our house, and we felt they needed brightening up. Like you we sanded off all the varnish from the wood, but used 3 coats of white primer/sealer over the bare wood (stops the yellowing coming thru). Then we top-coated the furniture with white paint -- it looks fantastic!

If you paint the wall white, you should varnish or epoxy it first. This will not let the paint soak into the wood. If you ever wanted to go back to the wood look it will save you hours or days of sanding or stripping the old paint off. I have seen vinyl flooring board used on a bulkhead and it looked great.

This is a little late but I use a construction adhesive called PL Premium for that kind of work. It’s permanent like 5200. They make a fast set version that will adhere in a matter of minutes. And I agree horizontal would have been my preference. And for what it’s worth I live on a Bayfield 32 which is decked out in beautiful teak. While I love wood it is just too dark in the cabin. I’ve often been tempted to bringing out the off white paint to break up the dark wood finishes. I’m looking forward to seeing what your boat will look like. If it’s not too late I’ve been considering covering one of my bulkheads with that white vinyl(?) dry erasable product and laying in a few coloured pens to add an artistic touch. You have a baby on the way and I’m sure the little one would love a fresh palette to colour on. Just sayin.

A tip on painting over beautiful, precious and rare wood is to give it a couple of coats of varnish or clear coat before painting. Should you come to your senses and decide to go back to wood. Only joking about you going back but the next custodian might. I did something similar on my old yacht but did the area around the windows.

Just out of curiosity, did you consider at all maybe just epoxying two stringers to the hull and then fixing the slats to the stringers? That would have also allowed you to use a dedicated insulating material between the hull and the slats. Reason I ask is because I’m wondering that by directly adhering them to the hull, won’t they be difficult to ever remove them? Would it be advantageous to be able to retain direct access to the hull? Doing an interior fresh up on my Islander 36 is one of my winter projects, so I really appreciate learning what other people are doing and why. I’ve already removed the old vinyl headliner and that’s the first thing I need to figure out how I’m going to replace it.
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 4 жыл бұрын
Good question, we did consider but wanted to maximize space, we have limited space as is. Nandji's hull is already thick and being made of wood sandwiched between epoxy, already built well Insulated. When we build stuff on Nandji we make everything a permanent fixture and if we change it in the future, deal with it then. We don't want things to break along the way and install everything as to how we want it for years to come
