In this Old Byrd Farm video, we're diving into another important restoration project on my 140-year-old farmhouse. Today, I'm replacing broken window panes, starting with carefully removing the remaining broken glass. Once the surface is cleaned and prepped, I install the new glass panes and glaze them into place, ensuring they're secure and looking good as new.
As I work, I take a moment to reflect on the importance of spreading kindness and how sharing our knowledge can help preserve history. Donna here, those people that leave insulting comments are what we used to call "telephone tough guys". They will be ugly on the phone but if they deal with you face to face, they won't have the spine to make the same comment to your face. Those type of people have to put others down to bring themselves up. Best not to acknowledge them. Keep doing whatever you feel like doing on YOUR channel, and we'll keep watching.

Robert, I watch many different YT channels of all sorts. A lot of the people who make videos complain about bad comments. It seems like today it’s the thing to do. Personally, if I don’t like a video, I just turn it off and move on without commenting. Keep up the good work on your restoration and the other topics you cover.

This was a great conversational video and I want to say I am truly sorry with my remark of the cars sitting and rotting..I am 70 yrs old and I have taught my kids if you dont have anything nice to say to keep your mouth shut...and Robert please accept my apology..I truly love your vids..btw, great work on the windows :) Big hugs!!!!!

Last Saturday my wife and I went to the Pokeweed creek restaurant. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic. The rest of our lunch was equally as good. And we got excellent service. Thanks for the recommendation.

I love both your channels. They are so informative and so calming. You are so right to say to educate instead of putting people down. If there is a young person just trying to ask questions they shouldn’t be talked down to. We should be happy we have someone from a new generation wanting to learn or even be interested. Sorry to hear that some folks got their panties in a wad over the video of the old cars. (Can I say panties on the Tube of U?) I thoroughly enjoyed that video and I know a lot of nothing about cars. I appreciate the quality and style that went into most things made "back in the day". And I got a kick out of the banter between you and Joy. Made me chuckle quite a few times. People who are insecure often put others down in an effort to feel better about themselves. Sounds like you took the high road...so to speak.

Love the addition to the story about the old book, very interesting! I’m a Southern lady born, raised and have lived in NC my whole life. I was also taught if you can’t say anything kind just don’t say anything and taught this to my children. If everyone lived by this motto the world would be in a better place than it is today for us all.

I'm 72 and have loved cars since I was 12! My family has had a lot of neat old cars! And, as a woman, a lot of people always assumed I knew nothing about cars. Lol!

Many people are incredibly unkind and outright rude. We should know better. Particularly those of us who are older. I don't know beans about cars but love history and old homes. You're right, our knowledge and interests should be shared with respect and patience. Otherwise, it dies with us.

Robert dont let the downers get you down. Im in my 70's and l like the work you are doing. I didnt read all the comments, but heres a wee tip for using that nasty foam stuff. If you run a strip of tape in the wondow track, you cam get that stuff out when the time comes. Thank you for all the videos of the old place.

I feel your frustration Robert, am a sad owner of my late husbands 54 Merc PU, I put it into our local car show and was shunned from the members of the club since I wasn't the one who did all the work, but was too proud to say, I helped him work on it....that was in 09 and now it sits in pieces in a garage 5 hrs. way...will never see it together since I am now in my 70's...my son will take it off my friends hand and mine...so don't take it to heart about the old farts who look down their noses at those who enjoy the era's of vehicles out there....even in Canada they can be insensitive. I enjoy all your videos....

Love your videos Robert. All I can say is if you are a keyboard critic then get off your couch, go to Georgia and help Robert with some free labor instead of being a critic. As far as the vehicles you nailed it on people and their attitude. We should in courage the next generations to ask questions and develop an interest in the older vehicles to preserve the history. You have always been one of the first ones to say that you just don’t know on some things and leave comments on what people know or think. I admire what you do so don’t get discouraged over ugly comments. Maybe some have had strokes and lost their filter and now say ugly things. My mother became that way after her stroke. She made comments that would have gotten me boxed in my younger days but she would justify being ugly by saying she was just old now and earned the right to say what she wanted. Well I’m now 67 and still believe there is no excuse for being ugly. We need to build other people up and encourage the younger generations curiosity. It gives us a chance to share knowledge and even learn something new sometimes too. Keep doing what you do. It’s fun to watch your channel.

Robert, sorry to hear that you had some lousy comments, some people just like to talk crap and insult and put down, likely there hard hearted, or leave living a lousy life , so take it out on the people living a life , doing something positive, were all human, treat others as you would hope to be treated in return, that's my way, I wear my heart on my sleeve most my younger days and it can be hard, I haven't forgotten, I turned 59 years today 14th , and I absolutely loved the car video, it's one of my favourites, do love all you Robert 🙏

I feel ya, been a car guy my whole life, close to retirement now. I have a small collection of cars, we drag race a few of them etc. I do not like going to shows they are the worst. Your car is never good enough etc. Always running down what you built comparing it to someone else’s car. Those that get ugly don’t have a car and couldn’t build one. Remember a bad comment on your channel is still good for your channel. Love what you’re doing, thanks for sharing.

