You don't need that fancy $70 M10 TZN Stubby set. Turn the steering wheel to gain access to the bracket and caliper bolts. This will give you a full foot in there. For example, when working on the right front brake, turn the wheel to the left to access those bolts without special tools. I used the M10 bit from a $13 cheapo 'CASOMAN 9-Piece Low Profile Impact Triple Square Bit Socket Set' (amazon) and an old chunky husky wrench. Even this low profile kit is not needed, any old M10 laying around will fit. For the 21mm caliper bolt an 18" breaker bar is perfect once the wheel is turned, but a 24" would work too.

Great video. I have a couple of questions. the brake pads looked like they still had lots of life left in them. is there a reason for swapping them out? Second, can you rebuild the ecs 2 piece rotor? i assume it would be cheaper.
@stevenstrackdays268725 күн бұрын
Swapping them out for racing pads. (Turned out that they're not racing capable pads.) I chatted with the ECS Tuning customer service to ask for ring replacement. They didn't sell, but they applied some discount for my second purchase of full rotors.
@stevenstrackdays268725 күн бұрын
Oh, you meant resurfacing. It should be cheaper but I was afraid that the OEM rotors cannot handle heat on track. I replaced OEM rotors with ECS Tuning rotors.

Great video Steven. Do you recommend changing the brake fluid? Also what tires and brake pads would you recommend? Is it a bad idea to upgrade the pads and keep stock rotors ?
@stevenstrackdays26873 жыл бұрын
Brake fluid changing yes. I uploaded a video about brake fluid. I'm still trying different tires and pads to see which won't be melted. Haven't found ideal ones. Stock rotors are ok. The concern is that they may be overheated and then out of the original shape a little. An upgraded rotor with better heat resistant is better, or get two-piece rotors. My drilled and slotted rotors are overkill. They consume pads 2 times faster. They do have great performance, but too expensive. I regret...

Thank you. I’ll take that in consideration

Hi Steven, awesome video. Quick question for you: Is the stubby socket completely necessary? I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase for a convenience issue. Would a regular M10 bit & socket do the job?
@stevenstrackdays26873 жыл бұрын
I tried several socket sets from Amazon but none are low-profile enough. If you find one, please let me know. Audi/VW factory wrench VGA1410 (appeared on the repair manual) should work but I didn't try it.

For others trying this without a short socket, you can turn the wheels for better access with a longer bit. Careful not to cross thread putting them back on

Great informative and detailed video. How do you like the ECS 2 piece crossed grilled rotors? Any squealing or noticeable deminnished brake performance? Is there excessive brake dust with the yellow pads compared to stock? Would you go in another direction if you go do it over? Cheers
@stevenstrackdays26873 жыл бұрын
I use them on race track only. So, squealing is not a concern and reduced performance is normal on track. They produce tons of more dust. Not a good pair with EBC yellowstaff which are street pads. I may pick less aggressive rotors (grilled holes but no lines) in future because it consumes pads too quickly.

Hi , Steven, appreciate your great video to demonstrate how to replace the pad and rotor. I’m looking for a second hand RS brake for my A6, do anything need to consider ? I saw this calliper is not same as traditional Bremble one , this one is one piece manufactured, is this calliper can’t be rebuild if defect?
@stevenstrackdays26873 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin. I'm not sure about A6, and I don't have repair manuals for A6. Here's my video about how to find repair manuals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5eof4urYrCokJY From my experience of A4/A5 series, RS5 has larger rotor size than S5, and S5 has larger rotor size than A5. Wheel size might also be different so that large rotor can fit and won't hit outer rim. I don't know about rebuilding calipers. If I plan to change my calipers, I'll probably use Brembo one instead of Audi RS one for my track days.

Very informative but as a mechanic I know you’re not supposed to hit the surface of the rotor with a hammer to try and loosen it up. That will cause rotor warping, which will result in replacing your rotors or resurfacing them. Instead, loosen them up by hitting the face of the rotor where lug nut pattern is, not the actual rotor surface itself.
