Thank you for this wonderful repair instruction video. I have 30+ years old Philips CD850 MK2 CD player which had exactly the same problem. I was able to get it back up and running by following your video. CD850 is almost identical to this Marantz player. Back in the day, they came from the same assembly line. Assumably the plastic wheel which runs the media tray mechanism is the Achilles heel of the system. It just cracks when it gets old. I ordered the same wheel from Thakker GmbH und Co. KG from Germany via eBay (10,40 EUR, prompt response and delivery). It is unbelievable that you can still buy parts to 30+ old year device! This is good for the planet that we can keep old systems up and running.

Thank you for posting the instructions. Like others, I was on the verge of sending my much-loved Marantz CD-52mkIISE to the bin, having put up with a misbehaving tray for too long. I bought it for around £300 in 1993! Ten minutes with the torxdrivers and your instructions the new wheel and belt went in without a hitch and it's working as good as new. To my delight, it is outperforming the Marantz CD6003 I bought to take over its duties about ten years ago. What a brilliant way to start the weekend - my CD collection awaits! Didn't spot Darren Foulsham's comment about the additional screw under the headphone socket on the CD-52 until after I had done the job. Luckily, no harm done. Phew!

Excelent!!!! I fixed my 1991's Marantz CD40 right now. It took me bring the replacement from Amazon to Uruguay 3 weeks, but the wheel was desintegrating. The rest of the player is working 10 points, even the belts!!! Thanks a lot for having made this tutorial!!! Exelente tutorial, me permitió cambiar el engranaje de mi Marantz CD40 de 1991. Es un equipo excelente calidad que con los años apenas presenta esta falla que puede solucionarse con poco dinero y esfuerzo.

Thank you so much for this video tuition. It was very, very useful, especially when the sliding tray fell apart on removal- watch, pause, watch, pause... and it was back together (... never would have guessed otherwise!). One thing to note on the Marantz CD52 Mk II, at 4:20 as well as the 3 plastic tangs, there is a further small screw to remove from the metal underside panel (below the headphone socket). This was easily the trickiest, most time consuming bit of the job for me. Thanks to the video everything else went smoothly. Now listening to CDs on this lovely unit without the russian roulette’ of whether the disc drawer will open or not!

Thank you so much for this video. I was all set to go to Richer Sounds for a replacement CD player when I thought I'd have a quick look at KZbin to see if others had had the same problem. I have exactly the same unit as you, so ordering and fitting the replacement part was a doddle. As I type this, I am listening (belatedly) to a CD received as a Christmas present.

A top video that explains much. Be careful, the 52 mk2 has 5 lower, plus side lugs. The cd drawer cover seems to need to be remove before extra access/ease of refit, this is done by exposing some of the drawer, (easy if the tops off), pushing the drawer front GENTLE to the left and a light tug forwards. The top rear screw secures the earth strap. Once understood this is an easy job

@@getalookatthis If I remember rightly you have to first get the end of the tray off, the part that says ‘bitstream conversion’ this is held in place by a couple of plastic hooks so push it upwards or sideways. Once that’s off, you can take the fascia off without a problem. That was the trickiest bit of the whole operation. Good luck.

The reason for the extra space inside the unit, is due to the fact that the case, where all the circuits have been placed in, wasn't just ment for a CD player. Philips, which owned Marantz during the time your CD player was made, actually build this Marantz CD Player. This unit is actually Philips CD player with the Marantz branding on it. Now for the extra space, Philips did a lot of "clever" tricks to make the production cost as low as possible on these units, by using the same casing as other products of them. You may have noticed that there are two "holes" on the rear of the CD Player where there normally could fit two aerial connections like with a VCR. The reason for this was that Philips, who manufactured this unit, with the Marantz branding, build these cases to be used with the VCR's, CD-I, CD players, and who knows what else more, to directly fit in them. This helped to lower down the production cost on these units, cause Philips didn't need to made seperate panels. Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying you have a cheap CD player!! This is a really well made unit with really great sound quality, but Philips used to everything back in the day, to make a unit as cheaply as possible to produce, but still keep the level of qualtiy up! I know all this because my grandfather used to work in the Philips plant just 6 miles from where I live in Hasselt Belgium. The chance is high that you have a "made in Belgium" unit as wel. Greetings.

