Repacking a reserve parachute for paragliding - BANDARRA

Thanks to Bernard, Bill and John for all their help.
Me and Gemma went to the Derbyshire Soaring Club annual repack to inspect and repack our reserve parachutes.
This is something that should be done every year and freeflight clubs in the UK with help from the BHPA make it easier to teach and assist pilots in repacking their own reserve parachutes.
It was a great experience again this year and last minute I thought I'd film it. Sorry for the sound as there's a lot of reverb in a big sports all like that.

This was very helpful. Please make a video about repacking Square Reserve or Cross Canopy. I know they are similar to the round, just the corner are different. Thanka for sharing. Our club does something very similar here in Vancouver, we deply our rezerves while hanging on a simulator after another pilot gives us a real hard spin to simulate a free fall after a massive wing collapse.

WHAT A CHAMPION!! what a great video. I live in RSA and there are very few such resources available for us here. I went t check my reserve and found that the clamp was too tight.... it would have never opened!!!!!! Andre , your vids are really great! As a beginner I used to watch your vids to understand some basics that i was never informed of. I have have passed on a few of your vids to my paragliding club here in South Africa ( especially your xc vids, with amazing responses). We really appreciate your videos. Good video and very helpful. Thank you. One comment based on other videos that I have watched is to make sure the ‘skirt’ is at the top of the deployment bag not the bottom, as seems to be shown here, for a faster deployment. I’m not clear which is correct but I’ve gone for the faster deployment approach.

I think the issue with webbing to webbing connections is massively overstated.

Preamble: I’m not a parachute packing expert and these are my thoughts. I would STRONGLY advise talking to a parachute packing expert!! My thoughts …… Soft shackles are OK from my understanding but line to webbing and webbing to webbing is not a good idea. Especially line to webbing. From my climbing experience you can easily cut webbing with a line (I would assume it’s worse with a rapid energetic deployment of a parachute line = more heat (and thinner = concentrated heat/cheese wire!). Try a sawing action of a line and some webbing and you’ll see. The heat generated is enough to melt nylon. In climbing the golden rule is “No same hardness material shall touch”. Ie metal to metal, line to line, line to webbing, etc. Knot’s are the only exception but these have to be dressed and the deprecation of loading is understood.

is it imperative to repack on a smooth floor or surface? if repacking at home, would packing on carpet create major issues? I guess smooth floors are preferred to reduce friction on the silky chute material?

Thanks Andre, another good one! In terms of throwing: We learned to throw it full pelt in one motion into the horizon... So grab handle and just rip&throw in one motion as hard as you can... After that you can try and accelerate the deployment even further, by pulling on the connection-bridle! yeah I think it depends on the harness too. if the pins pop off in the same direction as the bag comes out you can and should do that. in our case, you pull the handle up to pop the pins but if you keep pulling up the bag wont come out. also you don't want to throw it up, usually back or side. but yeah, good video and demonstration :) Thanks for sharing

please don't teach a 3-step throw. You do it in one move as powerful as you can. Doing it in steps causes time passing between...and there can happen alot in milliseconds. Starting with building up GForce or the ground coming closer. ;)