Remember the old advice,"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Politeness and manners don't cost anything, and make life so much more pleasant. Rudeness and mean comments are not called for, and turn off people. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and we had some of those vehicles and I couldn't remember the years either. Thank you for your channels. I have learned so much history from your videos, and actually found ancestors in Harris County.

I really believe that you and i are kindred spirits as i love history, old cemeteries, and old, forgotten homeplaces just like you. I used to glaze windows in high school as part of my job. I can confirm that you should bed your windows in glazing compound before putting the pane in place. Also I know why some of your windows only have points on the bottom. It’s because some people were lazy 140 years ago the same as they are today. Keep up the good work.

Good job on the window panes. I’ve always hated replacing them. Robert On my channel I film a lot of trains. I love trains but I am not an expert. I’ve have been insulted more than once. So I block them and move on. I don’t understand why people are so rude, but I guess they’re just jealous that you are just a good guy. Thanks for sharing.

Robert I am 70 years old so that’s why I remember the little spike things that went in the window and I grew up in a old house that had the big glass windows in them and we had wooden floors in our house and some of the floors were covered in linoleum and our house had high ceilings and we had space heaters in the house and it was a two story house and we had the old bathtub in our bathroom and if I had to guess the house was probably built in the 40’s

I appreciate watching you glaze your windows because I have an old house. It was built in 1918 and I have a old door that’s got glass that needs to be reglazed. It is a door with the window so I appreciate watching you because I have no idea what I’m doing.

what those “experts’ should be doing is stating what are the subtle differences between the car years. everyone has their specialties with cars, or any hobbies, you own the byrd farm, you can do the windows any way you want. I did glazing in an apartment complex for one of the summers I worked there during the time in college. they were metal frame, so you had to sandwich with the glaze otherwise the glass would brake. along with painting right away! so the glaze does not dry out.such a nice chat, and video!

As someone who has spent decades professionally restoring antique winds I have some tips you may find helpful. 1. After removing old glazing prime the rabbit with a good quality primer. 2. Before installing Glas use a very thin bead of glazing under the glass. 3.press glass into glazing bed and install your pushpoints. 4. Glaze and let dry a minimum of 2 weeks before painting.

It was fun hanging out with you again! I love when you do these videos. Your comments are fun and I love your sense of humor!😁 I like the folding doors. Y'know what, Brian and Stacy hung doors like that up in their new house - he recently put a video out. Great taste runs in the family. You're going to find critics in all genres, unfortunately. KZbin isn't the place for it because videos are put out for entertainment. Watch it or move on. Don't agree? Like you said, then educate. It's not that hard to figure out. Like you said, rude comments will turn the younger generation off from wanting to explore and learn more. They get discouraged. Plus, they get a bad vibe about the people they ought to want to learn from, which is not cool. Loving watching the renovations on the OBF. Shows you do the majority or all of the work yourself. I don't believe there are coincidences, I think happens because it's supposed to happen, not that we understand why! Just like the house I live in now, I am in a house in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, I know this house was built before statehood, 1906, I found two photos of this house, from the 30's , with my Great Great Grandmother and one of her sons standing in front of it! Something I was not aware of before, she passed away in 1963!

I just love that old wavy glass! I owned a house built in 1912 and would enjoy looking out through those old windows. After having the old wood siding scraped and painted before selling the new owners tore out those old beauties and had some awful vinyl windows put in and covered the siding with vinyl. Just don’t understand covering up an historic structure with plastic!

Pah! Come on Robert… misery loves company! People teeing off on you are people that almost certainly don’t have a lot going for them. Being a little harsh to make a point. You are absolutely correct. The real valuable contribution of any enthusiast is the ability to pass on the knowledge they have for the benefit of those who do not know pertinent points about any topic.

Robert, your doing a great job glazing those windows. I wanted to let you know my dad had a ford fairlane before he went in the service in the 1960’s that looked like the one you showed on Sidestep Adventures. Thanks for showing a beautiful car!

You just needed new glaze-back to being an expert at installing those windows! They look good and are sealing in the air conditioning, which was your goal. I loved the car video. I know nothing about cars, but I would have had a great time! It appears to be acceptable now to tear others down. Encouraging others seems to be rare anymore. That’s one of the reasons I watch and support OBF and AIH-I find comfort knowing that there are still good, kind people in this world like you, Dan, Cecil, Scott, Brent, The Other Robert, and your other helpers. Btw, that was good thinking with the tractor bucket. Work smarter, not harder, my Granddad always said!

You're doing a great job, Robert. I don't know anything about glazing, but it looks good to me. Plus I like hanging out with you on both channels. I figure I'm learning things. Forget about those people who think they're superior. I didn't know much about those cars, except the Impalas, but I knew which ones I liked the looks of without knowing much about them. The only one that surprised me was the car that Joy seemed to like. I've never seen anything like that one before. Keep doing what you doing, Robert. I agree with you that it doesn't hurt to be kind.

