Another great video. Performance increase with an SSD really depends on the game being played. Overall an SSD will improve loading time performance on average of 15 - 45 seconds, but bandwidth through the southbridge chip of the Xbox S is limited, so do not expect lighting fast improvements on all games as you would see on a PC for example. The bottle neck is the southbridge, not the SATA header. For reliability it is a no brainier to install an SSD.
@tmcclelland474 жыл бұрын
I can only imagine how epic it would be in the Xbone VCR, because from experience they seem to be quite noticeably slower than the S.

Is the south bridge where the sata controller is? A ssd should also kill a hdd in iops as well. Running your os plus games from an ssd should net noticeable gains otherwise you could just use an external ssd.
@ConsoleTherapy4 жыл бұрын
@@saysbadman The southbridge is a support processor for the APU, basically it handles input and outputs to/from other components on the board (HDMI, WiFI, HDD etc). So even though the SATA and APU can handle higher bandwidth, the southbridge throttles throughput for certain I/Os to allow it to handle the multiple requests without crashing/overheating etc etc

Raw sequential bandwith isn't the problem with HDDs in the 8th console generation. The problem is in HDD's IOPS, seek time and the multiple small files that multiply the seek time. I was thinking for a long time now to change my HDD to SSD on my One S, made the change on my PS3 and PS4 many years ago cause they were extremely easier and didn't involve opening the device completely (i am extremely clumsy and useless when it comes to these delicate actions and i would never wanna damage my devices). Good to see that both the PS4 & XB1 can be easily fixed/upgraded with a new HDD or SSD. I believe the 360 required a weird workaround, if you wanted a drive larger than their proprietary addon drives, it requiring copying of specific data from existing drive. So I never bothered trying to upgrade my 360 HDD, whereas I swapped my 80GB PS3 drive for a 320GB HDD. I did end up with a 320GB 360 drive though, as I got the Halo 4 360 in a trade in deal, that was weirdly generous for a GAME deal. Trading a 250GB slim with 1 controller + £100, it got you; the custom clear shell console, 2x custom controllers, 320GB HDD, Halo 4 on disc & fresh warranty.
@Knaeckebrotsaege Жыл бұрын
Stock 360 consoles used whitelisted drives to prevent cheap 3rd party upgrades, but they're still standard 2.5" HDDs in more (phat 360) or less (slim 360) weird enclosures. Fairly easy to circumvent by getting a WD HDD up to 500GB and using "hddhackr 1.40" on your PC to make said WD HDD pretend being one of those whitelisted official drives which the console will then accept. Unfortunately 500GB is the upper limit because no official drive larger than that was ever released that the software could make the new drive pretend to be

For everyone: Quick tip for hdds not ssds. If they stop being recognised, it can sometimes mean dirty contacts or slight discolouring of contacts between the boards and the hdd itself. Where contacts from the drive itself touch the board, use an eraser to go over the discoloured contacts. I had this recently and have had this a couple of times now. Just go over with a soft eraser till they are clean and then you just put it back together and you should be fine. You could use IPA but if you do not have one, and eraser will do so long as it is a soft one and will crumble a bit easier, you do not want too hard in case you damage the contacts. This does mean taking the hdd board off the hdd and cleaning but this does NOT mean the sata power or data contacts. The other contacts between the board and the hdd which is why I say, taking the board off the hdd. This may not be as well known. Provided there is no other issue like clicking and just that it is not being detected, your drive may actually be fine, just clean the contacts on the board to the drive itself which as contacts that are slightly springy, just becareful not to damage anything.

