Thanks so much, Emily! Your vid helped me replace the old ghost-flushing (and wrong style) valve on our two part Champion 4 toilet successfully. The replacement valve is working beautifully! Your instructions were so clear and helpful; I appreciated how you showed the tank removal. I didn't have the plastic nut tightening device since our toilet was original to the home and installed who-knows-when, and I haven't found a source for them online yet. I hand-tightened the nuts as best as I could when reattaching the tank. My partner assisted to get the bolts tightened to stop the post-install leaking (STRONK hands!). In case it helps anyone else: when taking apart the toilet, avoid loosening the inner tank bolts. Keep that nice seal with the rubber washers. Or, if you do loosen those inner bolts, tighten the nuts for a secure seal while the tank is disassembled. Re-tightening those nuts directly under the tank is really tricky after the tank is reattached.

Thank you so much for your extremely helpful video. We needed to replace the entire flush valve and your video showed us exactly how to do it, step by step. The official valve replacement kit from American Standard at Lowe's did come with the big plastic wrench tool but did not come with the skinny long plastic tool to get the nuts off so we could remove the tank. Ended up ordering a kit from Amazon that did include that tool which I believe is absolutely necessary to remove the tank. So all in all it cost about $40 for us to do it ourselves; much cheaper than a plumber probably would have cost. Put it all back together and it works beautifully. Thanks so much again! And awesome sweatshirt by the way!

Emily, You did a great job explaining how to install that Flush Valve. I have looked at 7 other videos and that includes one produced by American Standard. They completely left out how to get the tank off the bowl. I have worked in radio and TV, and actually taught advanced video editing at Vincennes University. I really liked how you gave the reasons for your cut-aways and the one about finding another extension cord which gave your videographer better close up shots of what you were talking about made me LOL. Anyway, I was able to replace everything on my tank, and it works. (Miracles of Miracles) from watching your video. If I ever run into anyone who wants to tackle flush valve problems with Champion, I will recommend your video highly. By the way, you would have gotten an A+ for that video in my class.

Thank you Emily for sharing this with us. If you are going commit to dismantling the tank from the toilet, why not replace the flush valve with one that lasts longer and improves the toilet performance. Nuflush makes one--solved all our problems. @4:30 the tool for holding the nut on the bottom of the tank is plastic. It will only work if the nut/bolt has not corroded together. My plastic one just stripped itself trying to hold the nut. I used a deep socket on my toilet to get it done.

If you don't have the special tools, you can use visegrips locked on the nut for the bottom nuts on each side and rotate around. For the large plastic white flashing nut mated to the toilet, use a large adjustable channel lock that matches.

I have the same toilet that I installed only 1 week ago. I am not happy with the high flush valve because half the time the flush is too short to do a complete flush. If I replaced the flush valve I would put a shorter one in so it would use more water and flush it the first time. How am I saving water if I have to flush it twice?

You mentioned something very important that is those shut off valves WILL LEAK if they have not been opened or close in a long while. That is another nightmare if that happens best to turn the water off from the house. In my case the thumb screw sheared off....from just flushing the toilet??? I bought a new flush valve assembly as plan B ....but I am attempting to remove the old thumb screw base as opposed to replacing the assembly...another problem they do not make the thumb screw any more...had to buy off ebay for 25 bucks for a plastic screw?

I am replacing my Chamption 4 flush valve right now and I came here to see if I could answer a question. If you notice at 5:18 there is a curious crescent shaped separation in the toile flush hole. My initial thought is that this is to provide water for the bowl rinse portion of the flush (my toilet provides hardly any water to rinse the sides of the bow). The fill valve itself has an identical crescent shaped partition where the large fill tube is located. My thought was that perhaps these should line up, but that wasn't the way the factory had installed it. However, its impossible to line these up because the fill tube won't allow for this alignment. In any event, you re-installed in the video the same way mine came from the factory, so that is what I will do.

How did it turn out with the replacement? I have put this in a ton of rentals and never had any instructions specifically meting that divider (I went and looked and see what you are talking about). However, I have only ever spent special attention to lining up that gasket so the corners and flat sections are aligned between the bowl and the tank - and I've always been fine :) Hope it works out for you!!!
@philsey6913 Жыл бұрын
@@YouCanDIYHome It went just fine. If there is a next time I'm going to order a new gasket kit for the tank and toilet, the greenish one. Mine was a little worn, but it should be fine. It hasn't leaked yet. But then again its only been a few hours. I think the shapes of those crescent dividers are just coincidence. I'll be redoing our downstairs powder room in a couple months, and to be honest, I'm going to give Toto a try as a replacement to the old builder's grade toilet.

How did you know to replace the entire flush assembly versus only replacing the flapper and amall O ring washer at the top of the unit where the chain connects to the flush handle? I'm asking because our Champion loses water from inside the tank. If the entire flush system needs to be replaced, wouldn't most of the water empty from the tank? Whereas if it's just the flapper that needs to be replaced, then if water stops leaking once the water level drops below the flapper and the tank no longer loses water. Would that indicate that it's the flapper that needs to be replaced?
@lelandlucia72314 ай бұрын
The stem in the flush valve was broken which caused the valve assembly to not work correctly so she needed to replace the whole valve since they don't make a separate user replaceable part for that (2:43). If the water stops leaking below the flapper level than it's the flapper or or the flapper seal. American Standard models using this valve are known to have issues with the flapper seals. Many develop bubbles under the seal and leak. You can just replace the seal if you have the model you describe and not have to replace the flapper. Korky makes one (no. 450) that works with this model and is warranted for 10 years (although I doubt the valve would last that long). The package also includes the O ring. It's about $10. Take care if you're taking the top nut off as you can break the stem under it pretty easily and it will drop down into the toilet horn.

Having created a great tutorial on the valve replacement, you or someone may have a suggestion for me about something that happened when I wanted to just replace the gasket and subsequently the entire valve. When I opened the top of the valve by removing the plastic nut on top of the gasket assembly, I heard the rod that goes through the valve assembly drop inside the toilet. Someone had tampered with it before and the rod simply dropped down. I could not see it even after removing the tank, and could not fish it out. Worried I have to get the d@#% thing out somehow. And how? Thoughts only, I did enough praying and swearing. Will I need to actually shake the toilet upside down?
@YouCanDIYHome Жыл бұрын
Is your toilet attached to floor currently? Or completely removed? you don't want to risk losing it all the way down your sewer drain if its connected to the floor. Toilets have their P trap built in (versus a sink or tub that have a p trap plumbed in below the floor) so it may possibly be in the toilets P trap. If its in there and dry, shaking it upside down may get it out? Also, maybe a shop vac? then you could take it out of the vacuum body? Let me know how it goes!!

American standard is an unethical company. My flush mechanism also failed. It turned out to be the flush mechanism flapper seal. It is not fit for its particular purpose. After about a year my brand new AS tiolet's seal was full of these bubbles.