Hi Robert, I love seeing you working on the farm. My comment is a little out of step with what you are doing today however, I've wanted to say for some time now. First, When you do your striping a good product to use is coppers striper. There's a program I watch called The 2nd Empire Strike Back. He's restoring his Victorian home, & pretty much doing Everything himself. If you'd like some really great tips, this is a very good source for just about anything you could imagine. I just thought you'd like to check It out. The young guy & his wife are doing a lot for the 1st. time. plastering tearing down walls that water damaged. rebuilding windows, Electrical, tiling, You Name It! I believe the home was built in the late 1800's. He wants to restore It to what It was. Anyhow, this is my comment for today, see you on your next video. Always take care & stay healthy, Bonnie M. 👋😄

Good for you Robert! I'm glad you said something about those snarky comments the other night. I didn't realize who they (the people) were but they were very condescending and arrogant in what they were saying. Like you said if you were young and if someone treated you like that, you'd remember it and say to yourself I don't want anything to do with that crowd. They say something like you can get 16 compliments and 1 put down and you will forget the compliments but remember the 1 put down. I don't care who you are, you should never make anyone feel dumb for asking an honest question. You aren't Chris Foos (but he strikes me as a really nice guy). You're just a guy that enjoys old cars, some more than others. The only cars that I'm pretty sure that I know the years of are the '55, '56 & '57 Chevys, but I couldn't tell you the exact model names. And I think the only year they made the split back window in the Corvette was '63, but other than that... Does that make me bad? To me, no. If it does to others, thats a pretty bad thing to base a person's worth on! Anyway, Robert, I'm glad you addressed the issue on this video, but I doubt the offenders would be watching it. After all, it's just an old farm with a guy that isn't bent on making a mansion out of this humble farm house, which I love! - Marcia

I love watching you do stuff I remember from my youth. I grew up in a late 1940's house with a multiplaned, gorgeous window that I loved. I watched my dad replace one of the panes using points, which I thought were so cool. There's a lot of holding power in those tiny triangles. My whole neighborhood is gone now, taken by LAX and turned into a golf course. I wonder if a metal detector could find one of those points.

hiya Robert, you learn by doing and sometimes you have to make mistakes and learn for yourself. i cant understand why people are always having a go at you for doing things your own way. i'm almost certain they didn't have someone going at them...how they were doing things wrong. keep doing it your way...love watching OBF transform. i'm looking forward to the hall floor

If it's cracked and you can't get around to the fix, apply some heavy-duty clear packing tape to stabilize it. Use masking tape on the broken piece that you want to break out to make it easier. White silicone caulk is a great stabilizer for loose panes. It maintains its flexibility for a long time which allows the panes to move a little bit.

8 points, Rob, 2 on each side, for a pane that size, but that's what I learned the last window i had to glaze. Those windows will leak if they are not caulked well. Actually, cutting glass is very simple and would save you money!! 😊 (how will you handle the top?)😂 and it's a sign of these times that people often do not feel they need to be polite to other people. I HOPE Southerners retain their polite stance with other people. You're doing a good job and have picked up a lot of skills, so be pleased in the knowledge that, "...there are many paths to a destination." Yay thank God this is about reglazing and not about replacing with cheap ugly vinyl windows. I love old windows, they are truly the eyes of the home and really add character. I have used the caulk version and personally thought it was hard to work with and quite messy. For what I used it for it functions fine and looks good enough. But I think any future windows I reglaze I’ll stick with the putty

Appreciate hearing your thoughts in more detail on "knowledge as preservation" and the value of kindness in that regard - in any regard really. Reminds me of that Maya Angelou quote, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." We talk about legacy a lot with history but kindness can be a legacy too. I've been thinking about it so much in the last few years - "small acts of kindness" - doesn't seem too important or like that big a deal but sometimes it is moving to people specifically because it is so small. So simple. Yet so awe inspiring and humble. Toni Morrison has this quote that I've come across in the last 6 months or so and I've been thinking about it ever since I first saw it. It's worth looking it up and listening to it in her voice, but it's a similar concept and it's this: "Good is just more interesting, more complex, more demanding. Evil is just silly. It may be horrible but at the same time it’s not a compelling idea. It’s predictable. It needs a tuxedo. It needs a headline. It needs blood. It needs fingernails. It needs all that costume in order to get anybody's attention. But the opposite - which is survival, blossoming, endurance - those things are just more compelling intellectually… It’s a more fascinating job. We are already born. We ARE going to die. So you have to do something interesting that you respect in between." Certainly it applies to all kinds of things but I, I think, in this instance, it's the same sentiment you were talking about in asking "why be ugly, when you can educate?" In the case of the car community's toxicity - that's not a legacy to be proud of and it's certainly not compelling. You are right that they, as a group, will leave the younger generation with lasting first impressions of how it badly it made them feel to be ridiculed or judged for their lack of knowledge. Its consequence will potentially be the death of the very thing that community came together to share and to love. Anyway, I thought I was going to learn a little something about how to fix the broken windowpanes at my grandmother's house (and I did - I think I could actually do this!) but I ended up coming away from this video thinking about so much more. Was not expecting that!