I think if you go with a drive less than 500GB or more than 2TB (Xbox compatible sizes) then you would have to make some changes not seen here because you need to trick the Xbox into thinking there's a compatible drive there but I wouldn't advise going above 2TB because there can be issues later down the line and less than 500GB is just pointless as there are predefined sizes for each partition so the last time I messed about with a 250GB for an Xbox the actual space for storage turned out to be in the region of 130GB but this was only as a project before I put a 4TB in there

So found your video to be helpful! But through my experience I learned that if a console is part of the "Xbox Preview Program," then none of this, including the OSU1 offline update will work, even with a new hard drive. I thought my Xbox One X had a bad hard drive since a recent update got caught in a fail/restart cycle. Replaced the hard drive with a new one, but same issue continued to happen and offline update would always instantly fail. Decided to test the old hard drive with SeaTools and both short and long generic tests passed on the old HHD. So started looking at other issues. Finally was able to determine that the offline update and/or scripts for a new hard drive will not work for a console on the Xbox Preview Program. To do so, the console must be removed (unenrolled) from the preview program and then offline update or even an online update will work. At least that is what worked for me.
@cezardob Жыл бұрын
How does one unenroll from the preview program if the drive is dead? If there's no network (dead drive and no operating system), then there's no way for the Xbox to communicate (or vice versa) with MS servers...?
@K-tf9vt Жыл бұрын
@@cezardob You can unenroll from the preview program when logged in on any Xbox. My brother logged into my account on his Xbox, unenrolled my account and console from the preview program. I thought and all errors indicated the drive was bad, but ended up finding out that wasn't the case. It was the Preview Program update that was bad, my drive was perfectly fine. Mentioning your costs and pricing was quite surprising. Well done, with a little insight on how to break down an xbox one s. I've I just replaced my 2005 xbox 360 laser and let me tell you; quite a bit to consider, especially when you cant just replace drives without reformatting the motherboards. Great video.

Yea I'm trying to talk more about pricing in order to open up conversation about that. Every now and then some one says I'm a rip-off merchant, but that's often because they haven't considered the costs involved or the fact that yes, I'm in business to make money. So I set my prices, and I try to be transparent about them, and people can make their choice as to where they'd get their stuff fixed. If they've found some kid working from his bedroom who will change their xbox drive for £20 labour, because he doesn't have rent to pay, then good for them, I've got no hard feelings toward that. However, the kid in his bedroom isn't insured, and likely his warranty is worthless. Make your choice.

@@Adamant_IT Transparency will usually give the customer an inherit trust to pay whatever your fee is, within reason- Knowing their money is being used towards an honest service. I was under the impression that xbox one internal harddrives were set in stone perhaps some misinformation some time back. I just purchased an external harddrive last night actually with the information you've provided. A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment is the best for removing dust from computers. I've never understood why everyone else seems to use compressed air. That just blows the dust around and potentially pushes it further into places it shouldn't be.
@Stance19882 жыл бұрын
No it doesnt, you use a compressor if it's done properly. Canned air is a joke and expensive. Take the PC outside, hold the fans with your fingers and blow it with an actual air compressor, it will be spotless. Can wipe parts off with a microfiber cloth after and it looks brand new.

@@oneamazingkaboomer yea but you still want to use one with a dram cache in it. If you go to cheap and get one without a dram. It might effect installing big games. It would be actually an interesting test.
@zethir91944 жыл бұрын
@mister.T Jr no no, Dramcache in an SSD makes it much faster. This is something that alot of cheaper SSD's dont have. very shortly how it works is that it saves some data that may accure later on in the cache so it responds much faster. SSD's without this can be times and times slower than the SSD with it. They can be fine without it for light loads but they (in many cases) even gets slower than a normal HDD

It is a Seagate. I have heard that the 2.5 inch Seagate drives have a high failure rate, especially when they are part of an external hard drive. When they fail the data is impossible to fully recover because the damage is usually a head crash. That one may be having a different failure but none the less I would not even use that one as my backup drive, it can completely die any time in its current state (get much worse).
@Knaeckebrotsaege Жыл бұрын
Seagate "Rosewood" series of 2.5" drives. 100% failure rate, with some not even making it to the 3 month mark. Makes Toshiba 2.5" HDDs look like premium grade in comparison lol. The only people that love those junk seagate drives are in the data recovery business cause it brings them $$$

I'm a fairly new subscriber (last few months) so you may have answered these in previous videos ... apologies if this is the case. 1. How did you get into repairing PCs and do you have any formal training or are you completely self taught? 2. What happens when you break something during a repair? Do you always foot the bill or are there some situations where the customer has to wear it? You must get some pretty janky computers come through your doors that either have garbage components and/or have been poorly looked after and are therefore a repair nightmare.