Fantastic demonstration - I'm listening to a bit of Kate Bush's Sensual World in celebration of fixing my CD drawer. My player is slightly different to the Marantz in the video - I had a little screw under the facia, holding a strip of metal on the inside of the facia to the body which had to be unscrewed from the outside before I could get the front off - and the front of the CD drawer had to be slid back on (with the drawer open but switched off)AFTER the drawer had been refitted. ' I am also the proud owner of a very funky little star- shaped screwdriver for my non-allen key screws. THANKS AGAIN for a really good, step-by-step, well explained video.

Hi, had exactly same problem with my CD52. Followed your instructions and was surprised how easy it was to change the wheel and belt. However, the tray now sticks on opening and I have to ease it out by hand. Sometimes the tray is not staying open and closing instantly. After 4 or 5 attempts to rectify I got fed up and bolted everything back together. The tray still needs teasing open. If I press close it sticks but if I hit play it closes. Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thanks. p.s. I did notice that the new belt ( from China ) seems to be thinner than the old belt. UPDATE..... When I ordered the new wheel and belt from China I remembered to order two. Both from different sources. Second set arrived today. The belt was definitely thicker. So, tools out and in around 20 minutes changed belt, left in the new wheel. Bingo, just spent 4 hours blasting out all my old tunes. So, be aware that the belts can be quite different. Thanks again for the video, would never have had the guts to try repair without it. 👍👍

If it worked before, it might be that the laser assembly isn't in the correct position. You could try gently pushing towards the start of its travel, where the center of the disk is. It needs to be there to read the CD and understand there's a disk present.

Thanks for this video, not too easy to find this kind of detail on this models. I have a the same Marrantz. No problem with the draw. Is working perfectly. Just one small issue : a bit of mechanical noise when playing. Not bothering with most of the music but you can hear it when playing classical music for exemple. Any ideas on possibles causes? I was wondering if it is just a matter of putting grease in the plastic wheels holding the CD from the top (sound seems to come from there) or oil into the shaft of the motor. What do you think? Any suggestions on brands of oil and grease should I use? I will be very thankful!!
@dembydish
@dembydish 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Juan, reading you comment it seems to me (as you have deducted) you have a lubrication problem. If you hear the noise as the CD is turning it may be the motor, or any part that is turning with the CD. I'd suggest using a very light oil, like sowing machine oil and apply a drop or two to the shaft of the motor and the CD hold-down. Thank you for your comment and please subscribe if you feel so inclined to thep this channel grow.

idora99 The Marantz CD63 is not listed on the list I show at the end of the video. But this is not a complete list. If you have access to the player, you can remove the lid and look at the transport mechanism. If it looks like the one I show (the CDM-4) then it will fit. There are a few variations of the transport but they are basically designed the same. If it looks like it, then I'd take the risk and buy the part. You could sell it again if it is different, a visual comparison would quickly show if they match up.

Evening Thomas, I'm not familiar with this model, but I doubt any specialist tools are available these days. I'd suggest making an inverted hook(s) out of wire to coax the belt over the wheel, or if it's broken, you most likely will need to remove the media tray. I have the Marantz CD6000. Sadly not on the list. The gear wheel is definitely broken and it isn't this one - this is like a pulley with a groove, mine has teeth around the outside and there's no belt (as far as I can tell). I can't figure out what the replacement part is. Anyone reading this can give me a hint I'd be most obliged.
@dembydish
@dembydish 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Rasheed, the best way to find the part is to identify the type of CD tray your machine is using. The best way to do this is to look on the internet forums etc. using the machine's make and model number. Someone may know what it is, pictures will likely exist too. When you identify the cd tray type, you may be able to find the replacement part. I expect many other CD players use the same tray so the info is out there somewhere. This is how I identified the one in the video. Given the age of the players and the fact they're no longer manufactured some research is necessary. I got my replacement wheel on eBay. I hope this helps and please subscribe . Good luck and thank you for your question.

@@dembydish thank you for replying! Subbed. It used the philips VAM 1201 which is interchangeable with 1202. That's the laser transport - not the disc transport. And this laser transport is indeed used in many, many machines, just like your pulley. I did wonder if indeed my ubiquitous laser and your ubiquitous pulley were related but it doesn't seem so. Have searched extensively. Not actually on a lot of forums though. Guess that's next.

HI Marijan, sorry I took so long to reply. This looks like a date reading problem, the machine usually scans the CD to read data about track numbers and timings and if the CD is playable etc. Since it is a commercially available ABBA CD it should play. It may be a dirty laser eye, this can be caused by dust etc. Suggest you clean it carefully with a cotton swab or compressed air and try again. If not then it is likely an electronic problem. I hope this solves your problem, thank you for your comment and please subscribe to help the channel grow. Good luck.
